Vikings stadium bill clears another Senate hurdle

Vikings-Fans Getty Images

The Vikings stadium bill came back to life on Friday, and it continues to have a pulse on Monday.

Vikings director of corporate communications Jeff Anderson says, via Twitter, that the bill has been approved by the Senate Rules Committee.  Next, it will move to the Senate Jobs and Economic Growth Committee.

The House version of the bill currently is being considered by the Ways and Means Committee.

On Monday’s PFT Live, I talked for a few minutes about the status of the bill and what it will take to move the situation to a resolution.

That’s good to see. Not going to hold my breath though, it’s been a rollercoaster ride so far.

And just a side note, everytime you run that picture it makes me laugh. You got super fan up front, then the only 2 other faces… one couldn’t give a crap, while the other looks like she’s sleeping.

It’s going to pass every other committee and then end up back at the House again. Hopefully the combination of the approval EVERY other committee, the Mayor, the Governor, and the visit from Goodell will sway their second vote.

just for the record, the guy in that picture they always show is Syd Davy… he’s from Canada, and over the past 26 years, he has spent over $300,000 on that seat that you see him cheering from every home game. Thats why they show him all the time.

  18. evangelcomes says: Apr 23, 2012 9:16 PM

The Metropolitan Sports Commission is a slumlord; the Metrodome’s foundation is cracked and worn, the locker-rooms are 20 years old, the cold tube is an old pickle barrel, and the weight facilities are off-site, and what’s available there is anything but up-to-date! The time has come and gone for change, we couldn’t get a Superbowl at the dome if every other stadiums roof collapsed.

It’s comments from Packer fans like this that make me proud to live in Wisco but be a loyal Vikings fan. Apparently the Packers have been good since the wheel was invented….. Except for the 1970s, 1980s, 90-92 until Holmgren turned their team around.

Get the stadium done, get rid of the doofus coaches and replace them with someone who has a grasp of reality, and kick the living S*** out of GB for the next 10-15 years so we can 1. Rule the NFC North, and 2. Shut up all the haters from Green Bay!!

The House Ways and Means Committee voted to move the bill along tonight. Still a long ways to go but it is one step closer. Listening to some of those against it in the House tonight, I get the sense they have no idea what is going on! When a House member says “a better bill might come along” it does leave me with a a feeling that he doesn’t understands the urgency. Better football, yes I will give you that. More bars maybe, but they are filled with Redwing boots and Carhartt jackets, and that is in Milwaukee. I guess if the Wisconsin “good life” is making 50,000 a year working 3rd shift riding atop a d8 Cat at some papermill in Park Falls, I will take my life here in Wisconsin’s doormat, the other “flyover” state….Unless you are flying Delta, which has a major hub at MSP, making it not really a flyover state afterall. You are, essentially, correct. As a truck driver who has operated extensively in both states, I will attest to the fact that there is little difference, both in landscape and people, between the two states. However, that just encourages the back-and-forth, especially amongst football fans. (MLB and NBA fans don’t get this heated….)

While I know it was not your intention, i still chuckled at the thought that more bars and better football make Wisconsin a batter state. Part of me agreed with that sentiment….. But the other part remembered I am no longer a frat boy.

Maybe I am mistaken, but have they addressed one of the biggest road blocks in the Metrodome sight? The fact that Minneapolis city charter says a public vote must take place to use public money for a stadium.

They will have to move it to an alternative site or more than likely face law suits if they go ahead without the vote.

I always wondered why a business that makes billions a year in profits doesnt just use NFL funds to build a stadium. They could build a new stadium in a different city each year. That way every city would get a new or renovated stadium every 32 years which is about the normal life of a stadium anyways.

But of course they wont because they always sucker the tax payers into paying for their profits. Could you imagine a company like Microsoft asking tax payers to build them a new factory because Google just built a new one in another city?

  61. racksie says: Apr 24, 2012 3:20 AM

Well tell Syd Davie to move to Minnesota, gain American citizenship, and get taxed to fund the Vikings. Good for him for spending an unbelievable amount of money to see the Vikings. He does not vote here, he does not pay taxes here, he just spends a little too much money on face paint. I am no less a fan than Syd, And probably more. I just don’t wear a costume to prove it. I vote. He does not. I pay taxes, he does not. Censor me if want, Florio, but I am a voting tax paying citizen of Minnesota, and the United States of America. And not a face painter. Sorry.

WI is a better football state on both the college and pro level. That extends down even to UW-Whitewater who in 2011 won its third consecutive NCAA Division III national championship (Go Warhawjks!).

    MN is colder than WI.

MN gave the world Bob Dylan.

WI gave the world Les Paul.

    Senate Rules Committee: Alan Thicke

Senate Jobs and Economic Growth Committee: Famous Dave

Ways and Means Committee: Grover from Sesame Street

I heard Marcel the Shell was on one of tickets, but didn’t quite get the votes. Probably because he was too confrontation and not artsy enough for a Minnesotan.

  69. purpleguy says: Apr 24, 2012 10:34 AM

Sadly, WI is better than MN in football right now (although ironically the Gophers football team holds more big 10 and national championships than the Badgers), and Packer fans may be more loyal as a whole in comparison (if that’s how a cheeser defines their worth). But lets get serious, every major study shows MN superior to WI in education, employment, average income, health/fitness and business. The reason there are so many cheesers at Vikings games is that half the state of WI lives here to find work — how many Minnesotans do you see moving to WI? Admitedly, WI is above us in alcohol consumption, obesity, violent crime, poverty and is the only state in the country where bars outnumber grocery stores.

  70. ruvelligwebuike says: Apr 24, 2012 11:01 AM

Purple Guy is correct. Beer, food, football and fun is forever shunned and looked down upon by the elites of Minnesota. As evidenced by them running their NFL team out of town.

Enjoy your day in your cubicle at Target Corp, your bland meal tonight, and your exciting evening of talking with your fellow Minnesotans about how elite you are compared to the other 49 states and about art, sculpture, and other things you only pretend to know about. So what your telling all of us “Sotans” ruvelligwebuike is that if we cross the St. Croix into Sconi to live, all of us would be in for more and better beer, more fun, better food(not bland…..I didn’t know you all spiced up your food so much more in Sconi than us over here??) and we would meet people we banter with on the internet face to face and settle our differences mono e mono……Sconi style?? Ok the Vikings guy you keep using for the picture is not only not a registered voter in Minnesota, he’ CANADIAN! If it matters. It’s my money that is being spent, not his.
    _________

And the money he brings into the state every year is about 5000 times more than what you would be asked to pay for this stadium. And guess what? If you don’t want to pay a cent for it, YOU DON’T HAVE TO!!!

So as a tax paying citizen of Minnesota, how do I NOT have to pay for this stadium?

Why don’t you look at what the deal is about before you make comments about it? The state’s portion comes out of new gambling revenue. If you don’t use electronic pulltabs or tip boards, you don’t pay. The city’s portion comes from an existing sales tax. If you don’t want to pay it, don’t buy anything in Minneapolis. It’s people like you who don’t even know how this is being funded that cause this to be such a problem getting passed.

Oh, ok, I just won’t shop in Minneapolis. Even though that’s where I live. That’s ignorant. And the gambling issue has very little chance of making it through the legislative process. Zygi should build his own stadium, with his own parking lots. My opinion.

    …..
Dude….its a sales tax that already is in use!!! It was used to fund the Convention Center, that is now paid off from what I know……funds will now be used for the stadium!! NO NEW TAXES!!! Do you think they would ever do away with that existing tax anyway…..NOW WAY!!! Why not just funnel the money towards a new Vikes stadium rather than some other BS downtown. i don’t get your hate!?!?!?
