RG3 says Redskins would have made him No. 1 overall pick

2012 NFL Draft - First Round Getty Images

Of the 26 players who arrived at the green room at Radio City Music Hall, 20 heard their names called in the first round of the 2012 draft.

Of those 20, more than half visited backstage with a certain Internet hack with whom you may be familiar.

Here’s the interview with Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, who said the Redskins told him that Griffin would have been the first overall pick in the draft, if the Redskins had held that pick.

Griffin also said that he’ll need plenty of tickets when he returns home to Dallas on Thanksgiving to play the Cowboys.

Saying “RG3 says Redskins would have made him No. 1 overall pick” isn’t the same as saying “the Redskins told him that Griffin would have been the first overall pick in the draft”.

But the folks here will rag on RG3 anyway.

  7. djstat says: Apr 27, 2012 12:44 AM

Now that your a Redskin I hate you. Hence fourth you are known as Jamarcus Leaf!!

    Go giants

  9. heavywoody says: Apr 27, 2012 12:48 AM

RGIII needs to get over himself. First he hurt the Colts feelings, and now he would have been the #1 pick regardless. If that were true why did the Redskins say they tried to move up to #1, when they already knew the Colts would take Andrew Luck??

He has bust written all over him.

  10. skinsfan1981 says: Apr 27, 2012 12:52 AM

Ah all the haters as usual in the PFT comment section. Truth be told, I would’ve taken RG3 w the first pick too, just not a Luck fan.

  11. armchairqb says: Apr 27, 2012 12:56 AM

OK, can we get a moratorium on RG3 stories from now until at least late August. This guy has to be the most overhyped rookie since … well, last April. OK, you’ve got me there, but please … NO MORE RG3 UNTIL HE DOES SOMETHING!!!

  12. cclaser says: Apr 27, 2012 12:58 AM

Not a chance. Suck for Griffin is not catchy enough.

I think many teams had him higher than Luck. We’ll see what happens. BTW, I hear he scored better than the last four Cowboys picks combined on the Wonderlic.

  20. cosanostra71 says: Apr 27, 2012 1:08 AM

I like him. Seems like he’s down to earth too. Even though I don’t like the Redskins I hope he does well, he’s exciting to watch. So is Luck. Should be fun watching these guys grow in the NFL.

  21. commonsensedude says: Apr 27, 2012 1:08 AM

Well, I think all he did was answer a direct question from Florio.

So much petty jealousy from a couple of folks here. If we beat you Giants when Rex Grossman was the quarterback, what do you think will happen now that our quarterback is much more accurate and five times as fast? All the fake injuries in the world won’t keep you guys from getting swept by us again. HTTR!

  22. coltsluckdynasty says: Apr 27, 2012 1:10 AM

Good thing is, Ryan leaf said that San Diego would have made him the first pick too… This guy is as self righteous as it gets.. Get over yourself already buddy… Lucks flip phone is as modest as it gets. He doesn’t care about what people think, he just wants to play ball. While RG3 is worried about ticket sales in Dallas… You need to get over yourself already… And quit using the motor oil in your hair.. It’s supposed to run engines, not for fashion

  23. coderacer says: Apr 27, 2012 1:11 AM

He didn’t exactly ‘say’ that…I think his words are being slightly misconstrued…which is right up Florio’s alley of course. Makes for a an interesting headline….seriously, watch the video guys.

  24. mschurm1 says: Apr 27, 2012 1:24 AM

This is obviously important to him. He seems a little more sensitive than you’d like.

  25. sports_dude says: Apr 27, 2012 1:24 AM

Glad I did, well spoken kid. If he plays as well as he speaks the Skins are going to be very good. Some around here seem to think that matters a lot, we’ll see.

The headline and wording of the article seem fine to me though. Anyone who wants to rip him will anyway.

  29. tonythenose says: Apr 27, 2012 2:18 AM

…and the Colts told Luck that if they had the 2nd pick they would have still taken him

  30. trojan33sc says: Apr 27, 2012 2:18 AM

RGIII is showing that he’s still slighted by the Colts complete focus on Luck prior to the draft. Take your medicine like a man ( and millions) , post the draft order to your wall and simply “Go Off” like Cam Newton did on a mission to show the Colts they were Wrong !!!

  31. turbo2728 says: Apr 27, 2012 2:36 AM

Well they would hardly say that they would pick Luck instead…

  32. folkcrusader says: Apr 27, 2012 2:39 AM

There is only two rules you need remember Mr. 3

#1 Lose and they will blame you.

#2 Win and they will love you.

Everything else is someone trying to sell you something.

  33. JustinD says: Apr 27, 2012 3:01 AM

I don’t buy the RG III hype train at all. He’s not bad but he’s not top 5 material in my book. This is a weak draft overall, it reminds me of 2005 or 2008. Most of these first rounders are there by default and RG falls into the second pick because of that too. What were they supposed to say RG? Sorry but you are a 6 to 10 pick to me, just be happy you got where you are and shut up.

  34. trollaikman8 says: Apr 27, 2012 3:27 AM

    Loved the Native American socks.

  35. wayne1693 says: Apr 27, 2012 3:41 AM

It absolutely astounds me that RG3 is still talking about this #1 and #2 thing! He’s been obsessing over it for months, as if it was something that intelligent fans and commentators really cared about. Yes, [almost] everyone seems to love him, and he was the most exciting college player this past season…but I swear a few of his synapses are mis-firing. What makes his focus on this issue even more crazy, is the fact that many of the smart commentators have pointed out how LUCKY he is to have been picked #2…because his probability of success is much greater [right now] with the Redskins. Imagine being back at your high-school dance, and the ugly girl is awarded first choice of a partner, and she picks your best friend. Second choice goes to the wild-&-crazy cute girl, and she picks you. Unless you happen to be smoking crack at the time, I don’t think you’re complaining about your friend being chosen before you.

  36. msclemons67 says: Apr 27, 2012 4:35 AM

I really like both Luck and RGIII and I think they both went to the right team.

Luck is a bit more pro-ready and will handle the chaos of being on an expansion team. I think he’ll do great.

RGIII looks like a young Steve Young and we all saw how Young did in Shanahan’s offense. If the Redskins had the #1 pick I really believe they would have chosen RGIII. He’s a better fit for Shanahan.

  37. evomike06 says: Apr 27, 2012 5:29 AM

I love seeing the haters of RGIII just because he got drafted by the skins. I hope he shuts everyone up this year and in the future. Must be sower browns fans pissed because they still missed out on him.

  38. jenniferxxx says: Apr 27, 2012 5:33 AM

He needs to let that jealousy thing go. He’s rich … famous … and will retire in his 30’s to a life of leisure. He’ll probably marry a ‘supermodel’. There are 6,000,000,000 people on the planet who wish they were him.

Let that be enough for you RG3 … and stop crying.

  42. vonhugen says: Apr 27, 2012 6:59 AM

I’m right there with coderacer on this one. It doesn’t appear that any of you jokers actually watched the video. I’m also guessing that the majority of you are Eagles/Cowboys/Giants fans. I love how all of you guys get so wrapped up in what the Redskins do. If you want to compare him to Luck then look at their numbers from last year:

    Luck – Pass 3517, PCT 71.3, TDs 37, INT 10, Rushing 43 attempts for 153 yards/2 TDs

    RG3 – Pass 4293, PCT 72.4, TDs 37, INT 6, Rushing 161 attempts for 644 yards/9 TDs

Their career numbers are almost identical as well, however, this won’t do anything for some of you Redskins haters. I’m so glad we got RG3 instead of Luck and I think most of you will be eating your words down the line. Hail!

  43. metalhead65 says: Apr 27, 2012 7:02 AM

you did not fit the scheme the colts plan on running so they did not pick you get over it! you are going to a team much more ready to compete than the colts are so please do not let any success you have right away go to your already swollen head. and here is a little news flash for you,had luck come out last year the panthers would have taken him #1 instead of cam newton. I am getting tired of hearing what a great young man he is then listening to him downgrade luck and talk about how he should have been the #1 pick.

  44. httr73 says: Apr 27, 2012 7:31 AM

For all of you trying to manufacture a reason to not like this guy, let it go. If you watch the video, he was specifically asked if he was told the Skins would have made him the number one pick and he answered the question. Was the question asked to be able to generate this headline and increase page views? You bet. If you want to not like the guy because he plays for the Skins, that’s fine….just say so. I have a lot of respect for @djstat for saying he just doesn’t like him becuase he now plays for the Skins and he is a Giants fan. I don’t like JPP…seems like a great guy but he plays for an East rival.

  45. qdeathstar says: Apr 27, 2012 7:37 AM

As a redskin fan the comments he’s made make mego ugh. He is over confident, he ain’t done nothing yet, he. Needs to shut his trap and get to work

  46. geemoney713 says: Apr 27, 2012 7:37 AM

It’s fairly clear that most of the commenters didn’t watch the video. He did not say that, AT all, especially since he was lead into the answer by Florio.

RG3 only said he got the feeling that the Redskins wanted him no matter what. His words are definitely twisted by this article.

I feel like all his answers were flawless and lacked any ounce of conceitedness.

  47. indywilson40 says: Apr 27, 2012 7:38 AM

Here is the complete list of teams that would have taken RG3 with the #1 pick:

  48. crazycane says: Apr 27, 2012 7:39 AM

You believe what you wanna hear even though it isn’t true.

  49. indywilson40 says: Apr 27, 2012 7:42 AM

Vonhugen, based on your logic, Case Keenum should have been the #1 pick. Big 12 quarterbacks have inflated numbers every year and almost all of them are bust in the NFL. Fact.

  50. dikshuttle says: Apr 27, 2012 7:52 AM

As a Skins’ fan, I’m really happy to hear all the H8rAide being spilt.

Both players are boatloads of potential and nothing else. We don’t know how either of them will perform and can just marvel at the talent.

    They’ll both make mistakes.

I think we can all agree that RG3 is walking onto a better squad, however. …. provided they don’t shoot themselves in the foot… AGAIN…

  51. indycoltsfan2012 says: Apr 27, 2012 7:53 AM

Yes, I would take every word that Mike Shanahan says as gold. lol I think we might see RG3 sitting on the bench mid year when he isn’t producing the #’s.

Sounds like Redskin fans after you guys drafted Heath Shuler. Congratulations on the pick. I for one am looking forward to see a Mike Vick clone bring some excitement back to Washington. It’s been pretty boring the last couple decades.

Draft was yesterday – time to move on.

RGIII may have a better team around him than Luck but he has more work to do to be ready.

He’s no longer the best athlete on the field. He needs to learn to read defenses and play a pro offense.

People want to compare his numbers to Luck – well he played 5 of the bottom 25 defenses in all of NCAA football last year. Remember that, he’s now going against defenses that are better than ANY he’s ever seen.

Wanna look skinny? Hang out with fat people.

Wanna look like a stud QB? Play bad defenses.

  58. abninf says: Apr 27, 2012 9:32 AM

Unfortunately for RGIII it’s a team game, and his team has been irrelevant for 20 years.

That’s actually pretty funny, however, I was just trying to show that they’re really not far apart numbers-wise. I also don’t understand why everyone is hating on this kid. It’s not like he’s calling press conferences to talk about himself. He’s got every yahoo from all the major media outlets shoving mic’s in his face. He’s just a kid and very humble one at that. He also exudes confidence, but not in a negative way. He’s got good character, is a hard worker, comes from a good family, and has done nothing but improve each year. It’s hard for us Skins fans not to be excited after all of the BS we’ve been through the last 20 years.

I’m making a bold prediction that we go undefeated and beat the Raiders 142 – 0 in the SB. Shabadoo!

  62. jvibottomline says: Apr 27, 2012 10:02 AM

I’m sure the Redskins will have the distinction for the first over all pick in 2013 the way they play anymore.

  65. brooksy04 says: Apr 27, 2012 6:11 PM

Did the majority of you actually even watch the interview? He was asked a question on whether the Skins would have taken him at number 1 and he answered it that the Skins told him they would have. He himself didn’t bring it up. Soooo many people hating on the guy, just don’t understand it.

  66. tlaw21 says: Apr 28, 2012 8:57 AM

Watch the darn interview guys they asked if the skins would have taken him at #1 and he answered the question by what he was told. What’s he supposed to do say? Geez I wish the Redskins had the first overall pick to see if I could be number one over Luck? Honestly RGIII seems to fit Shanahan’s system with the bootlegs, roll outs, and PA’s and with him being quick, accurate on the run, and can elude defenders outside of the pocket maybe the skins did want him more than Luck. We will never know the truth unless you have seen the skins draft board to see who they had rated higher. BTW it was Suck for Luck and Whiff for Griff!!!!!!!!
