Jaguars rack up 17 undrafted free agent signings

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced via press release Monday that they have signed 17 undrafted free agents. In alphabetical order, the list is as follows:

LSU defensive end Kendrick Adams, UTEP running back Joe Banyard, Northern Colorado tackle Lee Barbiasz, UTEP cornerback Antwon Blake, Virginia Tech receiver Jarrett Boykin, Ohio State center Mike Brewster, Bethune-Cookman defensive end Ryan Davis, Langston cornerback Antonio Dennard, Florida A&M receiver Kevin Elliott, Texas State guard D.J. Hall, Murray State cornerback Dontrel Johnson, Western Michigan defensive tackle Drew Nowak, UCLA receiver Nelson Rosario, Cincinnati linebacker J.K. Schaffer, Wagner linebacker Julian Stanford, Memphis defensive end Frank Trotter, and North Dakota tight end Matt Veldman.

Jaguars G.M. Gene Smith always does a ton of work on the small-school scouting circuit. Smith’s only small-school draft pick was used on Ashland defensive tackle Jeris Pendleton, but the work paid off in Jacksonville’s undrafted rookie class.

Brewster (pictured) is arguably the Jaguars’ highest-profile UDFA signing. A 49-game starter at Ohio State, Brewster earned second-team All-Big Ten honors as a senior center, behind Michigan’s David Molk. Molk was drafted in the seventh round by the Chargers.

I would love to see what could be done if Jags hired the Redskins’ draft personnel. Maybe drafting a second kicker for insurance.

This is where they should have got a punter, not the 3rd round

    Oh no! We suck again!!!

“ALL IN” – With nine-deuce off-suite and the low stack!

Brewster has a shot to make the team. The others could be practice squaders at best.

Brewster started 49 games at OSU. Strong. With Brad Meester at age 35 starting at C, let’s hope Brewster makes the team and can be a project for Meester. No better guy on the team to learn from.

To add to the other 42 players on the roster who wouldn’t be able to get drafted.

    No punters?

I guess that’s a good thing. Nothing like a punter controversy to divide a team.

North Dakota tight end Matt Veldman, is incorrect. Should be North Dakota State, recent FCS Champs

The Redskins have draft personnel? I thought all they did was overpay for free agents…

Redskins laid off their draft personnel following the draft because they have no picks for the next three years.

Nelson Rosario looks like a sleeper pick to me. 6-5, 230, big reach, great athletic ability. 65 catches, over 1,100 yards last season in Pac 12. For a team that didn’t throw the ball often or well.

    *herp derp* insert punter comment.
Jaguars are a competitive team regardless of what the average espn-watching simpleton fans.
Media loves to bash the Jaguars and its getting old. Jacksonville is a great ocean front community who are some of the best fans that deserve a break from time to time.

Saying Matt Veldman is from North Dakota is an insult. He’s from North Dakota STATE. 2011 FCS Champions. Not the University of North Dakota Fighting over what their nickname is going to be’s…

As a Cincinnati Alum who watched all of their games, you might be surprised by J.K. Schaffer. A bit under-sized but makes up for it by always being in great position to make the play.

Very good in space and a tackling machine…not to mention a workhorse.

  16. momentumtech says: Apr 30, 2012 6:51 PM

Keep your eyes on Brewster (obviously) plus Nowak, Veldman and Carter for having the best chances to make the roster.

    kristparrish ,

Jacksonville is a dump. If you are anyone you will move to PVB or St. Augustine!

Get use to it. As long as we have Gene Smith guiding the ship, (yes grabbing a punter in the 3rd round is hilarious) we will continue to be a laughing stock.

Why should others treat us like a professional NFL team when it’s amatuer hour at Jaguar’s HQ?

Do you see other organizations doing the stupid stuff we do? Said it before and I’ll say it again: FIRE GENE SMITH.

Don’t be surprised if Jarrett Boykin makes the team. He’s not fast but he was a terrific possession receiver at Virginia Tech.

They should sign even more, maybe they could pay them with season tickets and then take the tarps off of at least one section of the stadium

  21. cometophillyforthecrack says: Apr 30, 2012 9:01 PM

I could swear the headline read: “Jags sign 17 season ticket holders”

Yeah, enjoy watching your team in Canada, eh?

    cometophillyforthecrack says:Apr 30, 2012 9:01 PM

No need for a comeback on this one. Philly says it all. It’s a joke in itself.

  23. maddenisfordorks says: Apr 30, 2012 10:01 PM

Can’t wait for the season to start!

And btw no one lives in St.Augustine unless they own multiple confederate flags, or just are flat out Mexican.

  24. drtharrison says: Apr 30, 2012 11:05 PM

Not to mention Jacksonville University’s own Josh McGregor has been invited to minicamp. Scoff as much as you want, he won’t make the team. But kudos to Josh, and giving higher profile to the JU Dolphins!

For all you guys bashing the punter pick… have you seen the numbers on that kid? They’re not just good, they’re astronomical. He has a chance of being one of the best in the league right out the gate.

I don’t have any problems with any of the draft picks. The Jags are pretty much complete now. They could use another defensive end IMO, like the Giants to really get after it on 3rd down, but there aren’t any holes anymore. That said, everything is riding on Gabbert.
