Vikings take Matt Kalil after trading down

The Vikings could have gotten USC offensive tackle Matt Kalil if they stayed at the third pick in the draft.

They were able to add three picks as a result of their deal with the Browns, however, and still wound up with the player they wanted with the fourth pick. Kalil is the top left tackle in the draft and will step in as the starter for the Vikings on the day he signs. Minnesota desperately needed an upgrade at the position and Kalil should help both Adrian Peterson and Christian Ponder next season.

Kalil has been linked with the Vikings for quite some time, but the last week saw some doubt cast on whether they wanted him or not. They sent plenty of feints toward LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne, but, in the end, Kalil turned out to be their man.

  1. I’m glad they picked Kalil instead of Claiborne. Kalil instantly improves the whole offensive line as now Johnson can move over and be an upgrade at guard. Build the offense first, then work on the defense. I hope we can trade back into the first round with all these extra picks. Reuben Randle, anyone?

  2. Is it just me, or does Spielman look like a genius so far this offseason? He knows the Vikes are rebuilding and not going to win the North. Sign a bunch of guys that want to prove themselves to 1 year, low money contracts. Bluff your way to a few extra picks. Then still take the guy that the team NEEDS in Kalil. Keep up the good work Rick!

  3. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this draft for the Vikings so far, and that floors me. Great pick, great trade with absolutely no down side. Browns, what the hell?

The Bucs were going to trade with the Vikes for Richardson… thats why the Browns moved up, and they have a million picks, who cares in CLE … Vikes are happy. win win

  6. Dumb move… We need db and wr… And ponder is left handed so wtf! We dont need an lt!!!! Also shoulda got way more for the pick and traded down 1 more time to the jags…. Mediocre move… Should coulda got more!!!!!

The Vikings actually got three picks from Cleveland? This was the best draft day move for the Vikings since taking AP.

    Cleveland=SUCKERS !!!!!!!!

Was a good move for both teams I believe. I’m sure the Bucs were offering something for Richardson as well, so Cleveland had to make the move to secure their player. Good move on both teams parts IMO.

    Grow up child.

Kalil was the safe pick and solidifies the offensive line.

  9. Great pick Vikings! Great job trading down for extra picks too! Keep up the good work Speilman – don’t be afraid to trade up for another 1st round pick for a WR or CB/S.

  10. Good for him – now he can just switch from day classes to night classes and finish his degree without ever moving!

  11. I can’t understand why Tampa gained so little from their move and the Vikings cleaned up. Oh well, great move

Rick? Ah, I see…a good pick and your on first name basis, eh? ; )

  13. Cleveland has some “splaning” to do. Someone help me out with why Cleveland would do this?

  14. Don’t get me wrong, I am very happy that the Vikings were able to get extra picks and still land Kalil.
Gotta wonder what Cleveland was thinking though, giving up three picks to move up just one spot. Maybe Tampa Bay spooked them with the talk of trading up for the number 3 pick.
I wonder how much input Chilly had with this trade?

  15. Not a Vikings fan but your GM made the best move of the draft!! Got the guy he wanted all along and 3 additional picks in later rounds for moving down one spot…..lol….that my friends is FLUCKING SMART!! My team needs a GM like that!

  16. As a feom Los Angeles and a Vikings fan, from long beach. I pray SKOL stay in Minny (yes I’m a lakers fan too). I could not see calling my team the LA Vikings. Anyways I’m happy with the trade and extra picks I would have like seeing us take Claiborne and then J Jenkins in the 2nd round. I want to come out the Tampa 2. I’m the laughing stalk of my army unit but I refuse to STOP rooting for my MINNESOTA VIKINGS. SKOL Forever SB BOUND 2015. Packers fan talk trash but I’ll laugh cuz you always were only good for a window in time. Your windows have closed like when A Carter, J Browner, K millard, C Doleman were making you call uncle. GO VIKINGS. 2015 is our year

  17. The Vikes used leverage of a possible trade with Tampa to make Cleveland give up so much. Very smart move. Hopefully with all these picks (17 in total), we can make a big move by grabbing 2 blue chip players in round 2.

  18. Browns offered more than the Bucs to trade up, that’s why they gave up so much. They didn’t get fleeced. Really it was a god move for the Browns and the Vikings.

Ponder is a RH, you dolt. The draft is deep with DBs and WRs. This was the right pick and masterfully negotiated by Spielman. I’m impressed.

  20. Good points on the posts as to why Cleveland had to out bid Tampa to guarantee taking Richardson.

Spielman was masterful over the last two weeks to pull this off.

Could the Vikings actually be doing something right for a change?
