Wow, all of you guys that STILL talk about how Snyder owning the team is what’s killing us are complete idiots. Syder has been out of the Redskins spotlight for TWO years and has let Shanahan and Allen do the work while he signs the checks. At least he’s not blowing up Twitter like some owners. He’s finally understanding what it is to be a team owner.
As far as picking up Cousins. What’s the big deal? A team with two horrible QB’s last year cut one, drafted a first rounder and a fourth rounder. One of two things will happen. 1)We end up with a good backup groomed to our offense, or 2)He playes well in the preseason, at the end of a few games we may be winning or, god forbid, plays well if RGIII gets hurt, and a year or two from now a QB hungry team coughs up a few draft picks for him. Win/Win.
As a Skins fan, I hate to even imagine that RGIII won’t pan out the way we want, but if that ever happens, then we also have another QB drafted just for us waiting on the bench.
As far as RGIII “feeling the pressure” because they drafted a guy in the fourth, I’m pretty sure he realizes how much the Skins gave up for him and that the starting job is his to lose. I doubt very seriously that drafting cousins will affect him at all.

While the moves makes some sorta sense on paper (John Beck? Good the Fkuck BYE!) the bad mojo in the Schuler/Ferrotte fiasco is enough to give any Skins fan pause.

That is going to come up over and over until RGIII can ignite some fire. Even then, first falter, it all comes back up. … backup… hehe. Funny.

This is stupid to blame Snyder. They drafted a center, RT, ILB and S if you watched the rest of their draft…..and a G and RB. What are you talking about? It’s better to have a 4th rd pick backup than an undrafted or 7th round backup. Snyder had nothing to do with the draft. It’s just a lazy criticism on your part. Bruce Allen and Shanahan run the draft dumb ass.

Just a few comments:

If you are still mentioning Dan Snyder as a figure who makes football decisions, you are grossly out of touch with this team and have displayed the lack of knowledge of the team at hand to even be in this discussion.

If you are still talking about linemen, get a new argument… I mean we drafted 3 damn linemen and some Skins fans are still complaining.

The only legitimate argument against the Cousins pick is that maybe the Skins should have gone with a DB (safety in particular). Rex Grossman averaged 2 INTS per game. 1 turnover equals 40% chance to win a game, after two turnovers your chance of winning plummets faster than Janoris Jenkins draft stock. (Google it and see for your self) Beck was so scared of being like Grossman he held on to the ball and got sacked ridiculously. There Redskins needed a QB and a backup QB more than anything…ANYTHING. People love to say how we have sucked it up over the years and we have. Why have we sucked QB PLAY!!!! Before we switched to a 3-4 we have had a top 10 defense and decent running attack. Why then were games being lost? QB PLAY!!! You can also add the owner meddling in there in the early part of our era of suck. The two things we needed the most was the owner to write checks and let football minds make decisions and a QB and a backup QB. Both things have happened and now all that is left is to make sure RG3 and/or Cousins don’t suck. If you think we suck, at least be educated as to why we suck. Otherwise shutcha mouth.

How do the Redskins re-coup some drafts picks…. well you start by drafting a QB whom you can develop and trade… i.e. Matt Cassell, Kevin Kolb, Matt Schaub etc….

Cousins provides insurance and an asset to trade in the future. Good strategy by Washington, they took a page out of New England’s playbook.

Now they just have to develop Cousins, hope that when he gets a chance to fill in for RG3 he plays well and they will get back at least a 2nd rounder or first rounder, maybe even more in a trade.

As I have said previously you do not draft a player just to say you drafted a need. You stay to your draft board and if there isn’t a position of need that you think is worth that pick you draft the highest player on the board which just happens to be Kirk Cousins. I completely agree with skinsfaninnebraska we have filled some needs in FA and we will feel more in UDFA’s without wasting a draft pick. And why not have a back up QB ready just in case there is an injury. I mean we are talking football and injuries do happen. All this pick means is they would rather have Cousins as a back up over Beck and Grossman.

Wow, isn’t it amazing how some utter geniuses who post on PFT can find such glaring flaws in a player as GG Eden has shared with us — when the entire national sports media has missed seeing them! I am sure that after reading GG’s evaluation of RGIII Mike Shanahan is cursing himself for having made such a terrible mistake with the 2nd overall pick!

Also, what is it with the Kirk Cousins pick that is such a problem for so many people? There are many historical examples of teams drafting QBs like this — some of which are listed in posts above this one. How is it that Andy Reid drafts Foles and he’s doing the smart thing, but Shanahan picks up a good value in Cousins and he’s an idiot?

You say the Redskins had other needs that should have been addressed in this draft? They have done just that, both in the draft and by signing UDFAs.

How do you go from making the smartest move to making one of the dumbest move. You don’t draft another QB after you already have your future one unless they have little doubt in RG3. This makes me wonder, do the redskins wish they had luck instead, Cousins is a potential starter, not backup material. I hope this doesn’t shake RG3 confidence, how could they put pressure on him to succeed when they have a guy who could compete with him. This is RG3 team and you suppose to go all in with him, not have a backup plan especially before the guy even steps on the field. What’s gonna happen if RG3 have a couple of bad pre-season games and Cousins plays good? This has controversial written all over the two.

This is a very stupid pick, one Mel Kiper called a “luxury pick”, and one the Skins didn’t have! You need to focus on a linemen, period! Unless you plan on trading this guy it was very dumb and I can’t understand their thinking.

Good pick. They mentioned on the telecast that Shanahan might be trying to recreate the Elway/Kubiak dynamic as they were both drafted in 83, Elway by Colts, Kubiak by Broncos or Kelly/Reich, Kelly drafted in 83, Reich in 85, although Kelly went to USFL and didnt show up until 86.

Cousins IS more pro ready than RG3 today.
However RG3 is far more athletic with way more upside overall.
I watched every game Cousins played in college and his one bad attribute is that sometimes he makes really bad decisions under pressure when the game is on the line.
If he can get that taken care of he should have a good career.

No GG, Griffin isn’t fragile, EVERY NFl Qb sans maybe Roethlisberger is and even he finally missed games.

EVERY team has issues with quality backups. It’s a priority for EVERY team because it’s become very likely in today’s NFL that your starting QB -no matter who he is- is probably going to get dinged enough to miss a game or two. I guess Peyton Manning is wounded too because they drafted a QB, same with Luck who also had a QB drafted along with him.

Griffin knows he’s the starter, Cousins knows he’s the starter. The only person that seems to have any doubts about why Cousins has been brought in is you. This was a depth/bench signing with the possible bonus of being a Matt Flynn trade bait type of guy a few years down the line or the Redskins quality backup for years to come.

I think that they drafted Cousins as he would be a better backup to Griffin than Grossman. Grossman knows the offense of last year, however both Shanny’s have stated that they will be tailoring the offense to Griffin which quite frankly leaves Grossman out as he can’t get out of his own way. Cousins is quicker.

Not to mention the fact that 2 people learning at the same time from the same starting point have a higher chance of progressing better and more quickly.

I was surprised by the pick, but after watching the draft, I think that it was a pick well spent.

A backup is more important than most people are remembering.

Oh and by the way, the Jags didn’t take a kicker, which is almost worth a 3rd rounder (based on the kicker), they drafted a punter, which is absolutely hilarious, though I do hope it pays off for them.

A great pick. Every starting NFL QB is exactly one play away from being out for the season, and having not just a backup, but a long-term backup, is a great insurance policy.

Seattle and the Redskins both took the same approach: They weren’t happy with their current QB play, so they went out and got “the guy” for the job (or, if you listen to the rhetoric, to “compete” for the job with Rex Grossman or Tavaris Jackson), and both spent valuable assets on acquiring another young QB prospect.

If Griffin or Flynn get hurt or bomb out, their teams won’t have to look far to find someone with some possible upside to put in. Grossman and Jackson have no upside; we know their ceilings, and “greatness” is not there. At least with Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins, there’s hope for something better than mediocrity.

You sell the farm to acquire RG III, then you acknowledge his injury-proneness and possible struggle developing by drafting the next best QB asap, instead of putting your entire faith in that first pick, and focusing on other needs and giving him weapons. It ‘sends a message’ of “just in case” to RG III as well.

Nah what’s funny is how much you’re OBVIOUSLY trying to convince yourself that Griffin is going to suck. Obsess much? You’ve posted this same nonsense about Griff in every single thread about him. A more blatant homeristic take from a Colts fan has yet to be posted.

Why draft a QB 3 round later…Oh I dunno, because you need to revamp the entire QB unit and the only people Grossman and Beck scare are their own teammates and coaches? Nah….crazy crazy stuff!

If Griffin is emotionally wounded by this and needs to have his hand held (your assertion not based on any evidence whatsoever) then that makes the Cousins pick all the better. Either way they are upgrading from Grossman and Beck and no one sensible with a pulse would argue that they haven’t upgraded significantly in the process even with 2 rookies.

Did people forget what Jimmy Johnson did with the cowgirls in the late ’80′s?! He drafted Troy Aikman and b4 the 4th rd was over he picked Steve Walsh. Never draft a franchise qb like the Jets did with Sanchez and provide no competition. More times than not the player never reaches his potential. I see what Shanahan is doing with the pick of rb Alfred Morris, he’s recreating the Cowboys who won 3 Superbowls in a row in the mid ’90′s. All he needs now on next yrs draft is to draft 2 tall receivers and we’ll be competing for Superbowls. Brilliant drafting! HTTR!! ;D

If I go by the logic or lack thereof in most of the blog entries then I guess the Colts have no faith in Luck and\or Luck is destined to fail taking into account they drafted Chandler Harnish and everyone who has a brain knows they had other pressing needs on their roster but yet they took a QB…oh wait maybe they took him because they had a need at the backup QB spot just like the Redskins do…lol

How do you get worse that Grossman, Beck and Mcnabb?Beck, that punk, cost us games last year and he rightfully got kicked to the curb.
