Chandler Jones still expects to be a third-round pick

Defensive end Chandler Jones received a third-round grade from the NFL’s draft advisory board when he left school early, following his junior season. Jones says he hasn’t paid attention to any mock drafts since. And he still expects to be a third-round pick.

“Right now they say I’m ranked and can go as high as the middle of the first round, but I don’t feed into that at all,” Jones told WNST in Baltimore. “I’m still expecting third round, so if I do go higher everything will be a surprise.”

Jones was probably joking, but he sounds refreshingly down to earth for a 22-year-old about to collect multi-millions. Jones does come from humble roots. He was largely unwanted out of high school, garnering just a two-star rating as a prep recruit from Endicott, New York.

And now, NFL Network’s Mike Mayock believes Jones is capable of emerging as the best defensive player in the 2012 draft.

Join the club Chandler, I’m expecting to go in the third round too.

would love him on the Bills

    I’m intrigued by this kid.

Not because Mayock believes in him but because he is a raw talent without the sense of entitlement the majority of these kids have.

Scoop him up if he’s there in the third Broncos!

Hopefully Cincy takes him at 21.

Imagine how he will feel when he goes top 12.. Good for him

What a great attitude to have. But be prepared to be pleasantly surprised, kid, if you believe Mayock and Lombardi.

Hope you get to come to Baltimore and join your brother! And congrats to your other brother beating down Rashad Evans!

  8. goldrush36 says: Apr 26, 2012 3:45 PM

He’s got the right attitude at least

  9. shackdelrio says: Apr 26, 2012 3:46 PM

He won’t get past Seattle at 12.

I’m thinking maybe Jacksonville at 7 if Blackmon is gone.

I was kinda ignoring this guy until I saw more than one mock sending him to Seattle at 12. So I started to look for information.

One of his brothers plays for the Ravens, and the other is into that MMA/UFC stuff. This kid grew up facing high-level competition just to get a seat at the breakfast table. I’m sure he’s going to be a fine pro.

The last guy from Syracuse to go in the first round that weighed as much as this guy was a QB.

  12. chaser44 says: Apr 26, 2012 3:48 PM

Eagles should grab him with one of their 2 second rounders, the 55th is their 2nd one I think. That way they can take best available with 15, hopefully an outside lb with 46 (zach brown maybe), and chandler jones to be the successor to babin who is 32. That would make a pretty formidable dline with cole and jenkins.

Would love it if Ozzie let him join his brother in Purple and Black.

  14. patge93 says: Apr 26, 2012 3:51 PM

one of the few defensive players i really like this year. heĀ“ll go at least top 15 !

  15. gridassassin says: Apr 26, 2012 3:51 PM

    Worst case mid 2nd round

  16. mrdeezy says: Apr 26, 2012 3:51 PM

Actually hes probably just fake and disingenuous like his brother Jon

  17. peachyc39 says: Apr 26, 2012 3:51 PM

Seems like a pretty humble kid. He should do well no matter what team chooses him.

NFL draft expert Mock Wayoff expects Jones to be the best defensive player from this draft. “He could be another Robert Ayers”, opinied Mock, referring to the player he once predicted as the best defensive player from the 2009 draft.

So did 99% of the world until 4days when he became the best pass rusher in the draft.

Chan Jones… I was hoping he’d be a quiet storm and drop to 29… Really wanted him to fall and join his brother Art here in Baltimore. Oh well… as long as he doesnt end up on Cincy, Cleveland, Pitt, Jets or Chargers I’ll have no beef!

  21. greenbleeder says: Apr 26, 2012 4:01 PM

Chandler, EAGLES are on line 1…

  22. jjbadd says: Apr 26, 2012 4:04 PM

Broncos should scoop him up at 25! I ain’t buying into Doug Martin, which is who is expected to be the Broncos 1st pick…

  23. lolb23 says: Apr 26, 2012 4:07 PM

If Mayock says he is the best defensive player in the draft then that means he’ll probably bust.

  24. realdealsteel says: Apr 26, 2012 4:15 PM

I see the kid sliding down in the first round. But a team like the Falcons or Patriots, who both need a DE will give him a long look.

  25. RedSox83 says: Apr 26, 2012 4:26 PM

Would look good in Big Blue at 32, move Kiwanuka back to DE and you just upgraded your NASCAR package, Trade Osi to some stupid team for a 2nd and our 4th that missed out on a DE, draft TE Dewayne Allen. Boom, nice draft.

  26. htownftw says: Apr 26, 2012 5:00 PM

Please tell me that everyone knos that his brother is UFC fighter Jon Jones. No wonder he’s a freak with a high-motor, someone take him in the first!

  27. icomehereforthecomments says: Apr 26, 2012 5:17 PM

@Mrdeezy dude you are right on about the not so humble bones Jones !! Any real hardcore MMA fan knows Jon is as fake as mark Sanchez spray tan.

But I think Chandler might be a Lil different. I’m sure Arthur has got him in check. The dude comes from a extremely athletic family and house potential is of the chart

  28. mancave001 says: Apr 26, 2012 6:03 PM

No worries all! The Eagles will take him, after which he’ll pull a Broderick Bunkley/Winston Justice. You’re safe, other 31 teams!

  29. bleed4philly says: Apr 26, 2012 6:50 PM

    We’ll take him!
