But Nick Collins is an excellent player, and I am sure that if the Packers were like other teams that just care about selling tickets, they would play them. But Mike McCarthy said if Nick was his own son, he would not let him play. Collins had a great career, made a lot of money, and won a superbowl. He should walk away before he sustains a serious injury.

This has nothing to do with lack of loyalty–I think is was the most loyal decision to Nick to let him go. No Packers fan wants him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

They just TREATED LIKE A PIECE OF MEAT BY CUTTING HIM!!

Ask Collins if he would rather make $4mil. this year or not!

If they wanted to treat him well, they could have waited through the offseason, received other medical opinions.

If it was decided by the beginning of the season that he couldn’t play, put him on IR so the guy could make his $4mil. for the year as AN EARNED REWARD for the sacrifice he made to the pukes.

That would have been an example of really having your players’ backs.

But, no team, including mine does this.

Why?

Because it’s a BUSINESS.

All McCarthy did was say a few kind words around the fact that THEY CUT HIM OFF AND HIS $4mil this year!

It is too bad Nick wont be able to play. He was one of the better Defensive players on that unit.

Ted Thompson will find someone to take nicks place. Ted has a way of finding talent and developing talent .

The Packers will be fine, and their Defense has nowhere to go but up.

In the 2010 he pulled down something like $14 million in bonuses and base salary and was the *highest paid* player on the team that season. He’s already received most of the money from the contract since it was front loaded.

To the person who thinks the Packers “owe” Collins a year paid on I.R., you’re insane. He was injured in week 2 last year, he’s already had sufficient time to get his ducks in a row. I highly doubt he’s been counting on NFL income over the past 8 months. He’s had time prepare for whatever situation he’s faced with.

Sidenote: I’m sure Ted Thompson really appreciates this dipstick agent leaking the news the day before the draft. This guy isn’t even his primary agent. thanks, doofus.

If you talked to Collins, privately, he would hope the packers would “not give up on him”.

My God, what a Minnesotan. Pretty sure they IR’d him last year in Week 2. He was signed to a long term deal, and he was paid in full last year.

What do the Packers gain by letting one of the top safeties in the league go to save money? They signed him to a long term deal that was front-loaded. Unlike the Vikings, they are a financially sound team…and their pass defense was atrocious without him. They need him more than he needs them if he can still play.

I like how you are so in touch with Nick’s feelings, though, since you’ve obviously talked with him and his family.

The reality is this: it’s a business……if the doctors said he could play, the packers would not release him. They said it was questionable, so they make a BUSINESS decision to release him.

Is that why McCarthy basically said he would not let Collins play before Collins was even examined by the doctors? The question is not whether he can play, it’s whether he can play and not be at risk for a more serious injury.

My guess is that Collins would fully prefer for the packers to NOT cut him, so he can earn $4mil. this year.

Maybe, or maybe he’d like to play for another team willing to take a risk so his release was granted.

This just goes to show you that football players are not ALWAYS a piece of meat to a team. Tough call for the pack to make….Good luck Nick!

Must be tough being jaded and cynical all the time.

He pretty much did get a year of IR pay last year. Having said that, a fused neck is going to remain a fused neck no matter how much time off is given to the player. When your agent is telling you to walk away then that is a pretty good indication you need to walk away.

Evidently the Broncos have no problems with that. Why not give him a shot?
