Love it: competition at the kicker position. Rex loves people who use their feet. Tom Coughlin says you can never have enough pass rushers; Rex Ryan says the hell with pass rushers, you can never have enough kickers.

Seahawks were helped by his being cut by St. Louis. It immediately put pressure on Steven Hauschka (K) who likely felt he had to re-sign the restricted free agent one-year contract offer on the table. If he hadn’t, Josh may have signed back with Seattle.

On February 29, 2008, Brown signed with the St. Louis Rams who made him the NFL’s highest paid kicker at the time. The Seahawks had offered comparable money, but with an extra year and back loaded the whole deal. Which also would have made Brown the highest paid kicker, but he took offense to the fact that the Seahawks’ contract was something Brown got offered after visiting the St.louis Rams. In an interview on Seattle sports radio station KJR 950 Brown stated that he had not wanted to be a “slave to the businessman,” a statement that was ridiculed by Seattle media and fans.[1]

Josh Brown is just being brought in as a body. Folk will keep the job and has done very well as the Jets kicker the past 2 seasons. (See Payton’s last game in Indy tape when Folk beat Indy in their house in the 2011 playoff game. He’s done just fine.

Josh Brown is not washed up and is a good pickup for the Jets. He is one of the most consistent kickers in the short to mid range distances. He also has good strength for the longer distances.

This move is more of a salary cap and purely fiscal issue. He left Seattle for St. Louis when they were unwilling to pay more for him than they felt that position justified. St. Louis must have felt the same at this point.

I know were gonna end up keeping both with Folk used as the long distance kicker it’s a total jets move to waste 2 roster spots on a kicker instead of just keeping jay feely…

I figured this was coming – especially after Rex Ryan guaranteed that Nick Folk would always be the starting kicker as long as he was head coach.

With Tebow running the Wildcat why do they even need a kicker who can split the posts from 30 yards? Hell, that’s Tebow Time!

I’d sooner have seen the Jets find someone like Morten Anderson who could consistently and confidently nail three from practically any distance short of, what, 58 yards out.
