Former Tennessee quarterback Matt Simms, one of Phil Simms’ football-playing sons, wasn’t drafted.  But he’ll get a chance to win an NFL job this week, as he participates in the Jets’ minicamp on a tryout basis.

Matt Simms is one of 23 tryout players who have been invited to the camp.  The best of the best could join the 10 undrafted free agents with whom the Jets have reached agreements in principle.

The Jets’ new undrafted free agents are: OL John Cullen (Utah); LB Marcus Dowtin (North Alabama); CB Donnie Fletcher (Boston College)l DL Damon Harrison (William Penn); QB G.J. Kinne (Tulsa); TE Brian Linthicum (Michigan St.); DB D’Anton Lynn (Penn State); CB Ryan Steed (Furman); LB Donovan Robinson (Jackson State); and LB Brett Roy (Nevada).

UPDATE 6:46 p.m. ET:  As several folks have reminded us, Chris Simms (brother of Matt and former NFL quarterback) recently took a coaching job with the Patriots.

Watched him play against LSU…this guy doesn’t have a chance in the NFL. Getting by on the last name. (See: Chris Polian)

I can see him as a developmental project. He has the brain smarts but does not a gun for an arm.

    He’s no Chris Simms!

Too bad Matt will only have enough time to admire the scenery before he finds himself cut.

Why is there an article about Matt Simms?? I just researched his stats and in his best season (2010) he threw 1469yds 8td’s to 5 interceptions (He was also sacked 25 times that year). Last year he threw 0 td’s to 3interceptions for 319yds (sacked 4times). Why waste your time giving him a tryout? -How desperate could you be??

With the Jets, it’s all about getting publicity. It gets them in the news.

The entire Simms family is just getting by with their name and daddy’s money. Always have and apparently always will. Just because daddy won a SB (it was an accident) doesn’t mean either Chrissy or his little brother have ANY talent.

The Simms are kind of freaky, like Children of the Corn or “Utah”.

Hope he has been doing spleen crunches. I think his Brother Chris holds the NFL record for passes batted down at the line of scrimmage.

Phil Simms sucked so it’s not like they have great NFL pedigree to begin with. Their old man was a game manager for a team that happened to have a better backup. Someone probably owns Tuna a favor.

damn, and I thought you guys just hated the jets….guess it’s anything from ny, huh?

that’s said, but I guess if I lived in ohio or kentucky or pennsylvania etc, I’d be jealous of the greatest city in the world too

I hate the giants as much as you guys do, but simms didn’t suck. his super bowl was legendary…and he’s a good anaylyst.

    He will get into coaching.

Well Chris Simms totally sucked. I remember when Orton was injured and Simms got the start. He lasted about halfway through the 1st (iirc) and got yanked for Orton who I believe was asleep in the jacuzzi at the time.

Poor Kyle. I think that was the only time he ever got cheered at home. :)

And, he’ll be the best QB on the Jets roster…

A nice gesture by NY. Simms wanted to know…..Does he get to keep his jersey????

Will phil punch the coaches if he gets cut?

I don’t think Desmond Howard would approve. I’d tell you he stinks but his Daddy might wanna fight me too.

  20. majbobby says: May 1, 2012 7:09 AM

Heck he is already better at throwing than their current back up QB

  21. rexryanbigmouth says: May 2, 2012 1:29 AM

We just needs bodies for rookie camp. None of these guys will make the 53. It’s how the NFL does it. We can’t afford to hire temps to hold the tackling dummies
