Eagles draft Nick Foles near end of third round

The Philadelphia Eagles selected former University of Arizona quarterback Nick Foles with the 88th overall pick in the draft.

A 6-foot-5, 244-pounder, Foles started 33 games at U of A after transferring from Michigan State. His career record was 15-18, though Foles posted a 66.9 completion rate and 67:33 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He excelled on checkdown passes in college and isn’t much of an athlete.

Considering Eagles coach Andy Reid’s history with developmental quarterbacks, though, Foles could wind up being traded for a second-round pick in a couple of years. This season, Foles figures to compete with Mike Kafka and Trent Edwards for Philadelphia’s No. 2 quarterback job behind Michael Vick.

    Arizona’s QB of the future.

  2. armchairqb says: Apr 27, 2012 10:54 PM

The Eagles found a QB that actually sucks more than Vick. That’s quite an accomplishment for their scouts. Way to go!

  3. thesmartest1 says: Apr 27, 2012 11:00 PM

Never ever doubt Andy Reid with a QB.

  4. obamablowz says: Apr 27, 2012 11:11 PM

Washington Redskins QB after they realize RG3 can’t play.

  5. bleed4philly says: Apr 27, 2012 11:12 PM

If Andy Reid turned Donovan McNabb into a Pro Bowler, he can turned this guy into a solid 2nd round trade bait.

  6. bag217 says: Apr 27, 2012 11:14 PM

I don’t watch college football, so I will be the first to admit that I don’t know anything about these guys being drafted. If he’s “not much of an athlete” why pick him?

  7. gabe77 says: Apr 27, 2012 11:16 PM

This pick was about one thing and one thing only. Getting another young QB on the roster so Andy Reid can get another contract extension so he can “develop” him. Andy Reid as a QB guru is such a farce and the fact that he’ll probably get a new contract out of it makes this an awful pick.

  8. slippyal2 says: Apr 27, 2012 11:19 PM

If he can’t beat out Trent Edwards, then he has no business in this league.

  9. therealhook says: Apr 27, 2012 11:24 PM

He’ll pull of something with him… Trade or delveloped, it’s a good pick.

    Or a buffet line.

  11. eagleschic says: Apr 27, 2012 11:28 PM

Well, we couldn’t have gone through the whole draft with out making 1 awful pick. This pick tells me Andy will be here for a while. Was this guy really a 3rd rounder? I think we reached here. We should have waited till next year to draft our future QB

  12. xx4zu1 says: Apr 27, 2012 11:29 PM

Two years from now after they highlight his skills in a few winnable games he will be the hottest quarterback that no one knows anything about and some dumb@ss team will give up a high draft pick and the eagles will be laughing again.

  13. cleverbob says: Apr 27, 2012 11:31 PM

I guess this means Edwards is out…

  14. bleed4philly says: Apr 27, 2012 11:46 PM

Nice to have a qb who can see over the offensive line.

  15. jag8917 says: Apr 27, 2012 11:54 PM

Speaking as a Giants fan, never underestimate Andy Reid and his ability to get his QBs to overachieve. He truly is a QB guru.

  16. rajbais says: Apr 27, 2012 11:58 PM

    Reach!!!!!!!

They’ll regret not taking Kirk Cousins!!!!

  17. stanklepoot says: Apr 28, 2012 12:05 AM

Reid almost put an end to the Pats unbeaten regular season with A.J. Feeley under center. If he can’t get something out of a QB, no one can.

  18. jwayne111 says: Apr 28, 2012 12:06 AM

Ditto on the last…I say Vick misses 2 games to injury this year (maybe more ?)

  19. dwntwnbadboy19 says: Apr 28, 2012 12:14 AM

“He excelled on checkdown passes in college and isn’t much of an athlete.” Now thats a funny evaluation, wish Mayock would say more stuff like that rather repeating “I love this pick”

  20. arrghmakeitstop says: Apr 28, 2012 12:19 AM

If he gets Donovan’s old number he could be ‘Nick Foles Five’…

    I’ll show myself out.

  21. randallflagg52 says: Apr 28, 2012 12:40 AM

Well since Weedon is getting up there in age Cleveland might as well send Philly a third rounder and Joe Haden for Foles.

  22. jacksaysfu says: Apr 28, 2012 12:56 AM

I’ll admit that I don’t know much about Foles , but I know their O-line and WR’s were trash . He’s 6’4 230+ and has a 70% completion rating , and seems like a perfect fit for Andy’s west coast offense . God forbid Vick misses games this year I think Foles can keep those chains moving. He may turn out to be great or he might be a bust but the Eagles first 3 picks were pure gold….. Fletcher Cox is hands down the best DT in the draft , Mychael Kendricks is a fast & powerful LB who tackles everything and was the pac12 defensive player of the year . While Vinny Curry had 11 sacks &22.5 tackles for loss (3rd in nation). He’ll be a great rotational player adds youth , depth and eventually will be Babins replacement . The Foles pick is a ? mark but so far the Eagles draft deserves an A+ , which is impressive cause they’re usually terrible at drafting.

  23. rodgy10 says: Apr 28, 2012 12:56 AM

This guy is overrated , they were talking up his completion percentage and TD/INT ratio on ESPN, I watched a few Arizona games and they ran shotgun and threw bubble screen probably 60% of the time. Career backup imo, however, Andy Reid can work with marginal talent

  24. rodgy10 says: Apr 28, 2012 1:00 AM

Video evidence of my post above, I watched this entire game. Foles was like 35 out of 45 on almost all bubble screens (not exaggerating, terrible job by UW) and the announcers were talking him up like he was superman. Eventually a UW linebacker stepped in front of the bubble and Foles cost them the game…..

  25. oldbyrd says: Apr 28, 2012 1:20 AM

Let’s see what happens. Fact: He is a good pocket passer. Probably as good a backup as they have now.

  26. chasemutley says: Apr 28, 2012 1:29 AM

He will be the starter in 2 years. This is Howie’s guy; and he needs Andy Reed to help prove him right.

  27. jacksaysfu says: Apr 28, 2012 1:33 AM

Curry was C-USA Defensive player of the year & Kendricks was Pac 12’s Defensive player of the year .Philly finally got an impact LB in the draft and team him with Demeco Ryans and Chaney or Rolle and the worst LB trio last year suddenly turns into one of yhe leagues best . Team them with Cole,Jenkins,Cox,Babin, patterson,Curry,Dixon, and Landri and throw in Asomugh & DRC and our defense is going to be a force next year… As long as they draft a slot CB and maybe a big WR redzone target than Roseman & Reid finally get an A+ for this draft . They also need OT depth & a back-up RB , but they can add those guy’s late in the draft , through players who go undrafted , teams cut , or through the free agent market. But those 3 picks were so incredible !

You must be out of your GD mind thinking that trading up for a Boom or Bust DT, and a non-winning QB that can only complete the short passes. Kendricks was a great pick up but, to say the Birds get an A+, that’s just silly. B- so far.

  29. sasquash20 says: Apr 28, 2012 2:00 AM

    @jacksaysfu
I agree with everything you said for the most part. The front 7 is looking very nice. I do think we need a major up grade in DBs. Asomugh should be fine but DRC scares me. I just don’t think he is very good. Would love a big red zone WR, maybe Marvin McNutt, or Juron Criner would fit that role. Back up RB would be nice, Chris Polk, Lamar Miller, or super sleeper from North Texas Lance Dunbar.

  30. eaglebranded says: Apr 28, 2012 2:40 AM

Agreed to jacksayfu couldn’t say it no better.slot corner with fourth or safety in the fifth either or whatever is getting scared in talent first . Nate Allen will be alright if they go ahead and spend a little money on bell then corner and the offense they can start adding pieces. Foles never seen much of him but Andy and Marty knows how to handle him. Plus I’m not that quick to give up on Kafka. Last year he had vince in front of him basically because of the money they were paying him . He did ok in Atlanta i think maybe if he knows he is number two and Andy show him he got faith in him. Instead how he held back with him in the game . Maybe and I mean maybe he will suceed or don’t just don’t be the one to lose the games he half to play in emergency.

    Two things I’ve learned:

1- Never buy mutual funds from the guy who works at the batting cage.

2- Never trade anything more than a ’76 Pinto for an Andy Reid quarterback.

  32. joeyd524 says: Apr 28, 2012 6:45 AM

Yo cuz relax there rookies..you don’t know what you have yet + you still have a physchotic turnover machine at qb. I can see 10-6 and out the first round

  33. jdandcoke says: Apr 28, 2012 6:53 AM

i like the eagles draft so far…..for once they actually look like they know what theyre doing. if the giants remain relatively healthy this year, unlike last year, it wont matter though.

it must really blow for gms throughout the nfl….no matter how much homework they do, the giants tandem of jerry reese and mark ross will always draft better players.

  34. cmdrsmooth says: Apr 28, 2012 7:24 AM

    The next Tom Brady.

  35. djm426 says: Apr 28, 2012 7:48 AM

  36. greymares says: Apr 28, 2012 7:57 AM

whether this guy turns out to be good or a bust at least for me they are trying to find a pocket Q.B. with arm strength, that will play the standard version and not run with the ball unless absolutely necessary. I would like to see a kick returner that can double as a back up running back or d.b. I don’t see the need at corner based on the fact that they drafted the Marsh kid last year, he didn’t get to show much because the Eagles were over crowded at the position, given a chance I think he will be fine. Big Back-up Tackle ?

  37. kevsright says: Apr 28, 2012 8:59 AM

    Bad Newz’ replacement!!

    GOODBYE, Vick.

  38. mancave001 says: Apr 28, 2012 9:48 AM

I don’t like this pick. Loved the first two, but not this one. I liked Kolb better than this kid for sure.

  39. bigbluefan1 says: Apr 28, 2012 10:04 AM

OK so Andy is great at making QB’s

When and how has he done that ?

McNabb was a the 2nd pick of the draft and Vick was the first.

I would guess they were thought to be made prior to draft day as those picks are not wasted on project players.

So who are these guys that reid has made great?

  40. olcap says: Apr 28, 2012 10:48 AM

Yeah, any Reid-coached QBs won a super bowl?

  41. demonspank says: Apr 28, 2012 11:10 AM

olcap: Yeah, some guy named Brett Favre.

  42. jluns275 says: Apr 28, 2012 12:21 PM

Look at Vick’s play, maturity, passing stats, & won/loss record at PHI vs ATL.
    Night & day.
Also, look at McNabb’s everything at PHI vs WAS & MIN.
    Again, night & day.
Reid made Kolb look like a serviceable starter-look at Kolb now. He probably won’t be able to beat out John Skelton @ ARI, despite the big contract.
Lastly, he helped develop Favre, along with Gruden & Mariucci.
That’s a pretty good record of developing QBs in my opinion. No championships for Reid & his QBs is lamentable at this point, but not the only measure of success for a QB. You could do alot worse than be mentioned along with Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, Dan Fouts, etc.

  43. phootballphorever says: Apr 28, 2012 1:40 PM

I like this kid. Good arm, good size, a bit raw but has all the tools to succeed. Get some good coaching to modify the mechanics and I think he’ll be just fine.

  45. jmbates10 says: Apr 28, 2012 2:54 PM

Good pick….he is a good QB. Good passer with pocket presence and Reid will make him better. I saw a lot of him and he will surpise you.

  46. sasquash20 says: Apr 28, 2012 5:29 PM

hey jacksaysfu Foles didn’t have trash at WR. He had one guy who was drafted this weekend and could be a solid pro in Juron Criner. Criner’s last 2 seasons 157 rec, for 2.189 yards and 22 tds. Foles is a reach and will at best be a back up QB. My grade on this pick is a D-.

As for the whole draft I give them a solid B
Cox fits well into Washburn’s system, and it only cost a extra 4th and 6th to move up for him. The 4th we got back trading down in the 2nd. Grade A

Kendricks is a good talent and Pac 12 defensive player of the year, but can he play the SAM?Grade B

Curry was a small school stud and team captain and leader. Grade B

Foles was a reach. Grade D-

Boykin is a football player. Probably a slot CB who will struggle with bigger WR. Good special team player. Grade B

Kelly I will admit I don’t know much about. I like what I read about him but his grade is INC

McNutt is a solid red zone potential WR.Grade C

  47. randallflagg52 says: Apr 28, 2012 5:37 PM

    @bigbluefan1

Lets see here. Brett Favre, Mark Brunell, Matt Hasselbeck, AJ Feeley, McNabb, Kolb, Vick (somewhat), and he brought out some old Jeff Garcia that wasn’t seen since him time in San Fran.

Not to mention all the QB’s he guided in college who because excellent NCAA players. Brigham Young is famous for it’s excellent QB play (at the college level anyway) and Reid is responsible for a lot of that reputation.

  48. bigjdve says: Apr 29, 2012 11:10 AM

rodgy10 – that interception was off a WR, that isn’t the QBs fault, unless you consider under thrown, though that just could’ve been a misread from the rec, which happens.

However I like this guy, he has alot of upside, I also think that he is more durable than Vick.

  49. oldbyrd says: Apr 29, 2012 2:39 PM

Jacksayso….one thing wrong Chaney is medicore at best and Rolle is far to short typical 7th rounder that just can’t play at that level……Hope Reid does it right and gets one more Good Linebacker. Then The Three Stooges become, THE THREE MUSKETEERS

  50. philahitman says: Apr 29, 2012 3:42 PM

    Ah! My bad.

Of course we all know that Brett Favre would have been nothing without Andy.

  52. jacksaysfu says: Apr 29, 2012 8:55 PM

@oldbyrd: I think Rolle was a 6th rounder , but I think the kid has a chance to be a quality LB . He was able to make the field as a rookie and he improved as the year went on . I know he’s short for a OLB but there’s no height requirement to be a good football player (i.e Darren Sproles ) The majority of the best CB’s in the league are like 5″10 and they match up against 6″3 WR’s every week . . I personally like Rolle more than Chaney , but Ryans in the middle and Kendricks and Chaney/Rolle manning the outsides is a MAJOR improvement over last years LB’s . The Eagles had an A+ draft and our D will be a top 3 defense next year… To the giant fans , i know your team won the super bowl last year (golf clap) , but stop acting like your teams unbeatable. Philly was 1-1 vs N.Y , hell the Redskins spanked your team both times last year . The Eagles will own the NFC East in 2012
