Ted’s philosphy has been to take the best talent available regardless of what position he plays. So, it’s a very happy outcome to have that strategy snare a bookend for Clay.

Yeah, who knows if he’ll be in Clay’s class. We won’t know right away … I took more than half a season for Clay to emerge.

But …. imagine what happens if Nick Perry is in Clay’s class. That will be fun to watch. That will force some early throws and make our secondary look better. It will make Clay better. If you double team both outside LB’s then you get pressure up the middle …. makes it much easier to slip a blitz through the middle.

Here’s hoping that Green Bay’s last defensive play of next February’s Super Bowl is a joint/simultaneous sack of the AFC QB on a failed desperation 4th and 14 conversion attempt. Go Pack Go !!

when i said i’d rather have upshaw it was because perry seems to want to play in a 4-3 more. if he can learn how to cover, and be willing to play standing up the i’ll be happy. really only time will tell.

I would love to see this guy become an instant difference-maker, but logic dictates wait-and-see. It’s funny how few #1 picks actually materialize into #1 performers. The true sign of a good draft is the sleepers that show up late and surprise everybody. That’s what I am waiting to see (fingers crossed.)

*ONE* pick and the Packers are in the Super Bowl, or more popularly here, doomed. Gee… I don’t think so. A long way to go, and Thompson does his best work in the lower rounds anyway. Hope to see him get a DE, S, CB, and OL in his next few picks. Then we’ll see.

Gotta pause with this Perry, taking a ‘wait-and-see’ attitude. Somewhat similar to Bruce Irvin’s situation:

At best, in a couple years Perry develops into a complete 3/4 OLB (e.g., at least ‘sufficiently’ covering TE’s which few if any 3/4 OLB’s do excellently), that is, after dropping down to the 255pnd range, gaining some lateral agility, and getting coached up by Kevin Greene. If this happens, he was worth a first-round pick.

At worst, after a couple years, Perry proves to be no more than just a 3rd down pass rush specialist, with both the speed and the size/upper-body strength to not get as rag-dolled by OTs as our other ROLB’s have woefully been. If this is all he ends up being, he wasn’t worth a 1st rnd pick, but I wouldn’t declare that to be a bust. (More in the A.J. Hawk category of something between a boom and a bust.)

A nice healthy dose of mocking the Pack’s choice. I’d be worried if everyone was saying it was a good one. Pete Prisco gave the Pack a “C”. He gave the same grade to the Pack’s choice of Clay Matthews. I hope he ends up with just as much egg on his face this time around.

I don’t focus on names, pre-draft. As Brian Bilick says “nobody knows anything”. But I sure am happy to get a pass rushing OLB early. Now we get to see if Nick Perry can play at the NFL level.

He has great speed 4.59 in the 40 and he’s 271, he benched 225 pounds 35 times and had a 38.5″ vertical leap. That kind of athleticism is what you want in an LB – right?
I think coverage will be something he has to learn.
With that kind of size and speed he should be fun to watch. As always, we’ll see. I certainly trust Ted’s evaluations of players over the the various analyses you get for free everywhere. Eleven more picks!

I think it will be ok, he may have prefered 4-3 but Capers likes to mix things up and give different looks, so hopefully this leads to confusion and mismatches next season.
