I believe Steve Smith because, according to anonymous sources, several members of the Carolina Panthers learned of the Saints Bounty program. Then They kicked in 10,000 dollars to any Saint player who could put Smith on IR.

Do you really think Saints defenders were getting fined for not taking cheapshots? Do you think the players would have put up with that? Maybe one of the guys did tell Steve Smith that. Players are always jawing back and forth trying to get into each others heads. That would have certainly gotten into Smith’s head if he started thinking he’d be cheapshotted every time he got the ball.

What does he have to gain? Well piling on a divisional rival is a good reason.
Also jabbing back at the Saints, who SWEPT the Panthers THE LAST TWO YEARS.

Do you fools really believe a divisonal rival would tell an opponent that he’d be fined if he didn’t try to purposely injure Smith?
And that if this was true that there wouldn’t be any Saints players pissed off about this policy?

What does he have to gain?
Actually he has a lot to gain.

Benefits:
Another unsubstantiated (but heavily reported) allegation against the Saints designed to weaken the organization. Causing the current Saints front office to spend time addressing this BS which draws away from the critical planning necessary to figure out how to prepare the team for the next season.

Bringing this BS into the current Sports Press Frenzy environment could influence Goodell to institute harsher punishments against Saints players; removing more experienced players that he runs routs against.

I remember Smith running up to Payton numerous times during games last season and cussing at him. Yeah, Smith has no axe to grind against the Saints. He’s a real class act.

Yeah, this from a guy whose own teammates went to the coaches and told them that if the coaches don’t get this guy under control, they would in their own way.

Smith and the Saints have been at each other for years. Just watch any Panthers/Saints game. Maybe he’s being truthful and maybe he’s just adding some salt.

Ha ha ha dunin40 I was thinking the same thing. 1 just because he was never asked about it before means zero. Me as a player if I were hit late and was told after that basically we will get fined if we don’t cheap shot you to hurt you would def bring that up and with his mouth it surprises me he didn’t. 2 I seriously doubt that another player told smith hey man we have to do this or we get fined lol that is laughable. 3 Steve smith has a lot to gain by this now reffs will be quick to flag the saints for less that borderline hits which makes life easier for Steve to do his thing and finally the more nonsense piled on maybe gets the saints in more trouble and the more they have picks and coaches they lose te more chance Carolina has of being relevant again

Not sure what Smith would have to gain by making this up. When he gives interviews he comes off as incredibly candid and thoughtful providing interesting points about what it’s actually like to step onto a football field. Do I honestly believe that Smith’s exact words were “Hey man, but that out”… not a chance; nor do I believe the exact phrasing of what the player said back to him. In the heat of the game, who knows what that player actually said/meant, but either way Gregg Williams was up to some pretty shady stuff and, unfortunately for him, has left it very difficult for us not to believe stories like this.

yeah and you’re a liar. Go to youtube and search for “Favre bounty bowl”. There’s a vid with every hit on Favre in the NFCCG. Please post the time of the low hit on Favre aside from the high low (there’s a good view of that hit which clearly shows the right tackle tried to push McCray past Favre which resulted in the low hit).

Smith is one of the smaller receivers in the league- yeah, so he has a little nasty in him. He has been hanging with and beating bigger guys for his whole career- it’s a means to an end. It’s effing football people, it’s supposed to be violent and physical. So, that being said, some who play the game may be prone to extreme bouts of agression. It is in their nature, if you don’t like it I recommend following bowling or womens tennis- those sports seem fairly tame.

HMMM diving at ankles is legal but definatley unecessary if a player is going out of bounds. That could explain to the Saints fans how they were able to get by with fewer than expected personal fouls while trying to injure folks. Fines for not doing it? Williams had to fund his program somehow and admitted to fines.

To be fair to Smith, one of the dirtiest hits I’ve ever seen was Scott Fuijita when he was playing for the Saints with a low hit to Smith’s knees when Smith ran a shallow cross over the middle (can’t recall if it pre-dated Gregg Williams’ time in New Orleans or not). Smith wasn’t even targeted for a pass on the play, and luckily did not suffer serious injury (just limped off for one play). But, as unnecessary, out-of-the-blue cheap shots go, that one by Fujita stands out in my mind as one of the worst, most premeditated I can remember.

I believe him, no reason to lie, and, as questioned in the article “why didn’t he name the player?” – he didn’t want to rat out another player, against NFL code. Look at the Sapp/Shockey situation. I think the Saints’ player was scared of Smith, so he said they get fined if they don’t cheap shot, instead of paid to do it.
