Irsay expects Luck’s contract to be finalized “swiftly”

Indianapolis Colts owner Irsay introduces the team's number one NFL draft pick Luck in Indianapolis Reuters

The Colts have already begun contract talks with new quarterback Andrew Luck, and owner Jim Irsay confirmed that he envisions no hiccups on a deal with the No. 1 overall pick.

“It’s something that should be done swiftly,” Irsay told the Indianapolis Star. “There shouldn’t be a difficult process with that.”

Luck’s contract is expected to “mirror” 2011 No. 1 overall pick Cam Newton’s. The Panthers signed Newton to a four-year, fully guaranteed $22.025 million deal late last July, after the lockout ended.

Newton’s signing bonus was $14,518,544.

“It’s not complicated,” Irsay explained. “There’s no incentives. … Four years with the fifth year as an option.”

wait, if there is a rookie salary cap, why is it so hard to get the deal done? doesn’t the NFL set the limit for the round each player taken?

  3. steelmeats says: Apr 29, 2012 2:50 PM

The rookie wage scale made last years lockout totally worth it.

  4. theprocessoflosingmymind says: Apr 29, 2012 3:00 PM

Why wasnt this done weeks and weeks ago??? Cam Newton contract plus 3% for salary cap inflation. Its not like there was any question who they were taking. Wh
at have they been doing for the last 6 weeks?

peytonsneck18 this is for you. Whats the point of hurrying up. He still hasn’t graduated and can’t practice. O but he’s so smart, and RG3 sucks. RG3 graduated high school early and college. You are a douche. You constantly talk about how RG3 will get injured. Why do you care. I hope Luck has a good career, but I do hope you have a terrible ACL tear. Now that you had someone respond to your post, and mention how much of a tard you are, you can pull your pants back up and get back to your miserable life.

You’re doing it wrong! Redskins drafted second, they Hail, it’s their thing. Colts hail mayflower trucks?

So newton got $14 million up front & then gets 2 million/year for 4 years?

  8. mf7krime says: Apr 29, 2012 3:32 PM

It’s not hard to get a deal done. The article says nothing about it being difficult, in fact, it explicitly states the opposite.

  9. nyyjetsknicks says: Apr 29, 2012 3:39 PM

Why have an agent if your contract is pretty much set by the rookie wage scale?

I can’t wait for Andrew Luck to have a completely average career. He’s been completely overhyped by the NFL and the media outlets. WOW 1,000 people showed up for the rally on Friday!!! When the Bills signed DREW BLEDSOE close to 20,000 showed up for a rally. Same thing when Jim Kelly arrived in ’86. I guess 1,000 people showing up is impressive because this is the same city that greeted the Colts at the airport with about 100 people after their Super Bowl loss to New Orleans. Worst fans in the NFL bar none.

Hurry up and sign him, so you can throw him under the bus.

Thats what the Jets did with Sanchez and look how well he turned out.

I hope it works out for Luck but I’m beginning to have my doubts only because he’s following Manning. Ditto for RG3 if the Colts would have picked him. Brian Griese didn’t have a chance in Denver following John Elway. HTTR!!

  13. mf7krime says: Apr 29, 2012 4:49 PM

I love a Bills fan knocking the Colts. Hilarious. Hopefully you can keep your POS franchise in Buffalo.

If Luck has an average career he’ll be better than your team’s savior Ryan Fitzpatrick.

    Dumb.

The Bills didn’t sign Bledsoe in the draft. He is a patriot for life! And of course 20,000 fans would show up after he was acquired. Bledsoe is the last Pro Bowl QB the Bills have had.

@mf7krime: POS franchise eh? You obviously aren’t too schooled in the history of the NFL and I’m suspecting you don’t know too much about the game. Some of the best players to ever play the game played for this “POS franchise”: Cookie Gilgrist, Billy Shaw, Jack Kemp, Joe DeLamielleure, OJ Simpson, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith, Cornelius Bennett, Andre Reed, Jim Kelly, Darrell Tailey, Kent Hull, Ted Washington, etc…I’m sorry, you probably don’t recognize any of those names because you started following the NFL in 1998.

We’ve fallen on hard times but Buffalo still supports it’s team as good as any franchise in the NFL. Where were the Colts before Peyton? We all know what a “POS franchise” they were last year without him. If Luck is a flop, that team will be calling in the Mayflower trucks in a few years once all the Peyton bandwagon jumpers fall off. The Bills are arguably the most improved team in the NFL this offseason….They’ll have a top 10 defense and a top 10 offense next year. When the Bills are hosting a home playoff game next January, you’ll realize the Colts are the real “POS franchise”. Good luck putting all your hope with a rookie QB. That works out once every 20 years.

the colts dont need to throw a huge party for luck…. why would u do anything more than give him a playbook? when ryan leaf was drafted he went on a binger in las vegas….. big partiers= big bust…. and as far as only 100 ppl showing up at airport to celebrate a loss? maybe us hoosiers aint all that stupid….. we all had to get up to go to our jobs the next morning….. go eat some wings honey!!! buffalo wings….. how stupid buffalos cant fly

Congratulations on winning the offseason. I know this is the only time of year you have to be excited about the POS Bills. Now and through the first five or six games and then……

You’re really going to knock the Pats off their perch in the AFC East huh? You’re really going to do it this time? Host a playoff game?

    K :)

@mf7krime: they’ll smoke the Colts I can tell you that much. Don’t worry Colt fan, you have plenty of rebuilding years ahead of you to look forward to. Who do you think the Colts will draft 1st overall next year? Nice smiley face, my 15 year old niece loves using those too.

What’s up with the Bills fan? I mean it’s one thing to smash on the Colts if you’re a Pats fan or Titans, Jags, Ravens, but the Bills? I mean you guys are DOORMATS to the AFC east. Isn’t your team playing like half of their games in Toronto? So who are you to say that the Colts will be packing it up? Really a top ten offense? I have to express some doubt. I guess everyone has a right to their own opinion…
    Once every 20 years huh?
    Eli Manning–2 rings
    Big Ben –2 rings
    Aaron Rodgers–1 ring
Andy Daulton– Much better than Fitzpatrick
    Jay Cutler— see above
Mike Vick— Really you wouldn’t take him over what you have?
    Matt Stafford—see above
    Matt Ryan— See above
    Joe Flacco— ^^^^^^^

All of those guys are 1st rounders.

No, not everyone is a superstar but all of them are better than the Bills option.

@rtbragg5: the thing you don’t understand is all of the QBs on your list have been aided by top tier defenses their entire career. A great defense makes any QB look better (which you will see this year out of Fitzpatrick). You were lucky to have a QB for 10 years who could win (in a dome) with a horrible defense. Now you have a rookie QB who is expected to carry the team. That is how most first overall picks fail. Smart move waiting until the 5th round to draft a defensive player. That should really help take pressure off Luck this year and down the road.

Not a fan of the Colts, but anyone commenting about a team that starts 5-0 every year and then drops 11 games cannont talk bad about the colts. Colts were contenders for 11 years, Don’t bash Andrew Luck when you guys took J.P. Losman and even better RoboSack aka rob johnson!!!

  26. kronix7 says: Apr 30, 2012 11:04 PM

1000? Throwing out a number and hoping you are doesn’t make your argument sound Bills fan. Anybody remember the Bills Superbowl runs where they lost 4 years in a row? 25 plus years ago.
