LaMichael James heads to San Francisco

Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio - Wisconsin v Oregon Getty Images

The 49ers did in the second round of the 2012 NFL draft the same thing they did in the first round: Added speed and playmaking ability to their offense.

In the first round their pick was Illinois receiver A.J. Jenkins, and in the second round the selection was Oregon running back LaMichael James.

James was one of the best offensive players in all of college football during his time with the Ducks, and he’ll be a nice change on an offense that also has Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and Brandon Jacobs.

This pick makes no sense. Unless they intend to part way with one of their ‘backs.

  2. korton92 says: Apr 27, 2012 9:19 PM

The Niners will use him in the same way Darren Sproles.

2012 SF 49ers: “The Speed The Speed The Speed!”

Did not see this one coming.. Pretty obvious they took the highest rated player on their board.. pretty crowded backfield… and we went from a slow moving power running beast to a thunder and lightning offense.

  5. cletusvandam says: Apr 27, 2012 9:26 PM

Don’t get this pick at all. The Niners have something like 7 RB’s on the roster now. If there is a bright side hopefully Brandon Jacobs will be cut now.

  6. fxws says: Apr 27, 2012 9:26 PM

I thought they’d be happy with Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter…

  7. jvibottomline says: Apr 27, 2012 9:31 PM

Frank Gore is old people, prolly be Gore, Hunter, James, and Dixon

  8. franknunley57 says: Apr 27, 2012 9:32 PM

Love this player. Love the pick. Big play maker. Not going to settle for 50 fgs again this year.

  9. howmanyringsyourteamgot says: Apr 27, 2012 9:35 PM

I love this pick for the Niners. James gives the offense that explosive home run threat and a great complement to Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter. Adios Brandon Jacobs and Anthony Dixon.

  10. keramidas21 says: Apr 27, 2012 9:36 PM

I was really hoping the Packers would take this guy. The 9ers are going to use him more as a receiver out of the backfield. This kind of shows (along with Moss and A.J. Jenkins) that the 49ers are trying to switch to a passing team instead of a running team.

  11. ctiggs says: Apr 27, 2012 9:37 PM

5 rbs now i dont understand, but i wont question trent or harbaugh anymore after last years draft.

  12. sisqsage says: Apr 27, 2012 9:38 PM

Gore doesn’t have much left in the tank and got beat up last year. Was really slow vs. the Saints in the playoff win and took himself out of the game when they needed him the most in the 4th qtr. vs. the Giants.
With aging RBs, it just gets worse, not better. They need younger legs like James from the Ducks.

  13. mrlynch33 says: Apr 27, 2012 9:39 PM

Anthony Dixon can’t be too happy…

  14. nineroutsider says: Apr 27, 2012 9:40 PM

I hope that AD can find a way to beat out Jacobs. Both of them are tiptoeing power backs oddly enough, but AD is younger and less drama. I don’t mind keeping 4 backs, but that means only 5 wide-outs (peace out Williams) and 2 TE’s unless they short another position.

Harbaugh is crazy about competition and it shows. If he’s the best on their board, all good. Pretty cool that they now go for the best available. Hope they hit on most of these guys like last year!

  15. goldrush36 says: Apr 27, 2012 9:40 PM

I like the possibilities of a Hunter/James backfield on those short 2nd/3rd downs…. A lot of edge speed and explosiveness

  16. puckfitt says: Apr 27, 2012 9:42 PM

James will be used like Bush or Sproles. Utility Player. 3DRB/WR/RET/Wildcat. He will likely replace Dixon and Williams on the roster.

Gore will be the main guy, Hunter the reliever, Jacobs short yardage and goalline.

  17. theytukrjobs says: Apr 27, 2012 9:42 PM

One too many RB’s clearly. Is Kendall Hunter trade-worthy, or not really?

They can cut Jacobs but that is kind of busch league to sign a guy and cut him for no reason.

It seems that the 9ers must have been really, really high on this kid.

  18. rodgy10 says: Apr 27, 2012 9:42 PM

Rams fan here…..we’re screwed!!!! 49ers are deep and talented……

  19. travisblink619 says: Apr 27, 2012 9:43 PM

I love this pick. What was San Francisco’s biggest problem last year??….3rd down conversions, right? This giy is so quick and has good hands. Will help specifically in 3rd down situations. Besides, outside of the guard position and maybe the secondary, the 49ers have luxury picks written all over them.

I see you point, but Jacobs will have to compete to make this team. They can keep 4 backs, but only 2 QBs or 5 WRs or…you know the drill.

  23. cakemixa says: Apr 27, 2012 9:56 PM

lol, people comparing this guy to sproles, yet how many other RBs were picked before him?

  24. NakedCowboy! says: Apr 27, 2012 10:27 PM

awesome pick! i watched all 49ers games in past few years… gore is on decline and might be done in couple of years… jacobs is mostly just a goal line back now… and this guy has huge upside…

  25. franknunley57 says: Apr 27, 2012 10:36 PM

    cakemixa

bro, the comparisons stem from their size, explosiveness and ability to score from anywhere on the field. he is not richardson.

  26. jnova80 says: Apr 27, 2012 10:44 PM

Why would Hunter be traded? After his rookie season I’m pretty sure he earned his spot as the #2 guy. Jacobs and Dixon are the question marks. I like the pick, very competitive back field. Awesome three headed attack.

  27. 49erstim says: Apr 27, 2012 10:52 PM

I was surprised by this pick. Good value though.

  28. raiderrob21 says: Apr 27, 2012 10:59 PM

As you can see from the responses Whiner fans have no clue what they are talking about. Sproles, Bush, etc? Seriously? Solving 3rd down conversions? Really? Alex Smith is still the QB
I think they need OL help and QB. 1st 2 picks are positions they don’t need.

  29. soobster says: Apr 27, 2012 11:16 PM

James is a 1st Round talent taken entirely too late. The 9er’s are fortunate he was available. Much like other previous well run teams… the rich get richer.

  30. bigcali4life says: Apr 27, 2012 11:22 PM

Interesting, yet good pick when you think about it. During the year and especially the playoffs, the only person on the offense who had speed to create seperation was Vernon Davis. Jenkins and James add speed to create some mismatches and to keep the Safties honest on the opposing teams.

I would say with so many backs now, it would be pretty cool if Harbaugh and co. ran a version of the Double-Wing Offense with James and Hunter as the Wing backs and Gore as the tail for maybe a play or two a game.

This tells me they might be pretty high on Kilgore and converting Boone to Guard in order to take over.

  31. kleppnasty says: Apr 27, 2012 11:25 PM

Love when raider fans give draft advise…. Love the pick, offense went from slow and meticulous to fast and big play potential.

Carson Palmer? That trade set your team back at least 5 years.

  33. woodsidegil says: Apr 27, 2012 11:32 PM

raiderrob21…how’d we do last year with that crappy QB Smith and how did your Faiders do with Pick Six Carson? Did you reach the championship game? Since you know everything about the Niners needs you must possess great insight into running an NFL franchise. Most 49er fans don’t know anything about your roster because it’s irrelevent and won’t make any difference anyway because you’ll be lucky to end up 3rd in your division.

It must be frustrating to watch everyone making moves to improve their teams and your trying to convince yourself that Carson was worth the 1st this year and the 2nd next year.

5 rbs now i dont understand, but i wont question trent or harbaugh anymore after last years draft.

Actually that makes 6. Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, Anthony Dixon, Brandon Jacobs, Rock Cartwright, and now LaMichael James. I realize if they keep all of them Dixon and Cartwright are going to be special teams, but they are primarily a RB. I say dump Dixon for sure. He can’t run outside the tackles and isn’t good for anything but 1-2 yards per carry. I like the idea of a 3-headed monster of Gore, Hunter, and James with Bruce Miller in the backfield.

Lol at the dumb raider fan trying to question peoples picks in a draft.

  38. thermalito says: Apr 28, 2012 12:26 AM

James is really explosive and a great addition, but does this spell the end for Kendall Hunter?
Funny James was taken even higher than Reuban Randle, a receiver that all the draft experts had ranked higher than A.J. Jenkins. Obviously there’s a disconnect between GM’s and media blabbermouths.

  39. discosucs2005 says: Apr 28, 2012 12:34 AM

    @raiderrob21

OL help is overstating it. Every position is set except for RG, and there are some candidates on the roster.

As for QB, what would you like the 49ers to do? We went after Manning, and it’s not like we could just go and draft Luck.

Alex Smith took us to the NFCCG. WR was a position where depth could be improved. RB wasn’t necessary, but returner will be very soon.

How did you enjoy sitting out the first two rounds?

  40. malbosia says: Apr 28, 2012 12:48 AM

I figured the Niners would take a RB but not James. I was hoping for Doug Martin but I think James will make an instant impact. RB is the least durable position in the league. You need to be deep at the position especially with the Niners offensive style. Besides running the ball he can catch passes out of the backfield and return punts. I love Gore but he is starting to decline. James isn’t very tall but he has decent bulk and is shifty. Hopefully he can take over for Frank next year.

  41. macklinr61 says: Apr 28, 2012 1:00 AM

Who can block and pass protect better? Hunter or LMJ? That will be key. I like how Niners will be spreading the field from side to side with all this speed. It will free up the middle for Vernon and Delanie and whoever wins the slot position. Nice!

  42. randomcommenter says: Apr 28, 2012 1:52 AM

Why are the 49ers making luxury picks? You mean they’re so good they can draft role players with top picks?

Harbaugh is lucky that he inherited a team with a strong core, but that core won’t stay strong if you keep drafting role players.

Just look at how the Jets have fallen apart the last few years. They thought they wre just a few guys away from the Super Bowl too and they made moves to add the final pieces. Look at them now, back to mediocre.

  43. biggie900 says: Apr 28, 2012 3:54 AM

Ho hum…shouldn’t you go hide in some (black) hole? What do the Faders have. No 1st round pick and declining Palmer as a QB.

    Now GTFO.

This is a good pick for the niners..i see alot of screens to this kid since smith isnt really a slinger down the field type…looks like to me that gm/coach are doin well to try and get some playmakers on offense..week 2 will be fun.

  47. franknunley57 says: Apr 28, 2012 2:36 PM

    ‘mixa:

Sproles was a 4th round pick…130th overall. I’ll bet you didn’t even know who LMJ was before the 9ers picked him.
