Mohamed Sanu got an unpleasant phone call during the first round

There’s a good chance that Rutgers wide receiver Mohamed Sanu will be off the board by the end of Friday night, but for a brief moment he thought he was a first-round draft pick.

Sanu was watching the draft with his family on Thursday night when his phone rang. The Bengals were on the clock for the 27th pick, and the voice on the phone said that he was from the Bengals and that they would be selecting Sanu. As you might imagine, Sanu’s draft party exploded in joy that stopped just long enough for them to watch Roger Goodell announce the pick.

Which was Kevin Zeitler, an offensive lineman from Wisconsin.

“This is a great kid, I guarantee you, and someone played a cruel joke on him,” Sanu’s agent Mike McCartney, who tweeted that Sanu would be a Bengal before the true pick was known, told Peter King of SI.com. “It is unreal that someone would do that, but it happened.”

Per McCartney, Sanu’s in good spirits despite the prank and excited to join a team that does want him. He’s probably going to be asking for a little more background information from callers on Friday night, though.

  3. The Prophet says: Apr 27, 2012 11:25 AM

Yeah, that’s messed up. Maybe an ex-girlfriend had a guy call him to do that or something …

  4. garyman1 says: Apr 27, 2012 11:25 AM

Why would Tim Tebow go ahead and pull a prank like that ?

  5. dldove77 says: Apr 27, 2012 11:25 AM

That’s karma for the agent leaking the pick before it was announced.

  6. touchdowndances says: Apr 27, 2012 11:25 AM

That’s just plain horrible. This isn’t a long-term serious issue, but it sure spoiled a night that is supposed to be special for so many of these guys. Just completely uncalled for.

  7. cooklynn17 says: Apr 27, 2012 11:26 AM

People need to grow up, this is not a situation to be playing jokes on people, the line needs to be drawn somewhere.

  8. bucwild05 says: Apr 27, 2012 11:27 AM

I’d be happy that I wasn’t a Bengal. Count your blessings. You’re going to be in the NFL, and you’ll be off the board tonight with a team other than the Bengals. Be happy!

Maybe you should have stopped yourself from all the embarassment by not TWEETING the pick before the announcement, you know, like what Goodell reminded people from doing…..

Great kid, super versatile, recruited as a safety, converted to WR, ran the wildcat couple years ago and returns kicks/punts, what else can you ask from him. Hope he lands in a good situation, all the best to him, maybe Greg Schiano will pick him up.

  29. dcryan82 says: Apr 27, 2012 11:43 AM

Dang, that’s messed up. Talk about pullin on your heart strings.

  30. gmen4life33 says: Apr 27, 2012 11:43 AM

damn thats messed up. This kid has the talent to be the steal o the draft at WR, and might be available in the 3rd! Reminds me soo much of Hakeem Nicks. Hopefully the Giants snatch him if hes there at the bottom of the 2nd, even thought he shouldnt be

  31. fxws says: Apr 27, 2012 11:43 AM

    Wow, how low class.

Future draftees should borrow a cellphone for the draft and call the teams to give them their number, that should help avoid those situations.

  32. sportsfuhnatic says: Apr 27, 2012 11:44 AM

Who says it was the Bengals or even anyone from the NFL for that matter?

It could’ve been someone from a rival school, he torched, playing a joke on him.

    Couldn’t that be a possibility?

  33. pigskin28 says: Apr 27, 2012 11:44 AM

Good!! They should do that to every single one of you all so you can let the draft take it’s course and stop looking attention, you egomaniacs.

as a bengals fan i have to say i dont appreciate the douche bag posing as a bengals rep and making the organization look bad. and if it was in fact the bengals ” which i dont think it is’ then thats BS. but i dont think that were a shady franchise like the browns with colt mccolt saying hes the starter then drafting weeden and the next day hes on the block.

  40. Bryant Dean says: Apr 27, 2012 12:12 PM

The worst part for Sanu was that he was already trying to get in the team spirit and punched his girlfriend.

  41. pdxpanther says: Apr 27, 2012 12:14 PM

They should put a camera in his house for when he is picked, and have him wear a “U Mad Bro?” shirt to show that a$$ who’s getting the last laugh.

It’s way too late for that, morgan, WAY too late.

  48. Deb says: Apr 27, 2012 12:24 PM

Pulp Fiction was harsh but hilarious. This is screwing around with a kid’s head. Not funny. The league should issue codes so players know the team is on the line. And Sanu needs an agent who doesn’t squeal and run to Twitter like a teenager.

  49. exhibits5 says: Apr 27, 2012 12:26 PM

  50. chicagoboss says: Apr 27, 2012 12:26 PM

  51. dolphindad says: Apr 27, 2012 12:27 PM

why does everyone feel bad for him. he was probably super happy when he found out it was not a real call. kinda like having a near death experience but escaping unharmed. he can have a new appreciation for life now and his new team.

  52. jluns275 says: Apr 27, 2012 12:28 PM

Tough joke, but at least he dodged a bullet by not really being picked by the Bengals.
Come to think of it, I’m not sure he’s even elligible for selection by the Bengals….
I’ve not heard of any failed UA’s or felony convictions on his record. He’s not on probation or house arrest for anything is he?

  54. RexCanCoach says: Apr 27, 2012 12:29 PM

  55. abqpacker says: Apr 27, 2012 12:29 PM

Do we have any proof of this? Is it possible that the agent made this story up to cover his own butt in regards to his premature tweet?

  56. indywilson40 says: Apr 27, 2012 12:31 PM

Probably the Jerky Boys. Those guys are cold hearted.

  62. uwsptke says: Apr 27, 2012 12:55 PM

Could be worse. The Bears front office once called the agent for a draft pick (James Starks) and told them they were taking Starks. Then the GM walks in and says he changed his mind and turned in the draft card for some QB that never even made the team. Things ended up working out OK for him though, as he won a ring with the Packers in his rookie year.

  63. humbleminded85 says: Apr 27, 2012 1:06 PM

  67. realskipbayless says: Apr 27, 2012 1:55 PM

This was def funny but what’s even more funny was I saw a bucs fan and a dolphins fan talking smack about the bengals. Neither of your team were relevent last year and won’t be next year or the year after. Atleast the bengals are in the right direction. Dalton all he does is win!!!

  68. neauxgeaux44 says: Apr 27, 2012 2:15 PM

Sanu would be lucky to be a Bengal or for any NFL team of that matter. The league is a privilege..

Yeah.. man it would suck having Andy Dalton throwing to you, with
Gresham and Green preventing you from being double covered.

Yeah… what a horrible life that would be. Making fools money for a kids game.

Too many kids on this board. I vote for an age check.

  73. cjepp says: Apr 27, 2012 3:40 PM

#1. If I was being drafted. I would probably purchase an extra line just for this day to make sure this didn’t happen.

#2. Who’s saying it wasn’t the Bengals who quickly changed their minds at the last minute are we’re too chicken to call him back?

  74. nflofficeadmin says: Apr 27, 2012 3:41 PM

I can’t believe people find this funny. I’m pretty damned irreverent, but this just ain’t right. This is a kid…hopefully one of the most memorable nights of his life…and most significant as well…it’s plain wrong to mess with thenkid’s head like that. As they say…there’s a special place in hell…

  76. waltdawg says: Apr 27, 2012 4:44 PM

They did take him … in the third :)

  79. ceadderman says: Apr 28, 2012 7:50 AM

Nobody pranked the kid. He was on Natti’s board the whole time. Someone just fudged in the War Room and called the wrong guy. They got him anyway didn’t they. Funny how nobody is picking up on this.

You’re pranked if the team that “called” you doesn’t have you on their board. You aren’t pranked if they get you in the draft regardless of where they get you. Someone just called the wrong number. You can bet Sanu is gonna get hazed about this mercilessly. Dude is gonna have a pile of cheap throwaway phones in his locker 1st day of camp. :D lol

  80. ceadderman says: Apr 28, 2012 8:01 AM

“he was one of 26 ppl invited to NY for the draft…”
    __________________________________

Uhhhh yeah no. Sorry didn’t happen like that. I’m sure the kid is cool an all but he was not invited to Radio City Music Hall. He wasn’t even considered a 2nd round or better talent which those seats are reserved for players of that level of talent. The Green Room only had ONE guy in it midway through the first 2 days. Man how that must suck. Still he was one of the 26 invited. ;)

  81. lionsdetroitcom says: May 5, 2012 12:19 PM
