Former basketball player Dale Moss among Packers UDFAs

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel has caught wind of the Packers’ undrafted rookie signings, and Silverstein put them in a blog post as follows:

Virginia Tech center/guard Jaymes Brooks, South Dakota State receiver Dale Moss (pictured), West Virginia tackle/guard Don Barclay, Vanderbilt safety Sean Richardson, Winston Salem State running back Nic Cooper, Tulane defensive end Dezman Moses, Southern Utah cornerback Dion Turner, USC running back Marc Tyler, Michigan Tech defensive end Drew Vanderlin, Minnesota tight end Eric Lair, San Diego State guard Tommie Draheim, Minnesota running back Duane Bennett, Wake Forest tight end Cameron Ford, and Buffalo receiver Marcus Rivers.

It has been reported that the Packers will convert Richardson, a Combine standout and workout freak, into a linebacker.

Moss, the South Dakota State receiver, will be a player to follow in Packers camp. A four-year basketball player for the Jackrabbits, Moss used his extra year of eligibility to play football. He wound up leading South Dakota State in catches, yards, and touchdowns in 2011.

Moss stands 6-foot-3, 213 and ran a 4.52 at the South Dakota Pro Day. More impressive were Moss’ explosive, 10-foot-10 broad jump, 41 1/2-inch vertical, and 4.13 short shuttle. He is an exceptional athlete.

Remember when The Vikings were criticized for signing a basketball player not too long ago?

Packers copy catting the MN Nick Taylor signing. How cute. Nick runs a 4.34 and 4.27 in his 40 testing. With our new Robinson rookie,Harvin, 2 Arkansas wrs and AD i would say we our the fastest team in the NFL,,,be afraid Pack!

However, the Vikings remain the only NFL team to sign women. I don’t think anybody will be copycatting *that*.

Ya I think the Eagles offence is probably the fastest in the league. There linemen are even 10 yards down the field when there not supposed to be lol

  12. expertop says: Apr 29, 2012 9:30 PM

I’m not a Packer fan, and this guy scares me. One year of football, and he produces like that? Sure, South Dakota State ain’t exactly USC, but still, it’s pretty impressive.

  13. truthserum4u says: Apr 29, 2012 10:30 PM

A nice flyer on a great athelete – nothing more, nothing less. Word was he wasn’t as explosive or dynamic on game tape as he was in his workout. In other words he didn’t play up to his numbers. This could be because of the lack of expierence. I was hoping the Vikings would have signed him and see if he developes. Exactly what your looking for with UDFAs.

  14. grandsonofcoach says: Apr 29, 2012 10:44 PM

Um…Taylor is only 5’9″..Moss is 6’3″. I think the comparisons can end there. Don’t care how much speed the kid has. He’s probably to short for anything other than return specialist.

Too bad none of them outside of AP can play football!

    Also:

Yeah, the Packers model their WR corps after the Vikings’. Yup.

  17. tree3383 says: Apr 30, 2012 12:12 AM

dale has a great chance to develop into a rotational wr for them. his qb for the 1st half of last season at sdsu was absolutely awful and dale still put up numbers and made plays.

  18. iheartharvin says: Apr 30, 2012 1:21 AM

This sucks. I wanted him in purple and gold. Like always the packers are 10 steps ahead of us.

  19. balr14 says: Apr 30, 2012 1:52 AM

What do you call a Vikings fan who makes really stupid remarks?

    Gifted!

  20. ctiggs says: Apr 30, 2012 2:09 AM

lol south dakota state has a pro day

  21. bagadeez04 says: Apr 30, 2012 6:11 AM

Why is the Queens organization/fans so desparate for attention from Packers fans? Like signing all the former Packers all the time. Like talking smack about unsigned free agents?

Really? 99% of these guys won’t even make a roster…when the Vikings start worrying about the Vikings and not about what the Packers thinkl they will get better. Until then…they will remain without any Super Bowls :(

  22. thepvyharvin says: Apr 30, 2012 7:55 AM

Yah,Packers are the greatest! Sure Dale Moss will play like Randy Moss did in the old days. You know, scorching the Pack for td’s all day long,,,,,ahhh the good old days!

  23. huskerguy says: Apr 30, 2012 8:24 AM

There are only 2 years the Pack fans were really worried about the Vikings in the last… uh… 20 years. And the Vikings choked both those years.

I don’t think the Pack will be emulating or copying futility.

  24. kaerous says: Apr 30, 2012 8:29 AM

Yeah…the Vikings were the first team to sign a former basketball player to an NFL roster…

    See: Gates, Antonio

  25. dragonfly99 says: Apr 30, 2012 11:30 AM

The Packers signed him based on his football skills, not on his basketball skills. Great athelete and great prospect, unfortunately he is going to a team with probably the best wide receiver corp in the NFL.

  26. elsenmidcosn says: Apr 30, 2012 1:33 PM

I’ve had the chance to cover Moss since high school. He has massive potential. Followed him step-by-step through the pre-draft process, and his improvement in route running/footwork during that time was definitely noticeable. Here’s a video from his pro day that I helped produce. http://youtu.be/qVcJR5aVtaM

  27. zn0rseman says: Apr 30, 2012 1:39 PM

Where are the thousands of snide comments about how stupid this decision is?

The Vikings made a similar move signing a basketball player with far higher upside and they were ruthlessly mocked for it, largely by Packer fans.

  28. iheartharvin says: Apr 30, 2012 2:07 PM

Norseman, your an idiot and making our fanbase look like we know nothing about football. Dale Moss is 10x the prospect. It’s not even close. Moss is bigger, faster, and taller. It’s a joke to think otherwise. That said, Skol Vikes.

  29. stavreafavre says: Apr 30, 2012 4:20 PM

“Far higher upside” = “Not very good now.”
Thompson finds at least one UFA nearly every year who comes on to make the squad. Which is pretty impressive when you consider that those squads are at or near the top of the league.

  30. dempsey63 says: Apr 30, 2012 4:31 PM

Moss sounds like a solid prospect with great upside. But intuition tells me that RB Marc Tyler will be the steal of the Packers’ UDFA group.

  31. thinkfinke says: May 1, 2012 1:05 AM

I have been a Vikings fan my entire life, but Dale Moss is an amazing player and the most dedicated player you will ever meet. I will look forward to him scoring touchdowns, even against my own Vikings. Head to training camp this year Pack Fans, you are going to see one of the best UDFA pick ups of all time!!! Pure Athlete!

check out some of his ridiculous dunks at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsovbfuJU7Y

Check your stats again there guy. Up until the last two years when the Vikes have stunk, the years in which one team had a better record than the other has been nearly even. And one of the years in which GB had the better record they lost to Minnesota in the playoffs. History is so much better when you revise it.
