Jake Long could be on the outs in Miami

Jake+Long+Buffalo+Bills+v+Miami+Dolphins+5oZsxDO5Vscl Getty Images

Five Four years ago, the Dolphins opted for a left tackle over a franchise quarterback, taking Jake Long instead of Matt Ryan with the first pick in the draft.  With the Dolphins using a first-round pick in 2012 on the player they hope will become the team’s next franchise quarterback, the Dolphins also may have acquired their next cornerstone left tackle.

Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel believes that the arrival of Jonathan Martin via round two could eventually mean the end of the line for Long.

Martin played sparingly at right tackle during his college career, and if the Dolphins decide to move on from Long, Martin could take over on the left side.

As Berardino explains it, with the Dolphins admittedly transforming their approach, Long may not fit in the new-look offense.  “We’re not going to be as much a power scheme as we’ve been in the past,” G.M. Jeff Ireland said when discussing the decision to take Martin. “So his athletic ability and . . .  quickness and ability to play in space transfers to this scheme probably a lot better than any other scheme.”

Long is due to receive a base salary $11.2 million in 2012.  Long recently proclaimed that he’s the healthiest he has been in a long time.

  8. arlingtonsynn says: Apr 28, 2012 1:35 PM

    Are you kidding me?

Long is a top 5 LT. Miami’s QBs sucked because they lacked talent not because they lacked time to throw.

This is sounded a bit too much like the plot of Major League the movie.

  9. pnut87 says: Apr 28, 2012 1:35 PM

Wait… what? last i checked, Jake Long was a damn good tackle. why would you voluntarily get rid of him?

  10. dawkinseffect says: Apr 28, 2012 1:36 PM

Long is a top 5 tackle in the NFL today, are you kidding me he doesn’t fit your scheme!?!?! anyteam would love to have him…wow dolphins, keep up the great work.

Eagles are willing to trade Mike Kafka for a 2nd rounder. we promise he is better then AJ Feeley

  12. JaminJake says: Apr 28, 2012 1:36 PM

They should trade him for a 1st and 2nd. They could probably get two 1sts if they find the right team.

  17. 4evrnyt says: Apr 28, 2012 1:40 PM

It is truly shocking to see just how bad and apparently incompetent the Dolphins front office appears to be.

Dolphins fans unfortunately need to flex their power by not buying tickets. Once the stadium is empty the league will step in and force Ross to sell regardless of how recently he purchased it. If you simply have no business running a team like this ownership group is showing then do the right thing and sell it to someone who does. The fans deserve it. And if Ross cant do the right thing then the league needs to act on behalf of the fans and get him the F out!

  18. birdzflyinhigh says: Apr 28, 2012 1:41 PM

If this is true then Ireland will ruin what has been a great draft so far for the fins. They have made picks to put Tannehill in position to succeed when he is ready to come in-as long as they keep Long. Ireland must really like to be hated…

  19. dolfan34 says: Apr 28, 2012 1:42 PM

Sometimes you’ll just make up any crap to take a shot at the Dolphins, Florio. Long has a contract for this year and could be franchised next year if necessary. Shouldn’t we wait to see if Martin is even able to play in the NFL first before we start talking about potential LT’s leaving the team?

  26. backindasaddle says: Apr 28, 2012 1:44 PM

This sounds absolutely retarded to me. Long is a franchise left tackle. It’s an extremely important position and Long is as solid as they get. Why are they drafting a replacement for him when they have other blatantly obvious needs? They also made a huge stretch for Tannenhill. Massive risk and a likely bust. They should have just recognized that a franchise QB was not in the cards for this draft and taken the best available player or chosen for another positional need. I think this guy Ireland either has ADD or is otherwise just a plain old conventional idiot. No wonder the FA QB’s didn’t want to go to Miami. The organization is being run by an idiot.

  27. dumptrucked says: Apr 28, 2012 1:45 PM

Sure why not move on from a top 5 tackle that is a proven commodity for a toss up draftee… God Stephen Ross has proven to be the worst owner in the NFL surpassing Redskins guy.

  28. devinmr711 says: Apr 28, 2012 1:45 PM

Release him. Skins sign him. Move Trent Williams to RT.

  29. stlrams39 says: Apr 28, 2012 1:47 PM

    This article is stupid.

I think the Redskins are moving on from RG3 since they drafted a QB in the 3rd round

  30. krazytrane says: Apr 28, 2012 1:48 PM

Are they really in a position to drop top talent? Find a way to use his skills and be closer to a decent team as opposed to dropping him in the hopes that some lesser talent would be successful in your new offense.

  31. exibitsman says: Apr 28, 2012 1:49 PM

I think Jake’s long will end up with the jets. his old coach Tony saprano’s is the jets off coordinator

  32. cannonballdookie says: Apr 28, 2012 1:49 PM

Doesn’t make sense, isn’t he their best player? But this is the Miami Dolphins we’re talking about where nothing they do ever makes sense.

  33. marcinhouston says: Apr 28, 2012 1:50 PM

They made a good choice to pass on Ryan. He may win in the regular season except against his main division rivals, but he is not a leader and could not score in the playoffs with 4 pro-bowl caliber weapons at his disposal.

  34. raiderinva says: Apr 28, 2012 1:50 PM

There is no way the Fins let Long go. If he does not fit into the future plans or is too expensive to keep either redo the contract or trade him.

He would be an upgrade on about 25 teams, so if a trade can’t be worked out it’s no wonder they lost out on Harbaugh, Manning, and Flynn.

  35. ryanclark25 says: Apr 28, 2012 1:51 PM

Possibly the worst article I’ve read on pft. Based on one person telling a reporter we are changing our scheme you have concluded the franchise elite left tackle is going to somehow fit out of place after they just drafted their potential franchise quarterback. Of course the notion that they drafted a well touted but unproven at NFL level tackle to give the new quarterback better protection on the right side after marc Colombo I think it was, giving one of the most secure bookend pairings in the league so he doesn’t become David Carr would be entirely ridiculous, why on earth would that be the reason for drafting martin. Jake long on way out…Sweet jes*s Florio.

That aside I do love pft so other than the odd article like this, keep them coming.

  36. jluns275 says: Apr 28, 2012 1:54 PM

You just can’t make this Dolphins stuff up. At some point you have to begin to wonder exactly what the endgame is here for Ross.
    Ok, conspiracy theory time:
Is it even remotely possible that Ross is counting on Ireland’s incompetence to drive down Dolphins attendance & turn outraged frustration into melancholy indifference to such a point that he could explore moving the team?
    Unlikely, I would hope.
But seriously, what the heck can he be thinking?

The very nature of the comments caused me to re-read the PFT plant. On careful reading, it is Florio and Bernadino who created the stir, not Ireland. Just another article to create responses, the lifeblood of PFT.

Picks L Smith and J Martin are depth, and to reload should Long & Reggie Bush leave via fre agency next year.

The Steelers do this all the time, you have to prepare for these things….

  47. grandpoopah says: Apr 28, 2012 2:08 PM

Cleveland gives up 3 picks to move up one spot to take a running back 3rd overall. The Jags spend a 3rd round pick on a punter. And now the Dolphins are thinking of dumping their best player, who happens to play what is arguably the 2nd most important postion in football. It’s not hard to see why some teams are perennial bottom feeders.

  48. targabill says: Apr 28, 2012 2:08 PM

You all are crazy. Martin is going to be the starting RT and Long will be the LT for a long time. Long, Pouncey & Martin are the nucleus for a very strong O line.

  49. agelardi says: Apr 28, 2012 2:10 PM

  51. dkeyser says: Apr 28, 2012 2:13 PM

Well he seems to have a great deal of talent, so i guess it does make sense to trade him. I mean after all they seem to be getting rid of anybody who has shown any ability to play the game of football at an above average level.

  52. marc127 says: Apr 28, 2012 2:17 PM

As a Bears fan this would be amazing to get a legit left tackle. They all ready dealt for Brandon Marshall, so get on the phone and offer Hester and a draft pick or two and see what happens.

  53. rickc402 says: Apr 28, 2012 2:18 PM

Please do and find your way to DC Mr. Long.

  54. hendeeze says: Apr 28, 2012 2:22 PM

Replacing Long with Kwame Harris 2.0. Ireland at his best!!! (Oh wait that was drafting Tannehill and hiring his twice previously fired head coach)

  55. Nick says: Apr 28, 2012 2:25 PM

It’s not a knock on Jake Long, rather his price tag. Having an elite LT is a LUXURY and there’s really not a ton to protect back there. Meanwhile, Martin is going to make 6 mil over the length of his rookie contract… THAT’S HALF OF WHAT JAKE WILL MAKE NEXT YEAR. Plus, Wake needs to get paid and this is Sean Smiths last year on his rookie contract, money’s got to come from somewhere.

  56. orangeaqua says: Apr 28, 2012 2:25 PM

Martin was drafted to be a right tackle. What this story left out was that Long could be out next season if he gets hurt again cause his contract would be expired. Then Martin could be moved to the left side. Long will be a Dolphin this season.

  57. handsatlanta says: Apr 28, 2012 2:27 PM

From a Dolphins season ticket holder {that would be me}: the problem isn’t whether Jake Long is a stud or a Pro Bowler or an eventual Hall of Famer. The problem is that can you really afford to have your left tackle as the highest paid player on the team?

Forget about that stuff about the Dolphins moving away from a power game to an athletic, more mobile game. Long is perfectly capable of doing that. He’s got quick moves and good feet. The question is, can Jonathan Martin adequately replace him? Keep in mind that Martin’s 4 year contract IN TOTAL will be less than 1/2 of what Long earns this year alone. Could a team, even one as managerially inept as the Dolphins, become better by spreading that money elsewhere?

After several years of wanting Ireland gone, I’m having second thoughts. He shows signs — not many but some — of being a decent GM. If he gets Cameron Wake re-signed and this year’s draftees play out well {I’m not confident but that’s a post for another day} then if he chooses to move Long out I’d be OK with it if it gives him the flexibility to make the team better.

  58. Stiller43 says: Apr 28, 2012 2:29 PM

Close to every other team in the league will be there to snap him up.

    Would be a dumb move.

  59. crawpappa says: Apr 28, 2012 2:29 PM

Wow, hard to believe how many of you are so gullible to believe a clearly manufactured story this is by PFT. It doesn’t matter to them if the story is a fabrication, they just know any story about Miami will bring out the haters and the not so intellectually challenged and frankly and sadly, they’ve achieved their goal.

  60. jerrycola says: Apr 28, 2012 2:31 PM

The headline of this article should be “Jeff Ireland could be on the outs in Miami”.

  61. noahbird says: Apr 28, 2012 2:39 PM

  62. nflfollower says: Apr 28, 2012 2:40 PM

What is wrong with the fools on this blog, this was a article by a sports reporter ruining his mouth, the Dolphins has said nothing about this, Long as any player can be cut or traded, they are looking for fast O line men, don’t worry about Jake Long, and stop reacting to every talking head, if the experts are so good then how could they miss on Tom Brady, Bill waited for the 7th round, why, because he miss the call, it happens a lot in this league, experts make very good calls, and some time they miss bad. Bill

  69. shrimpking55 says: Apr 28, 2012 3:11 PM

    MIKE FLORIO
You must be the anti-Dolphins…..Why would the dolphins replace Jake Long, the only Pro Bowler on our team? A team player, a guy who doesn’t give any off the field problems. He is a top 5 Tackle in the league. Long has not been on the field with this new system and for you to say that Jonathan Martin was drafted to replace him has to be the most IDIOTIC statement that I have read. The more and more I read you, the less credible I think you are. Lately you have been making alot of those.
Jonathan Martin was a LT at Stanford but analyst predict that his game is better suited for RT. C’mon get it together!

  70. lostsok says: Apr 28, 2012 3:13 PM

Considering Ireland just said he could fit “any team and any system” I don’t think Miami is planning to move Jake Long. He ain’t goin’ nowhere.

  71. bobbyd12 says: Apr 28, 2012 3:20 PM

Mike Beradino has about as much inside info on the Dolphins as the manager of the Marlins, which is zero to none. Beradino would be better off on reporting on Harry Potter with all the fanatasies he makes up in his mind. Not a reliable source for Dolphin Football.

  73. 69finfan says: Apr 28, 2012 3:30 PM

People, there are no facts to back this story up. Relax and simmer down now. If Florio stated that the Earth was flat would you believe him? How about if he told you the Sun was going to come up in the West? Maybe this will in fact come to fruition, maybe it won’t but either way there is nothing that anybody can do about it. Martin hasn’t even made the team yet and Florio has many of you already believing that Jake Long will be ousted. Get a hold of yourselves. You’re coming unglued.

  76. realfootballfan says: Apr 28, 2012 3:34 PM

This is exactly why the Dolphins are losers and will continue to be under Jeff Ireland as long as he holds this job.

Long is easily their best player and one of the best offensive linemen in football. If or when he’s cut loose, this will be the Willie Roaf situation from a decade ago all over again. Hall of Fame type LT’s rarely ever hit the market, but this would be one of the few times.

Furthermore, if you’re a Dolphin fan, aren’t you asking why didn’t your clueless GM package Long and some combination of picks to trade up for the coveted Griffin, which I’m sure would have made the Rams at least think about it because Long would have given Sam Bradford a Orlando Pacelike protector for the next decade.

Not to mention that they had Brandon Marshall too right after the season to shop if they truly were thinking of going in that direction. I think Long, Marshall, (both players they apparently didn’t want from the outset of the new coaching regime) and a couple of first and 2nd rounders trump anything the Redskins had to offer but that just makes too much sense.

  77. jc327 says: Apr 28, 2012 3:35 PM

  78. oldchap85 says: Apr 28, 2012 3:35 PM

this has to be the dumbest article. if you actually watched the Dolphins at all last year, you would have seen that the right side of the line was atrocious and the pick of Martin was for RT. Also our RT of last year (Colombo) is retired. Philbin is an O-Line guy. he of all people knows that jake long will fit any system. there is absolutely 0% chance of them getting rid of Jake Long.

  80. geeforcer says: Apr 28, 2012 3:54 PM

boy oh boy, no way this could be true. are you saying the dolphins would get rid of one of the best lt`s in the league just when they grab their “franchise qb”? if this is true then the dolphins F.O is insane.

  95. finsfrenzy says: Apr 28, 2012 5:51 PM

This is a misleading article, Ireland has already said the Martin is going to play RT, makes no sense to get rid of Long. Maybe next year, but not this year

  96. ericn42000 says: Apr 28, 2012 5:53 PM

Jeff Ireland sucks as a GM

  97. annes22 says: Apr 28, 2012 6:22 PM

Mike Florio writes a lot of rubbish at times.
Jeff Ireland has done a good job this draft. Just
wait all you Dolphin haters, you may be surprised.
Some of you have no clue what you are talking about, and it’s pathetic reading some of this junk on
here. Worry about your own teams first.

  99. dwight123 says: Apr 28, 2012 6:25 PM

I’m not gonna lie when the Fins drafted Jake,I was the 1st to say whatttt? A LT? Now I’m eating my words..he’s my favorite player on my favorite team..this kid is such a class act..and a beast at LT! i would be utterly shocked if the let go of him ):

  100. djbasx007 says: Apr 28, 2012 6:28 PM

Once again another irresponsible, speculative report by that idiot/dolphin hater failio. How does this guy have a job?!! Go ahead and delete my post, it is what it is.

  101. evomike06 says: Apr 28, 2012 6:29 PM

If he gets traded/ or cut.. what a perfect opportunity for my redskins to make there oline much better..

  102. randomguy9999 says: Apr 28, 2012 6:33 PM

This rumor is not very likely….

However, all you “long is great” guys seemed not to notice that the phins o line was ranked 30th and long wasn’t playing that hot to say the least this year…

So, if this longshot rumor is true….whatever, time for a new guy….

  103. taintedsaints2009 says: Apr 28, 2012 6:34 PM

there has got to be a reason they are even remotely considering dumping him. it would be fantastically stupid if it’s just because of the new draft pick.

  104. billhicks666 says: Apr 28, 2012 6:48 PM

We’ll take him in Houston! We can move Duane Brown over to the right side. The Dolphins – sheesh!

  105. trubroncfan07 says: Apr 28, 2012 6:58 PM

What a stupid story, why would the Dolphins cut their best player?

  106. promickey says: Apr 28, 2012 7:34 PM

    backindasaddle says:

    ===================================
It’s more than the scheme or zone blocking that you do not understand. The Dolphins had many needs so I thought they would draft elite impact players early. They went for Tannehill instead. That said he is not a stretch and was considered by many recruiting outlets (scout.com) to be the third best QB in the draft getting a five star rating. The bottom line on Jake Long is that he is athletic enough to play any scheme in the NFL and is under contract. He could be franchised next season. All of this is chatter about nothing because the Dolphins needed to replace the right side of the line big time. So drafting the very athletic Jonathan Martin simply fills that dire need. Just for your information backindasaddle Ireland had an excellent draft but only playing the game will indicate that to everyone including Mike Florio.

  107. dolphan099 says: Apr 28, 2012 8:07 PM

This site is starting to really piss me off with all these stupid statements about the Dolphins. Martin was drafted to fix a large void at right tackle that we have had for a very long time!!!

  108. phinfan says: Apr 28, 2012 8:09 PM

Ireland has a problem keeping vets on our team. F ireland if he lets Long walk!

  109. Scott says: Apr 28, 2012 8:20 PM

I’m quite certain that anyone who believes this CRAP from Florio should give themselves a gigantic slap in the face. The Dolphins need an OT because they don’t have one for the right side. They draft a guy who many believe will make a fine right tackle. Jake Long will be needing a new contract after next season. Certainly (in Florio’s eyes) that must mean the Dolphins will cut the best player in their roster. C’mon everyone…Florio is once again trying to make the Fins front office look worse than they already do. There is no way in hell the Fins cut Jake Long. Now if some team were to offer 2 1sts for him, I am sure the Dolphin fan base would show some interest.

  110. silvernblak says: Apr 28, 2012 9:25 PM

Jeff Ireland: “I’d like to clear the air on an article,” Ireland said. “I don’t normally go overboard on media speculation. But last night I saw an article about Jake Long. I have plans to keep Jake Long here for a long time. So, let’s don’t get ahead of ourselves. …We drafted Jonathan Martin to be a tackle on this football team, a right tackle on this football team. Let’s don’t speculate any further than that.”

Sorry for the fantasies; fans of others teams… blame Florio.

  112. phishead1313 says: Apr 28, 2012 9:55 PM

WOW, my comment earlier calling out Florio was deleted. I guess the Gutless Turd can’t handle the criticism. Here’s Irelands comments from today..“I’d like to clear the air on an article,” Ireland said. The originator of this malicious gossip was none other than Bernardino, Sun-Sentinel sports writer and Jets fan that makes a habit to write against the fins to appeal to all the NY losers that moved to South Florida.

In fairness to Follo, he just more or less repeated the story, probably to suck up to the Jets’ loser fans.

  114. igotgamenj says: Apr 28, 2012 10:12 PM

The Miami Dolphins’ general manager began by addressing star left tackle Jake Long regarding an article in Saturday’s Sun Sentinel titled, “How much longer will Jake Long be a Miami Dolphin?”

“I’d like to clear the air on an article,” Ireland said. 115. Scott says: Apr 28, 2012 10:37 PM

Who’s the “stoopid” Raiders fan that said Long’s dad played for the Raiduhs? Uh, never mind.

  116. scyankee9999 says: Apr 28, 2012 11:08 PM

Ok while i love this website your Fins coverage is absurd
When Ireland came down to meet the media after the draft, he did something unique — he opened by shooting down a media report that drafting offensive tackle Jonathan Martin in the second round meant All-Pro left tackle Jake Long would be jettisoned in two years.

  117. billsfan1 says: Apr 28, 2012 11:11 PM

life long Michigan fan here so i always root for Long even though he is on Miami… truth is, he better be healthy this year because he has Mario Williams/ Mark ANderson, Quinton Coples and Chandler Jones this year…. assuming the two rookies play halfway decent, that is tough…

  118. spfripp says: Apr 29, 2012 12:05 AM

I read that report, I regretted reading it and was mad at myself for reading it because it came from the worse beat writer that covers the Dolphins. The whole thing was speculative and he really had nothing to support it. Frankly I am surprised it made it on here. If you put yourself in Ireland’s place would you use a unproven, 2nd rd talent to protect the blind side of the guy who you just wagered your career on?

  119. scerpico22 says: Apr 29, 2012 3:36 AM

wow…jake is going no where. all u idiots ripping management dont even understand whats going on here. ireland did a very nice job in this draft. long time coming….ireland has actually put a nice thing together. im sitting on the sidelines watching…lets see where it goea

  120. Deof Movestofca says: Apr 29, 2012 11:08 PM

Evidently, getting hits on the internet has become more important than integrity and “news” reporters are now allowed to pass speculation off as certainty (and, unfortunately, too many fans are all too willing to believe them without the slightest trace of evidence to back it up). There was the story about Naanee Legudu (sorry if I misspelled his name) being signed to replace Brandon Marshall that lacked any statement from the ‘Phins that implied any such thing. Then Ross was supposedly pressuring Ireland to pick Tannehill that refused to die despite denials by both Ross and Ireland. The rule of the day seems to be “if it makes Ross and/or Ireland look bad, it must be true”.

  121. gmen1987 says: Apr 30, 2012 2:19 PM

Hey Dolphin fans, remember you past on Matt Ryan to take an OT. And before you say that Ryan has never won a playoff game, neither has anyone that you have tried to market as a QB in many years.

As usual, Dolphins fans will show that they are the biggest tools in professional sports.

  122. drowningfinfan says: May 1, 2012 11:05 AM

Ok ok ok ok… So because a Writer BELIEVES that a draft pick spells the end of our premiere Left tackle We as readers just ASSume that it is Gospel and start calling the Fins Brass Idiots. I know they dont have a great track record but really guys? Try not to be that Gullable… Ireland LOVES Big Huge Guys on his team… Long is His Legacy as a GM. The only Great thing he has done so far doubt he would get rid of him.

  123. drowningfinfan says: May 1, 2012 11:08 AM

Crap I meant NOT gei rid of him…Oy Vay that didnt help my Argument much Huh?

  124. JustinD says: May 2, 2012 9:57 AM

Wow… if this has any truth to it at all, the ears in 31 other team offices just perked up. I hate the Fins and their fruity colors, but honestly Long is one of the top three LT’s in the league.

  125. detroitlionsnfl says: May 3, 2012 7:24 AM

This has to be false, it would make absolutely NO sense at all. The guy is one of the best in the league.

  126. lionsdetroitcom says: May 3, 2012 7:39 AM

I can’t believe some morons are going to blame that fact that the Dolphin’s offensive line ranked 30th in the league on the one player who was actually good on that offensive line! Amazing…. I’ll take him back home in Detroit any day! GO BLUE!
