Panthers select linebacker Kuechly at No. 9

The Carolina Panthers made it clear before the draft that they would target productive college players capable of contributing in year one at the No. 9 overall pick. Despite some reports linking them to North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples, the Panthers used the selection on Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly.

Kuechly’s addition will likely kick incumbent middle linebacker Jon Beason over to the weak side. An incredibly productive collegiate, Kuechly racked up 532 career tackles for the Eagles, including 35.5 tackles for a loss as a 38-game starter.

He also won the 2011 Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker.

safe pick. smart pick. very little chance of bust potential. he will be a baller. half of these d-linemen will be journeymen or out of the nfl in a few years.

I like this pick. It’s a gamble, because our d-line was atrocious last year, but our linebacker corps was depleted with injuries to Beason and Davis (who might well be done after tearing his ACL again). I guess something turned them off to Coples; there were rumblings about his motor but it sounded like the standard pre-draft grumblings.

It’s not an exciting pick, but it makes sense.

If Davis isn’t injured, you’re talking about a potentially great LB corps.

I like it! NFC South TEs, you’re on notice. This guy is fast and brings it.

As I get older I don’t follow college as close as I used to. Never heard of him but his stats are solid. Hope he clogs up the middle.

He’ll be doing a lot of tackling on that weak run D.

fletcher cox would have been my pick but i can live with it(mainly because i have no choice) seems like a low risk high reward pick. lets get a DT or CB in the second

BLEACHER REPORT graded this pick as a D

Luke Kuechly, Inside Linebacker, Boston College

The Panthers needed to go defense, but the smarter pick would have been Stephon Gilmore (CB, South Carolina) or a defensive tackle. The fact that they drafted an inside linebacker has us shaking our heads in the B/R war room.

Kuechly is a good athlete, but the huge gap at defensive tackle won’t help this catch-and-tackle type linebacker who lacks the strength to take on blockers and make plays.

Kuechly should be an OLB to start off. Beason will be in the middle.
