Horrible!!! Horrible!!! Horrible!!! This makes me sick. How lucky can the colts get. If only Jamarcus Russell was coming out this year and Andrew Luck was the guy in 2008, we'd be awesome right now. We could've kept all those draft picks and used them to help our other needs. This was a setback that ruined not only the raiders, but it ruined it for the other guys coming out of college.

J-bust..........worse thing is he set the raiders back 3 years...but in all reality the draft more or less dictates what you take. QB is the most often selected position with the #1 pick. Raiders needed a qb, and the only time the raiders ever had a #1 pick.

In all reality in the history of the draft, the 2007 QB class was probably the worse ever.....They all sucked, and with respect to cardinals fans the jury is still out on Kolb, but there was a reason why the card's went after peyton. I mean fact was nobody in the huddle could even understand what J-Bust was saying with his louisana draw.

The best think is you will no longer have guys celebrating on purple drank that the won the 68 million dollar lotto. Rookies now have to earn their worth.

“JaMarcus Russell’s gonna immediately energize that Raider Nation, that fanbase, that football team — on the practice field, in that locker room — three years from now you could be looking at a guy that’s certainly one of the elite top-five quarterbacks in this league…you’re talking about a 2-3 year period once he’s under center. Look out because skill level that he has is certainly John Elway-like.”

Good reason why I don't take Kiper too seriously. He gets way too enamored with workout numbers and not what he sees on the field.

It's sad that very few seem to even pick up on the fact that Long wasn't drafted in 2007, & Russell was. Florio didn't spell it out clearly, but he did point out that something was wrong with portraying Jake Long as the first overall pick in 2007. Skipping Russell for legal reasons or shame is one thing, but marking Long's picture with the wrong year is just stupid.

The coaching change was the end for Jamarcus. Changing coaches and the death of his uncle was too much. He was showing signs in the last game of 08 vs Tampay. Derrick Brooks’ last game. We had no QB to get the ball to Calvin Johnson. He was the right pick that didn’t work. I think he was more to blame than the Raiders, but we didn’t help him changing coaches.

Disagree, you could have had Jeff Garcia throwing to Megatron. Garcia would have been a stop gap,but the position could have been filled later.

Saints fan and LSU watcher here. Once again, when it was announced Russell was the overall #1 pick,a collective WTF!! ran through Tiger Nation. We knew Russell would never be a great Qb. He parlayed a Sugar Bowl game with 2 future NFL Wr's in Dwayne Bowe and Brandon Lafell against a over matched Notre Dame team.

Whoa now fellas, let's not paint Russell as a "victim" here.

He happily pocketed $30+ million that he never earned, or even tried to earn. If his feelings are "hurt" or if he feels "dissed", who freakin' cares?

If anything, the Raiders should still feel "hurt" AND "dissed" b/c he hoodwinked them out of $30+ million.

This is what happens when you take a severely overhyped QB who wasn't even all that good in college.

Add in the fact that he's black and it's a done deal b/c the media refuses to criticize, and refuses to allow accurate criticism of a black QB by fans/radio listeners, etc.

NFL teams should always go with a QB who started 3+ years like Donovan McNabb, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, etc. The one year wonder-type QBs rarely, if ever work out in the long run (see Smith, Akili and Leaf, Ryan).

mullman7675 says:

Drafting Russell was the result of the misfortune of having the #1 overall pick in 2007. The experts were wetting their pants just thinking about his potential. Any other team with the #1 overall pick that year would have done the same thing, and if you don’t think so then you have not been paying attention.

I would have taken Calvin Johnson or Joe Thomas #1 in the draft. I knew Russell would bust, but not as badly as he did.

I can't help but wonder if Russell would have turned out better had he started out as a backup and gone to a team that actually had something going for them in the first place. I don't dislike the Raiders, just being realistic, at the time, they really didn't have much of an offense for any QB to come into.
