Team needs: Oakland Raiders

Reggie McKenzie, Mark Davis AP

The Raiders have undergone an almost complete front-office overhaul after the passing of owner Al Davis. Reggie McKenzie was hired away from Green Bay to serve as General Manager, and he tabbed former Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen as head coach. Unfortunately, the Raiders don’t have much of a draft left after Davis and old coach Hue Jackson’s freewheeling, trade-happy ways. Oakland’s first draft pick comes at the end of the third round.

Offensive line: Primarily a power-running team under Jackson, the Raiders are transitioning to zone-blocking methods up front under new offensive playcaller Greg Knapp. Knapp is one of the most run-minded coordinators of the modern era, so improving the front-five play is a must. The Raiders should feel comfortable with left tackle Jared Veldheer, center Stefen Wisniewski, and new right guard Mike Brisiel, but the other two line spots are up for grabs.

Tight end: In Green Bay, McKenzie had Jermichael Finley. Before his Denver stint, Allen saw Jimmy Graham’s potential as an assistant in New Orleans. Knapp had Owen Daniels. A tight end capable of creating mismatches in the passing game essentially runs in the Raiders’ new blood, and the only tight ends on the current roster are blocker Brandon Myers, H-back/fullback type Richard Gordon, 2011 seventh-round pick David Ausberry, and basketball project Andre Hardy.

Quarterback: Inherited from the old regime and approaching age 33, Carson Palmer doesn’t appear to be a strong fit for Knapp’s offensive system, which features mobile quarterbacks capable of making throws on the run. Palmer’s mobility has been shot since he tore multiple knee ligaments in January of 2006. And he’s not getting any younger.

Linebacker: The Raiders might be able to get by with Rolando McClain, Aaron Curry, and Philip Wheeler as starting linebackers, but they have precious little depth. Travis Goethel and converted defensive end Carl Ihenacho are the only other linebackers under contract in Oakland.

In all reality Raiders have their starters, really have no major needs. Yes the haters will tell you we need Wr’s OL, LB’s DL, Palmer sucks, etc….but fact is “if” the raiders can stay healthy , they will be in the post season, and win the AFC West.

In the draft add depth at LB, FS, TE, and maybe a lineman the can play both G&C just for insurance.

In my humble opinion there are still over 300 UFA that have yet to sign a deal, that have NFL expierence. Raiders will be just fine come the fall

    GO RAIDERS!!! GO REGGIE!

    Terrell Owens.

As crazy as that sounds, look at it for all the RIGHT reasons,

relationship with Carson Palmer – already working out with Raider WRs this March,

Raiders need for a true #1 on the outside,

    Running game is there,

Owens can notch up your passing game a few levels with the emergence of heyward-bey and moore as well.

    Sign T.O.

hes done with the foolishness, he’s ready

Mr. Silva, you forgot the glaring need at CB

  4. oldhighs says: Apr 25, 2012 12:13 PM

Leave it to Evan Silva to ignore a patchwork secondary (Bartell and Spencer, even with good 2012 campaigns, would be stopgaps at best) and an aging defensive line on a team that has been bottom-five in run defense for the last decade.

The Raiders will have a decent offense with Palmer having a training camp with his receivers, and if DMC can stay healthy. But on the other side of the ball they are in trouble. McKenzie has dumped a bunch of defensive starters and signed 2nd and 3rd team caliber players to replace them. It shouldn’t be too hard to move the ball and score on the Raiders in 2012. I suspect Oakland will be looking up at the rest of the division as the offenses of the Chargers, Chiefs, and Broncos hold track meets when they face the Raiders this season.

Funny how a guy who just turned 32 a couple of months ago and healthy is scrutinized, while Peyton who approaching 37, and is damaged goods is giong to lead the broncos to the superdome on feb 3rd….lmao…can’t wait to see the picture of Peyton in a neck brace after seymour lays down the hammer.

All those needs, and no picks until # 95.

But I guess they can rest easy knowing QB is secure with Carson Palmer at the helm.

Sometimes I feel sorry for Raiders fans – but then I remember… they’re Raider fans.

  11. joetoronto says: Apr 25, 2012 12:20 PM

Brandon Meyers is not just a “blocking TE”, the guy has very good hands too.

Having said that, David Ausberry has even better hands.

Palmer is allot more mobile than most people think, he’ll be just fine and he’ll rip the Bungals a new a-hole when the Raiders get to Cincinnati.

    Raider Nation!

I have been waiting all this time for this article, and this is the crap you write for me? The only one you got right is LB. After that or even more of a need is CB. Offensive line is by far the least needed position on the roster. I rarely have problems with the articles about any team, but this is bad.

Couldn’t agree more with some of these posts. It makes me laugh the way Palmer is being looked at being 33. If he’s “old” at that age, then why isn’t anyone talking about Manning’s age or Tom Brady, for that matter. Brady is older than Palmer and also had a knee torn up. Gee, I wonder when he is ready to run out of gas? Could be any minute the way people talk about Palmer. Nah, we’re just fine with Palmer.

The biggest misconception going is that Palmer is a bad fit for Knapp’s offense. Sorry, we’re not talking about Michael Vick type running ability needed for this system. Palmer can move well enough to make some roll out throws and run some bootlegs. For God’s sake, Schaub did it in Houston, and Palmer is at least as good an athlete as Schaub. Also, Al Saunders is still on staff as an offensive assistant. Oakland, make no mistake, will still run a lot of the stuff it did last year when Saunders’ philosophy was more front and center.

The offensive line is one of the best in the league. I would hardly call that a team need. The Raiders dod need some depth and some guys to step up at the LB position, and a TE needs to emerge (although Ausberry could become very good and Brandon Myers is really not a bad player). This team is not far off, regardless of the lack of picks. Oakland certainly can win the division as presently constituted. Anyone who doesn’t think so just hasn’t done their homework.

I can only agree with Mike on the LB needs. Raiders need to nab one in the draft and pick up some depth via FA and UDFA.

Mike should have included DLine in there. Seymour, while still productive, is getting long in the tooth and it would be nice to get a young gun in there to groom. Also, need more depth.

Not too worried with the OLine. I think Barksdale will step up. Although I really didn’t like the Barnes resigning, he should be good to go if DA can get him to Eli I ate his penalties.

I think people, especially defenses, better keep an eye in Ausberry.

The biggest need IMO has already been addressed, the release of Chucky Bresnahan.

    First Round
    QB Carson Palmer-starter

    Second Round
Traded to the Patriots for two picks that netted
OL Joe Barksdale and RB Taiwan Jones. -starter and backup

    Third Round
    QB Terrelle Pryor-backup?

    Fourth Round
    QB Jason Campbell-gone

    Seventh Round
Former first rounder- Aaron Curry -starter

So the Raiders 2012 draft has already netted 6 players, 5 of which are on the team and should contribute this season. The Raiders still have 5 picks to go in the draft so the team will collect at least 10 players from this years draft.

You see kids, this is closer to the truth than these so-called analysts will put out.

The Raiders have these “2012 picks” on the team already, with a year head start, and know what they have. The teams yet to pick do NOT.

This is why Reggie says he has clear confidence the on-field performances will not regress this year and should improve.

These are just weak, uninformed observations about the Raiders. These do not represent team needs heading into the draft.

Offensive line is one of the strengths of this team and he even highlights three out of our five starters are locks. Most NFL teams would kill to have three solid starters on the o-line. The writer is just recycling old writeups and hearsay and none of this will help come draft night. There’s no effort to serve football fans with this drivel.

I fully expect that #95 pick to be best defensive player available because an impact guy there will have a chance to start at LB, D-line or in the secondary.

Other than that yeah we’re looking for depth and diamonds in the rough. Tight End is a bigger need than most OAK fans realize and an athlete at that position can come in and shred defenses right away. Also I wouldn’t be surprised if we stick with those three linebackers as our starters and go outside the draft to get their backups.

Really? I wasn’t aware Matt Schaub was so mobile.

The offense is going to be fine. They were 9th in the league without DMac for a big chunk of the season. Where they need help is on defense, and they were the worst defense in football last year so anything would be an improvement.

I have faith in Reggie McKenzie to build this team. He’s got a great track record and has done a great job so far shedding big contracts for underwhelming production. The Raiders are going to be a lot better than you think.

Yes we are comparing Palmer to Manning(The second best Manning that plays in this league that is)

Qbs are measured by there championships and Payton has 1…you didnt get Tom Brady!!! The rest of your team was scrap before Tebow came in to save your season! Ok Palmer doesnt have a ring but he has more of a chance then Manning does…You will be lucky he can even start this season..

Funny to that if you say championships are what defines organizations the Raiders have 3..more then your donkeys or any other franchise in the afc west…and last afc west team to represent in a superbowl was the Raiders…

As for corners…yes a solid back up would be great but with Bartel and Spencer then add chekwa and Van Dyke as your young corners ready to take over dont see the need to go crazy on a corner

  32. onderin says: Apr 25, 2012 1:19 PM

I don’t really agree with this article. Kind of a strange list of needs given that the bulk of their problems involves the defense where they have the least amount of playmakers and depth. But that’s just my opinion.

Yeah, Knapp’s offense doe s not require Cam Newton-like ability at QB. Simple pocket rollouts and moving the pocket is all. The Knapp has stated that Carson fits perfectly in the system noting that Carson is not a speedster.

Donkos fans in a Raiders post should know Elway had to preserve his legacy in Dungver by getting rid of Tebow before he actually won a SB faster than he did, as an unpolished and unheralded QB with desire.
Elway’s shine in Dungver would have taken a major blow if Tebow had pulled it off.

  37. justwinbaby4life says: Apr 25, 2012 1:44 PM

The Raiders are gonna be just fine this year. We need depth and health to be competitive. Here are some moves that could help improve the team:

3rd Round – LB, CB, or S. I prefer the LB (Mike) to give flexibility to run a 3-4.

4th Round – DL. Get younger, prefer a NT that can play DT.

5th Round – Trade to ATL for T Sam Baker. Young, Cheap, and can play T or G. I like him more as the RT. Plus he lost his starting LT job and is expendale to ATL.

6th Round – RB. The guy from Utah St. is a beast and is a Bush-type runner.

    FA to sign:
QB – Matt Lienart, knows the offense and will be a cheap backup

S – Nick Collins, if healthy is a game changer. It will allow Huff to play Nickel.

Having watched Greg Knapp’s offense as a Seahawk coordinator or lack thereof I’m curious how this is going to work out.

Offensive play caller? That’s what we all thought of his play calling, offensive.

  39. jaialaicharger says: Apr 25, 2012 2:00 PM

The best thing that happened to the Raiders is the passing of Al Davis (much respect from a Chargers fan to Al).
Reggie M. seems to have a good plan but not much to work with for now and that concerns me as a Charger fan. The Raiders are heading in the right direction.

On a side note, did I really see comparisons to Carson Palmer and Peyton/Brady in earlier posts?
    ROFLMAO!!!

Peyton at 37 with a broken neck is far superior than a healthy 28 year old Palmer in his prime.

I know Palmer is the best QB Oaktown has had since Gannon but dont let that blind you guys. He is above average at best.

  40. jeremyb91 says: Apr 25, 2012 2:00 PM

Name a better QB Oakland could have got via free agency or the 17th pick in this draft? You can’t find one because Palmer is still a top 10 if not better QB in the NFL.

Limited draft picks, but at least the Raiders have something to show for it. Carson Palmer is more athletic than Matt Schaub and he’s done well. Pryor is by far the most athletic QB Gregg Knapp will get a chance to work with and it’s possible his skill set could work quite well in Knapp’s system. Taiwan Jones is a perfect fit for the zone blocking system and at worst Barksdale provides depth. And Aaron Curry could be the steal for a measly 7th round pick.

The RAIDERS had a Top 10 offense last year, while the defense was ranked near the bottom. If they play the same on offense and sligtly above average on defense, their chances of winning the division are decent. Three teams finished at 8-8 last year in the division, it will be just as close this year.

The RAIDERS need to address the CB position first and foremost. Everything else is secondary….

  43. yelix says: Apr 25, 2012 2:06 PM

No team is going to “own” the AFC West for the next 5 years. All four teams have a roughly equal shot of winning the division this year.

Oakland has a good offense and will probably be improved on defense. Kansas City should get back to being one of the top rushing teams in the league, along with breaking into the top 10 defenses. San Diego has talent, but really hasn’t gotten much better. Denver has Manning, who could make D. Thomas a no. 1 receiver.

The division is wide open, people.

Fun fact for charger fan: between the years 2000-2011 the RAIDERS have won more playoff games than the chargers, while at the same time having one of the worst runs in NFL history. So, when the RAIDERS are at their worst, they are still better than the chargers. Don’t you get it powder blue fan: the chargers have not won a game that mattered in 50+ years.

The Raiders will have a decent offense with Palmer having a training camp with his receivers, and if DMC can stay healthy. But on the other side of the ball they are in trouble. McKenzie has dumped a bunch of defensive starters and signed 2nd and 3rd team caliber players to replace them. It shouldn’t be too hard to move the ball and score on the Raiders in 2012.

humb0lt seems to believe that if he keeps saying this, it will be true. If you want to count Chris Johnson, who wasn’t starting at the end of the season, McKenzie dumped three defensive starters, and it wasn’t hard to move the ball and score on the Raiders in 2011, either. They led the universe in penalties, and still managed to win as many games as the Chargers. San Diego is going to have to play a lot better this season if they want to look down on any team in their division.

It’s going to take more than a couple of drafts to repair what Al did to the team once his sanity waned. That’s IF they don’t throw away all their picks in the future. Last place in the AFC West for the foreseeable future.

The Raiturds currently have gone nine (9) straight seasons w.o a winning record, including seven (7) straight seasons w at least eleven (11) losses, an NFL Record.

Enough w the predictions of winning the AFC West. Just try and win…baby.

I have to admit that it seems i see more negative comments about the Raiders than any other NFL team. I’m starting to think that the Raiders fans’ “haters theory” holds some truth. Carson Palmer will be a fine Raiders QB.. at 33 he is still kind of young compared to Manning. Greg Knapp will not expect Palmer to be something he is not. I read they will design the plays to fit him not the other way. Why Manning chose the AFC West turning down a lifetime contract with Tennessee is very puzzling. The AFC West is SACK HAPPY! I hope his shoulder holds up. I wish he had gone to SF.. that would have been fun to watch. I think the Raiders will surprise a lot of people defensively this years and that the offense will be scary “IF” the players can get on the same page. I think the Raiders lack a bonafied #1 WR and that will stunt the development of an otherwise very potent offense. They finished #7 in Rushing with McFadden missing 9 games and they finished 11 in passing with basically nobody. hmmmm. If they can stay healthy it will be a fun offense to watch. If they can find a tall fast WR with some hands – Lookout! As for Darius HeywardBey .. I dont get it.. cut the guy loose. If he has a good game the Raiders tend to lose…hmmmmm.. what is that? He missed a sure TD in the finale. I dont like the guy. Yeah he works hard but damn. He’s not that good. On Defense The Raiders take a stud NT and a true OLB they will make some serious noise. I like all 32 NFL teams, and fair assessment is fair. The Oakland raiders are going to make the haters hate even more.

Ok yea we had some bad records….But for a Bolt, Bronco or Chief fan to say we suck is funny…. I dont care what our record was..if we are 1-15 and the Bolts are 12-4 and we both dont win the superbowl….then I dont give a s#7t….If you dont win the trophy there is nothing to gloat about!!!!!!

Your ponies backed into the playoffs because the RAIDERS failed in week 17- don’t get it sideways. Three teams finished at 8-8 in the division last season, this season will be just as close. Big Reg is in charge now, not Mr. Davis, those draft picks are not going anywhere. Please pay attention to current events if you are going to post.

Another simpleton shows himself. Yeah, and in that same span of time they won more playoff games than the chargers and still remain the last team in the AFC West to represent in a superbowl. At their worst, the RAIDERS are still the best team in the division. These are facts haters, they can not be disputed.

Let me fix those for you.

Nickel Rusher. who’s gonna bring the heat and take Wimbley’s spot?

CB. Some serious problems here but with good pass rushing we could hide these issues.

Depth at G, C, DT, OLB, QB

Was the writer of this post even sober when he wrote it?

Way to completely whiff on you anaylsis (or lack there of).

Silva is the same guy who said the Raiders would draft Charles Brown back in 2010 in the first round (Raiders took McClain instead and Brown dropped all the way into the second round).

Quarterback a team need? You could have said that from 2002 to 2011, but let’s get real and current…Carson Palmer still has the potential to be a top 10-15 QB in the league and the offensive weapons and OL to do it in 2012.

Offensive Line is the #1 strength of this team going into 2012 (wrong again Silva).

LB and/or are needs but not more critical than DL, S, or CB right now.

Anyway will be an interesting draft and I like the idea of bringing folks like Collins, Clifton, and Owens on short term, low risk deals to bring some experience to the team for 2012.

  74. Matt says: Apr 25, 2012 8:04 PM

Kinda expected Florio to write this. He seems to know the Raiders a little better than Silva. No offense, Silva! You just have a knack for pissing off Raiders fans.

Anyways, on to the real concerns:
    - Speed rushing DE on passing downs
    - Speed rushing LB on passing downs
    - #2 Possession receiver to spell DHB

Josh McDaniels did more damage to your roster in two seasons than Davis did to Oakland’s in the last decade. And McKenzie won’t be throwing away draft picks. He won’t be giving up a first to take someone like Alphonso Smith, who got traded to Detroit for a bus ticket. There’s also Moreno, Walton, McBath, and others. Denver fans should not be talking about bad draft picks, unless they’re talking about their own.

Hey mullman: The Chargers won one game that counted last year…to the Raiders. Too bad your sorry team couldn’t win a must win at home, in what was essentially a playoff game. Big step forward there.

Still tasting that loss aren’t ya?

    Team needs:
3 tons of mascara for game day giveaways.
Bail money for players and fans alike.
A ticket for Joe Toronto. Guy should see one game in his lifetime.

  77. mullman7675 says: Apr 25, 2012 11:50 PM

@dasmol: Thank you for proving my point. Charger fans are so desperate for playoff wins they count bumping the RAIDERS off in Week 17 as a meaningful game. Too funny. The chargers had 10 years to get somethig accomplished and all they did is underachieve. Remember charger fans: nobody remembers regular season wins, it’s playoff victories and championships that count. The chargers have yet to join that club.

Peyton at 37 with a broken neck is far superior than a healthy 28 year old Palmer in his prime.

well you confirm that you are an idiot right there.
4 years ago Carson Palmer was at the worse the 4th rated QB in the NFL Most had him 3rd behind perennials Brady and Manning.

It seems you do not have the IQ to not even make license plates. Seems all you are good for is knee pads. However only after somebody kicks out your teeth so you have nothing but gums.

Wow! Threats of violence from a Raider fan? That is unusual. Since you seem to be the expert at license plates and with your temper i am starting to think you also wear a jumpsuit.

OK, I guess my IQ is not that good so I will try to use some logic here. 4 years ago, 2008 Palmer barely played because he was injured. lets go back 5 years to 2007, he had a decent year but had 20 INTs, and an 86.7 rating (For you Raider fans, that is not all that great but probably the best you have seen in a decade). His last 3 years he has not broken 4000 yards or had better than an 83 QB rating. And I can argue that he had better talent and coaching tahn Oakland has now. 2006 was his last good year, 6 years ago.

Stupid me to doubt that a QB can rebound after 6 years of mediocrity and zero career playoff wins. But it is the best you have had in 10 years so enjoy it, i hope those 1st round picks were worth it.

    Back to your cell!

  80. radrntn says: Apr 27, 2012 11:38 AM

ok einstein, we will just leave it at you profound comment that Peyton Manning with a broken neck is better than a 28 year old Carson Palmer who threw for over 4000 yards.
As far as the Qb rating , you are correct it is better than the great Raider Qb’s like Stabler, Lamonica, Plunkett, and Gannon.

At the same time it is also better than’s Bret Farves, Eli Manning, John Elway, Joe Theisman, Jim McMahon, Brian Griese, Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Johnny U, Len Dawson, Joe Namath, and Bart Starr’s. All these guys have a little something on their finger, and something in a case which you brilliant chargers know nothing about (by the way it’s better than Dan Fouts as well, but he is not woth mentioning with the above guys who accomplished something.

Keep making them license plates , and make me a few more that say RADRNTN

  81. jaialaicharger says: Apr 27, 2012 12:49 PM

Okay uncle Rico, keep haning on to those glory days. Still does not change the fact that your are stuck with an average QB that cost you your immidieate future.

mullman: You’ve been a raiduh fan too long. You’re jaded. All NFL games are meaningful games. That last one just happened to be more meaningful for the raiduhs, since it was essentially a playoff. Which they lost. To the Chargers. Go ahead and lie, mullman. Say that game wasn’t meaningful to either team. Then go wipe your running mascara, as you cry some more about the Chargers keeping your once proud team from returning to greatness.

And keep living off that glorious past there mullman. Your raiduhs are like my dinner from last night. It was a thing of glory in its time, now it’s just crap.
