Eli Manning: I’m New York’s third most talked about quarterback

AP

Giants quarterback Eli Manning has spent much of his life in the shadows of his famous father Archie and famous brother Peyton, so he’s accustomed to it if he isn’t the center of attention. Which is good because there are a couple of other quarterbacks in New York getting more attention than Eli right now.

Manning told Shepard Smith of Fox News that he thinks New York is paying more attention to Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow of the Jets than to him.

“New York Giants just won a championship, yet I’m still the third most talked about quarterback in my own city,” Manning said.

Manning doesn’t get as many back-page headlines as Sanchez and Tebow, but he can satisfy himself with a couple of Super Bowl rings.

  1. At this rate, I’d be happy to be the third most talked about quarterback. Eli you don’t need all that drama. Let the rings speak for you.

  2. What a massive ego on this guy. He’s won two Super Bowls, has millions of dollars, and all he cares about is if people are talking about him?
    Boo-freakin’-hoo, Eli.

  3. Eli just needs to chill. You have 2 championship rings. Who cares who is talked about more.

  4. And to think everyone thought Eli was going to be a bust. Top 5 Qb in the league. Would have that guy leading me team any day of the week. Crazy to think his best years are ahead of him. But let the haters hate, its ok. A couple of more SB rings will shut them up.

I don’t know why he’s whining about it. Everybody knows he’s far and away the best QB in New York. No need to cry about it
    =====
He wasn’t whining or crying. It’s fairly obvious he was joking around.

  6. I hope he’s just pointing out the irony, and not seeking attention. Eli, you don’t need the headlines, you’re a legend in NY. You’ll never need to pay for a meal again in that city. Be happy that you have EVERYTHING, and people are letting you live a quasi-normal life.

  7. Nothing negative about that Eli. As long as you know you are doing your job with excellence, who needs talk and the spotlight? Sometimes its much better to fly under the radar – lets you focus on what has to be done to accomplish goals.

  8. Ask anyone from out side of NYC, NYC doesnt embrace their sports stars like small market teams.

The Giants are not that big of a deal in NY City. Walk all day through out Manhattan and tell me how many jerseys you see – Could literally be 0.

I did see a man wearing a dress though, not that there is anything wrong with that.

  9. Everyone knows its bad to be talked about.
Look at the Jets QB situation.
Isn’t it good enough to have a SB in your pocket?
Show me a SB winning QB that loves attention…
Under what circumstance is it good to be talked about, I don’t get it.
Could Eli just be jealous? Is he still in denial about being elite?
    Keep thinking that, Eli.
    So, anyone for an anagram?

  10. but he can satisfy himself with a couple of Super Bowl rings.

Wait I thought he was married. That sounds more like Tebow’s wet dream.

  11. “I don’t know why he’s whining about it. Everybody knows he’s far and away the best QB in New York. No need to cry about it”

If you watched the video, you would know he was saying it as a joke. The whole audience was laughing. But, hey, don’t let something trivial, like facts, get in the way of your rant.

  12. Awww,Poor little Eli, maybe you should ask daddy what to do! after all he did put you in that big big city to fend for yourself with no one to help!

  13. I don’t know why he’s whining about it. Everybody knows he’s far and away the best QB in New York. No need to cry about it

    ———————————————-
He wasn’t crying it was said as a joke. PFT did not include the entire quote.

“New York Giants just won a championship,” Manning deadpanned to Fox News’ Sheppard Smith, a fellow Ole Miss alum who emceed the event, “yet I’m still the third most talked about quarterback in my own city. ”

“The crowd laughed, and the comment seemed to be made in jest by Manning, who is a budding comedian these days. He’ll host SNL on May 5 and was apparently shooting a recent DirecTV commercial with Deion Sanders, who plays a fairy in the dish company’s spots.”

  14. If the subject matter of the media attention was football, Eli would have more stories. I would imagine if one of you media dorks did a search on the stories & their theme & content we all would find that when reading about football, Eli was the top mentioned.

  15. Eli has really grown up over the years if you ask me. He seems more comfortable with the media and is starting to let loose a little bit more.

He’s right though. Giants are the Champs yet they are on the back page.

  16. Hey Lil Buddy ((Eli). My mother always said that as long as they’re talking bout someone else they aren’t talking about you. Sanchez and Tebow combined wouldn’t make a pimple on your butt. You’ve even out performed your own brother. A man that KNOWS who he is DON’T have to talk about it. “he who is first shall be last and he who is last shall be first. It’s better to be on the back and called to the FRONT than to to sit in front and sent to the BACK. Theyve got headlines, you’ve got our hearts. We know you’ve stood in the in the shadows for a long time, but your Hall of Fame days are coming. Tom who? Mark who? Mark who? Peyton who? He who humbles himself shall be exhausts and he who exalts himself shall be exalted. Rest in the peace of KNOWING your accomplishments. Let them talk, you just take the awards.

  17. Guys, he wasn’t whining, crying or stressing out over the fact he’s third most talked bout QB in NY.

Watching the video of where he made the comment.

HE WAS JOKING ABOUT THE WHOLE THING.

    Ever here of comedic observations?

  18. I love how so many people don’t know when someone (Eli) is joking. I blame our educational system.

  19. I’m still the third most talked about quarterback in my own city,” Manning said.

    ———————————

    Wait a minute…

Who are the other 2 quarterback’s he’s talking about?????

(sadly I have to say- sarcasm for those who wont get the joke)

  20. Anyone, who saw that interview knows he was just joking. Probably see more on Saturday Night Live. He did remind everyone that at the beginning of last season he said that these next seven years will be his best.

  21. Sanchez is talked about because he’s the California Golden Boy. Tebow is talked about because he’s the Kim Kardashian of football and is only famous for being famous. Eli isn’t as talked about as the other two, yet he has 2 Super Bowl rings…

Clearly, if you wanna be talked about in the NFL, winning and skill have little to do with it… further proof that average NFL fans aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer.

    God Bless America!

  22. The media loves drama. If Tebow ever settles into a stable, predictable, average role on a team, it will be the last thing we ever hear about him.

Guys like Eli and Aaron Rodgers just don’t offer enough melodrama for the media to chew on for weeks at a time. Seriously, consider how much time and space is wasted on soap-opera style drama, as opposed to telling stories about people who simply work hard and achieve success. The most attention Eli’s ever gotten has been from teen-drama-style snarky comments other people have made about him.

  23. Why are you Giants fan wasting time pointing out that it was a joke? Very few people on here say what they really think and instead prefer to troll. The entire point is to get you all worked up and you’re doing exactly that.

The more you win the more you’re hated…

  24. Didn’t realize how stupid some of the commenters are on this site. If you couldn’t comprehend the fact that he was joking around and believed Eli was actually being serious and complaining/whining about not getting headlines, then you’re pretty dumb.

  25. For the guys killing Eli….He has an extremely dry sense of humour. I will bet the house he said it with a big smile on his face!

  26. This is also a good reminder that the game of football is becoming secondary to the entertainment and marketing product it represents.

When everyone complains about the changes that Goodell & co. are making to the game, they’re falsely believing that the game is still the ultimate point of the whole enterprise.

Pro sports have always been about entertainment & marketing to an extent, but not nearly as much as they are now. The money involved has become too outrageous for anything like the whims of a game to determine its fortunes.

I can remember when the real drama was in the games. There were always personalities involved, but there was a much greater collective sense of This Game Is Important. It really mattered who won it. Now, it’s just dinner theater, a Vegas act designed to get people into seats and buying stuff. What happens on the screen is sort of a pleasant noise that creates an atmosphere for the real event.

The Giants are yesterday’s news because the game is no longer the story. It’s a soap opera now, where talk about the game means more than the game.

  27. Nineroutsider-

If only that were true…Unfortunately, people are idiots and you have to think that most of the time, the stupid comments are actually jsut stupid comments.

    …and Eli is hilarious.

What if you don’t already realize that this site is all about trolling now and it’s especially true for winning teams? What would that make you?

  29. Eli knows that the important is not to get the most headlines, it’s to get the right headlines.

    He’s a funny guy.

I’m not a Giants fan but I smell some sour grapes in the wine country.

  31. Eli Manning is the Art Monk of quarterbacks. That said, hopefully, he’ll get into the Hall of Fame a whole lot faster than Monk did. (14 years after retirement anyone?!?)

Perhaps it’s because adults don’t wear jerseys out and about on the street?

Did you miss the million plus when they paraded down the Canyon of Heroes?

  33. It doesn’t matter Eli. We all know your the best QB in NY and it’s not even close. You did something twice that the other QB’s in NY will never do which is win the Super Bowl.

  34. Eli is not whining, Eli is not complaining, Eli could not care less. His sense of humor is super dry, he thinks it’s funny. Eli is the man, two rings, cool as a cucumber. Giants fans are lucky to have him as their QB.

  35. Everyone needs to chill! If you listen to the actual audio he was joking around about it. Anyone that’s a Giants fan knows that Eli could care less about the media. Don’t be surprised if you hear him rehash this joke when he does SNL. He’s always excelled when under the radar. Besides, he’s got his hands full with his baby daughter.

Or you can ask the athletes who will all say all winning in New York is better than winning in any other city in the world.

  37. Let em talk about you when they induct you in Canton, Eli. Heck…. Maybe you can get Tebow to induct you! Of course you’d have to explain to everybody who that guy who inducted you was, but that should be easy, afterall you’ve been doing that with your Daddy for years! :-p

  38. Eli is someone that doesn’t want things blown out of proportion. Pretty much no situation to Eli is a big deal (unless it’s something very drastic). He has a very calm demeanor. As many stated above he was just stating something in a joking kind of way.

  39. Third most talked about.
    Most SB rings.
    Highest paid.
    Most endorsements.
    Most stability.
    Better Coach and Owner.
Clearly the best sense of humor.

I’m guessing Eli laughs his a$$ off every time he reads a jets story.

  40. “whatnojets says:

    Really?????
A jets fan trying to mock eli?
Please….. go worship the ONE trophy your team has – from 40 something years ago..
and don’t embarrass yourself by talking about your landlords

    BRAVO !!

  42. packersfn7 says: “eli and coughlin are some of the biggest whiners of all time”

The refs CLEARLY ignored the instant replay on the Jennings fumble and all but threw the rule book out for GB and the Pack STILL couldn’t win. Only one whining is you.

  43. “packersfn7 says: “eli and coughlin are some of the biggest whiners of all time”

Very funny – keep crying pack fans – i think the g-men have celebrated big playoff wins a couple times on the frozen gb field in the past few years……..
what a bunch of cry babies!!!!!!

  44. This article is a class example of why print and internet media is the cause of over-sensationalized “news”. I saw the interview with Eli he wasnt whining he was joking. And its true everyone is talking about a starter who has notdrowning progressed (Sanchez) and a guy who has played in just over a dozen games. And then there’s the “other” Manning who has actually done more than these two nukes.

    ——————————————

Really? You think the educational system should be teaching “identifying jokes” when it can’t even properly teach “math” or “science” or “english”?

  46. I’m not a Giants fan, but I have to defend this guy. People can say all they want about Eli, but he just keeps winning. He’s a non nonsense guy that gets the job done. He has doubled number of Super Bowl rings that Payton won, and hopefully makes people stop wondering if the Giants should have kept Phillip Rivers (how many rings does Rivers have?).

  47. Don’t worry Eli, NY reporters like talking about the Jets because they are so dysfunctional. Everyone around here knows who owns this town.

You cant spell Elite without Eli!

    Go Blue
