I (like many others) wish he had it done earlier, but his doctors may have asked him to take a few months to see how it heals naturally. I have to assume his doctors are doing literally everything they can to keep him healthy.

Now that it won’t, the procedure will need to be completed. With a little over 3 months until training camp, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Likely the doctors wanted to wait and see if the issue would heal on it’s own. It was healing too slow so surgery became necessary.

If it involved a scalpel near my groin I’d want to wait and see too.

I’m willing to bet that his “groin” injury was misdiagnosed by the team doctors and on second opinion after “rest” (which is typically the treatment for a groin pull/tear), it turned out to be a sports hernia.

Sports hernias are more typical in soccer players and hockey goalies. The starting and stopping and pushing off by wide receivers is much closer to those two other sports players. I remember most notably former Raiders WR Jerry Porter was told by team doctors that he had a groin injury that lingered for weeks on end, when in fact it was a sports hernia. Weeks of rest didn’t help, but to treat the sports hernia, all it took was a 30 minute surgical procedure.

Sports hernia surgery recovery time varies, but it’s typical and expected to be able to walk out on your own power immediately after surgery and full recovery (NFL standards healthy) is a few weeks.
