Nate Webster guilty on four counts of unlawful sexual conduct

natewebster Getty Images

An Ohio jury has found former NFL linebacker Nate Webster guilty of four counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, a conviction that could result in Webster being sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.

Webster was also charged with gross sexual imposition and sexual battery but was acquitted on those charges. He was also acquitted on a fifth count of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.

Prosecutors accused Webster of having a sexual relationship with a girl when she was 15 and he was in his 30s, and of threatening to kill her and her family if she told anyone. Webster admitted he had sex with the girl but claimed it was consensual and that the sexual relationship began after she turned 16, which is the age of consent in Ohio.

Judge Ralph Winkler said after the jury announced its verdict that he expects to sentence Webster to prison, and he ordered Webster jailed until his sentencing hearing on June 6. Webster turned down a plea deal that would have forced him to spend four years in prison.

Webster played for the Buccaneers from 2000 to 2003, for the Bengals in 2004 and 2005 and for the Broncos from 2006 to 2008.

    1. It’s perfectly appropriate to show him in his Bengal’s uniform since he will be wearing stripes for a while.

    2. The lesson, as always, is take the deal.

    3. No, it isn’t morally fine if she was 16. But legally it made a difference, and it was the only legal defense. Statutory rape-type crimes (variations of “having sex with a minor”) are strict liability, and the only defense is that the minor was actually of a legal age to consent to the act.

  28. beelicker says: Apr 25, 2012 2:35 PM

For the sake of factual accuracy, Nate Webster played (barely, mostly due to injury) in 4 games with My Precious Tissue Paper Tigers in 2004-5, previously playing 4 years for the Tampa Bay Bucs & 3 years afterwards with the Denver Broncos.

    http://www.nfl.com/player/natewebster/2504184/careerstats

The incidents for which he was on trial here occurred post-retirement ca 2010 when Mr Webster was a ‘defensive coordinator’ for a local HS & with the daughter of an apparent “Bengals employee”

  41. bucs13 says: Apr 25, 2012 2:48 PM

On second thought, while I already articulated my reasons why I think a Bengals uniform is appropriate, I really think they should do the following:

Photoshop Mr. Webster into a Saints uniform, in a picture of him listening into a sidelines communication made by the Steelers, so he could get injury information and target Steelers players for bounties, thereby causing them to not win one of the SuperBowls they were entitled to.

That would cause a perfect storm of comments.

  43. smacklayer says: Apr 25, 2012 2:49 PM

The fact is that there are many 15/16 year olds who are fully developed and out there being sexually active. This is something I think some of us may be able to excuse if a guy mistakenly found himself having sex with a girl he picked up in a club with a fake ID, or something like that.

However according to what I have read, he fully knew her age and engaged in sex multiple times, knew it was wrong and threatened to kill her family. Are you kidding me?? He gets what he deserves here.

The Bengals are not even in the top 5 since 2008. Yet it is fun for everybody to find the first picture of somebody if they ever played in a bengals uniform that this is the one they pick. How about you grow a pair and find a picture that actually shows who he is or the team that…I don’t know….that he last played for!

I guess it could be worse, I guess you could have said ex-bengal guilty. This dude had concentual sex and because he doesn’t have money like Big Ben he will actually do the time rather than get away with it. I think it was probably a good idea Florio didn’t post this tidbit of news, because I would have had alot to say about a man who constantly brings down the Bengals with arrests when his great QB is a serial rapist.

  50. ez4me55 says: Apr 25, 2012 3:06 PM

This is so atypical of the press, Nate played for Cincinnati 2004, 2005 and it is automatically pinned on the Bengals. What about showing him in either of the other 2 uniforms. He was with the Bucs and Broncs longer yet it is more of a story if it is attached to Cincinnati. I for one take extreme offense to this rendition.

“This dude had concentual sex and because he doesn’t have money like Big Ben he will actually do the time rather than get away with it.”

Ignoring the issue that the girl’s family was threatened, you’re missing a key distinction.

By law, she couldn’t consent. Now, you might think it is ridiculous that she magically can start consenting at when the clock strikes midnight and she turns 16, but that’s the way it is. It’s arbitrary, but the line has to be drawn somewhere. Which means this-

Webster couldn’t argue that she consented. His only defense was that she was 16.

OTOH, Big Ben could allege that there was consent. That’s a factual issue. You could say that you believe him or not (I don’t believe him). But consent would be a defense to the charges he was facing.

    Yo Bengal fans,

Stop being whiny tools. It is correct to show him in a Bengals uniform since it’s Ohio where the crime occurred and it’s may have been the daughter of a former Bengals coach who was the victim. You are fans of a team that signs or drafts all these criminals. Deal with it.

  61. ambitoos says: Apr 25, 2012 3:35 PM

Nate Webster had a cup of coffee here, yet you choose a pic of him in a Bengals uni (surprised you actually found one). Pathetic. Maybe you could take it a step further and find law-breakers who might have spent a training camp w/ the Bengals.

You could say “former Bengals training camp invitee arrested”. As long as Bengals and arrested are in the same sentence you guys are happy. The Bengals haven’t had an abnormal amount of arrests since 2006, but don’t let facts get in the way of your agenda.

  65. ez4me55 says: Apr 25, 2012 3:48 PM

Wrong. See Ohio Rev. C. 2907.04 (Unlawful sexual conduct with a minor). There’s no special “she’s a hottie, and he’s a horny teen” exception. It’s gender neutral. Moreover, many states have extra-special laws or sentencing enhancement for people that abuse their positions of authority in these cases (like teachers).

It’s the same crime. Whether society views it as heinously is a different issue (and to find out, ask a few fathers).

j0esix[sic?]pack says: What’s everyone’s hang up with him being in a Bengals uniform? That’s apparently when it happened

Not too swift at math OR reading comprehension, are we Joe?

Since your own ‘corroborating’ link states the girl in question is only NOW 18 years old, & the crux of the defense was whether she was 15 or 16 at the time of the offense, clearly the events in question happened AFTER Webster was clearly RETIRED from the NFL.

& just for more factual accuracy, Hue Jackson was QB coach of the Oakland Raiders in 2010 before ascending the the HC job in 2011. Before that he was QB coach of the Baltimore Ravens in 2008/9. Hue was WR coach of the Bengals in 2004/5 when Webster also was on that roster (mostly on IR), so the daughter was 10/11 years old at that time.

Nor are you considering the prosecution stated that she’s the daughter of a Bengal’s employee.

… that’s a heck of a coincidence that a former Bengals player just happened to meet the daughter of a Bengals employee – what are the chances???

… and yet you and other Bengals fans claim there’s absolutely no association between the Bengals, Webster and this crime.

Why don’t you worry less about whether your favorite team jerseys are in a photo and more about the welfare of a young girl raped at gunpoint?

Because unlike you she’s not posting obviously idiotic & erroneous comments on this site?

You stated it “obviously happened” when Webster was in a Bengals uniform (which is a patent untruth), which was 2004/5, when the incident(s) in question obviously happened (clearly according to your own linked ‘evidence’) when Webster was retired & not wearing any NFL uniform(s). Hue was also obviously not employed by the Bengals when these incidents in question happened (although he is now in 2012).

Ca 2010 both Webster & Jackson happened to have resided in the same neighborhood in Cincinnati – although neither were directly affiliated with or employed by the Bengals at that time.

Maybe we should be better spending time worrying about when you’ll be changing your handle to “joesixwonderlic”? Admitting you’re an idiot could be an important first step in your recovery …

Goobs, No one cares how well your Bungles have done in the last few years. All we care about it that justice is served to an Ex-Bengal player to commited a heinous crime. You have to be one of the shallowest posters I’ve seen on this board. Goobs, you are truely a POS, tool.

    Yo Bengal fans,

This case involves a former Bengals player accused of doing the crime in Cincinnati so it’s entirely approappiate to show Webster in a Bengals uniform.
The more whining you do, the more it shows the bigger tools you are.
