Eli Manning: I’m New York’s third most talked about quarterback

elisanchez AP

Giants quarterback Eli Manning has spent much of his life in the shadows of his famous father Archie and famous brother Peyton, so he’s accustomed to it if he isn’t the center of attention. Which is good because there are a couple of other quarterbacks in New York getting more attention than Eli right now.

Manning told Shepard Smith of Fox News that he thinks New York is paying more attention to Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow of the Jets than to him.

“New York Giants just won a championship, yet I’m still the third most talked about quarterback in my own city,” Manning said.

Manning doesn’t get as many back-page headlines as Sanchez and Tebow, but he can satisfy himself with a couple of Super Bowl rings.

I guess Eli doesn’t pass the Mom test.

  2. jhart615 says: Apr 25, 2012 3:10 PM

I don’t know why he’s whining about it. Everybody knows he’s far and away the best QB in New York. No need to cry about it

  3. bearsrulepackdrool says: Apr 25, 2012 3:10 PM

At this rate, I’d be happy to be the third most talked about quarterback. Eli you don’t need all that drama. Let the rings speak for you.

  4. anthonytx says: Apr 25, 2012 3:10 PM

What a massive ego on this guy. He’s won two Super Bowls, has millions of dollars, and all he cares about is if people are talking about him?
    Boo-freakin’-hoo, Eli.

  5. The Buffer Zone says: Apr 25, 2012 3:11 PM

I’d rather be Eli Manning any day of the week over the other two…Especially on Sundays.

  6. johnnyb819 says: Apr 25, 2012 3:12 PM

Eli just needs to chill. You have 2 championship rings. Who cares who is talked about more.

  7. manuich1 says: Apr 25, 2012 3:13 PM

And to think everyone thought Eli was going to be a bust. Top 5 Qb in the league. Would have that guy leading me team any day of the week. Crazy to think his best years are ahead of him. But let the haters hate, its ok. A couple of more SB rings will shut them up.

  8. brenenostler says: Apr 25, 2012 3:14 PM

That’s because there’s no controversy with you. I would view that as a good thing.

    Keep winning Super Bowls Eli.

Eli is still whining about this stuff? Christ.

  10. mike bonserio says: Apr 25, 2012 3:15 PM

He wasn’t whining or crying. It’s fairly obvious he was joking around.

  12. dbones750 says: Apr 25, 2012 3:18 PM

I hope he’s just pointing out the irony, and not seeking attention. Eli, you don’t need the headlines, you’re a legend in NY. You’ll never need to pay for a meal again in that city. Be happy that you have EVERYTHING, and people are letting you live a quasi-normal life.

  13. catquick says: Apr 25, 2012 3:18 PM

that might not be a bad thing, Eli

  14. cowboycjn says: Apr 25, 2012 3:19 PM

Nothing negative about that Eli. As long as you know you are doing your job with excellence, who needs talk and the spotlight? Sometimes its much better to fly under the radar – lets you focus on what has to be done to accomplish goals.

  15. marvsleezy says: Apr 25, 2012 3:21 PM

Ask anyone from out side of NYC, NYC doesnt embrace their sports stars like small market teams.

The Giants are not that big of a deal in NY City. Walk all day through out Manhattan and tell me how many jerseys you see – Could literally be 0.

I did see a man wearing a dress though, not that there is anything wrong with that.

  16. seanmmartin says: Apr 25, 2012 3:21 PM

Everyone knows its bad to be talked about.
Look at the Jets QB situation.
Isn’t it good enough to have a SB in your pocket?
Show me a SB winning QB that loves attention…
Under what circumstance is it good to be talked about, I don’t get it.
Could Eli just be jealous? Is he still in denial about being elite?
    Keep thinking that, Eli.
    So, anyone for an anagram?

  17. bearsrulepackdrool says: Apr 25, 2012 3:22 PM

If you watched the video, you would know he was saying it as a joke. The whole audience was laughing. But, hey, don’t let something trivial, like facts, get in the way of your rant.

  19. 69firebird says: Apr 25, 2012 3:26 PM

    ———————————————-
He wasn’t crying it was said as a joke. PFT did not include the entire quote.

“New York Giants just won a championship,” Manning deadpanned to Fox News’ Sheppard Smith, a fellow Ole Miss alum who emceed the event, “yet I’m still the third most talked about quarterback in my own city. ”

“The crowd laughed, and the comment seemed to be made in jest by Manning, who is a budding comedian these days. He’ll host SNL on May 5 and was apparently shooting a recent DirecTV commercial with Deion Sanders, who plays a fairy in the dish company’s spots.”

  24. johnnyjagfan says: Apr 25, 2012 3:31 PM

If the subject matter of the media attention was football, Eli would have more stories. I would imagine if one of you media dorks did a search on the stories & their theme & content we all would find that when reading about football, Eli was the top mentioned.

  25. blacknole08 says: Apr 25, 2012 3:32 PM

Eli has really grown up over the years if you ask me. He seems more comfortable with the media and is starting to let loose a little bit more.

He’s right though. Giants are the Champs yet they are on the back page.

  26. whatnojets says: Apr 25, 2012 3:34 PM

  27. kodakinvegas says: Apr 25, 2012 3:36 PM

Hey Lil Buddy ((Eli). My mother always said that as long as they’re talking bout someone else they aren’t talking about you. Sanchez and Tebow combined wouldn’t make a pimple on your butt. You’ve even out performed your own brother. A man that KNOWS who he is DON’T have to talk about it. “he who is first shall be last and he who is last shall be first. It’s better to be on the back and called to the FRONT than to to sit in front and sent to the BACK. Theyve got headlines, you’ve got our hearts. We know you’ve stood in the in the shadows for a long time, but your Hall of Fame days are coming. Tom who? Mark who? Mark who? Peyton who? He who humbles himself shall be exhausts and he who exalts himself shall be exalted. Rest in the peace of KNOWING your accomplishments. Let them talk, you just take the awards.

  28. rackitradio says: Apr 25, 2012 3:37 PM

Guys, he wasn’t whining, crying or stressing out over the fact he’s third most talked bout QB in NY.

Watching the video of where he made the comment.

HE WAS JOKING ABOUT THE WHOLE THING.

    Ever here of comedic observations?

    Wait a minute…

Who are the other 2 quarterback’s he’s talking about?????

(sadly I have to say- sarcasm for those who wont get the joke)

  33. wferg1121 says: Apr 25, 2012 3:45 PM

Anyone, who saw that interview knows he was just joking. Probably see more on Saturday Night Live. He did remind everyone that at the beginning of last season he said that these next seven years will be his best.

  34. yankees2009 says: Apr 25, 2012 3:48 PM

Sanchez is talked about because he’s the California Golden Boy. Tebow is talked about because he’s the Kim Kardashian of football and is only famous for being famous. Eli isn’t as talked about as the other two, yet he has 2 Super Bowl rings…

Clearly, if you wanna be talked about in the NFL, winning and skill have little to do with it… further proof that average NFL fans aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer.

    God Bless America!

  35. rcali says: Apr 25, 2012 3:49 PM

Because you are boring. Your wife thinks about Sanchez when she’s with you.

  36. kevpft says: Apr 25, 2012 3:49 PM

The media loves drama. If Tebow ever settles into a stable, predictable, average role on a team, it will be the last thing we ever hear about him.

Guys like Eli and Aaron Rodgers just don’t offer enough melodrama for the media to chew on for weeks at a time. Seriously, consider how much time and space is wasted on soap-opera style drama, as opposed to telling stories about people who simply work hard and achieve success. The most attention Eli’s ever gotten has been from teen-drama-style snarky comments other people have made about him.

  37. yankees2009 says: Apr 25, 2012 3:50 PM

Eli may be joking, but let’s be real: Sanchez and Tebow get far more headlines than Eli.

  38. nineroutsider says: Apr 25, 2012 3:53 PM

Why are you Giants fan wasting time pointing out that it was a joke? Very few people on here say what they really think and instead prefer to troll. The entire point is to get you all worked up and you’re doing exactly that.

  41. nzyme says: Apr 25, 2012 3:59 PM

For the guys killing Eli….He has an extremely dry sense of humour. I will bet the house he said it with a big smile on his face!

  42. kevpft says: Apr 25, 2012 4:01 PM

This is also a good reminder that the game of football is becoming secondary to the entertainment and marketing product it represents.

When everyone complains about the changes that Goodell & co. are making to the game, they’re falsely believing that the game is still the ultimate point of the whole enterprise.

Pro sports have always been about entertainment & marketing to an extent, but not nearly as much as they are now. The money involved has become too outrageous for anything like the whims of a game to determine its fortunes.

I can remember when the real drama was in the games. There were always personalities involved, but there was a much greater collective sense of This Game Is Important. It really mattered who won it. Now, it’s just dinner theater, a Vegas act designed to get people into seats and buying stuff. What happens on the screen is sort of a pleasant noise that creates an atmosphere for the real event.

The Giants are yesterday’s news because the game is no longer the story. It’s a soap opera now, where talk about the game means more than the game.

    …and Eli is hilarious.

And its true everyone is talking about a starter who has notdrowning progressed (Sanchez) and a guy who has played in just over a dozen games. And then there’s the “other” Manning who has actually done more than these two nukes.
