The speculation about tackle Chad Clifton’s future with the Packers can come to an end.

The Packers will release Clifton on Monday, according to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN. Clifton, who had back surgery this offseason after playing just six games in 2011, failed a physical and, per Schefter, is uncertain that he will ever play again.

Coach Mike McCarthy has said several times this offseason that Clifton remained in the team’s plans, but that was obviously contingent on his ability to get on the field for the team. Clifton was set to make $5.75 million this season, money that the Packers can now use to bolster the roster.

As of now, Marshall Newhouse would seem to be the first option to replace Clifton at left tackle. He started 13 games last season in place of both Clifton and right tackle Bryan Bulaga. Derek Sherrod is also a possibility, although he played just five games as a rookie.

Clifton started 160 games for the Packers after they made him a second round pick in 2000. He made two Pro Bowls and was a key part of the Super Bowl XLV winners.
