Nate Clements could be candidate for release in Cincinnati

The addition of Dre Kirkpatrick in the first round means that the Bengals now have a glut of cornerbacks on the roster.

They’ll need to pare down the group at some point and Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer points to Nate Clements as a guy who could be headed out the door. Clements is set to make $4.3 million in base salary this season and that could make his roster spot vulnerable if the team decides Kirkpatrick is ready to start at left corner as a rookie.

Such a turn of events is complicated by the fact that the Bengals don’t know what they are going to get from Leon Hall this season. Hall has started doing some running in his recovery from a torn Achilles, but there’s no sign yet that he’s going to be ready to go full speed when the team gets to camp or the start of the regular season. As mentioned, there are no shortage of options at corner, but Terence Newman, Pacman Jones and company haven’t been as reliable on the field as Clements has been for the Bengals.

On the surface, the move seems to make more economic sense than football sense although it wouldn’t be the first time something happened for those reasons.

Bengals are quietly building a great NFC North football team. Too bad they play in the AFC North. Get bigger up front or continue to lose to the Stillers and Ratbirds.

Especially if Mike Brown owns the team.

Clements killed us in SF, but he played well for the Bengals last year for the most part.

Come to Cleveland. We love Buckeyes. Even old ones. Mike Adams left. Put him at safety.

By all indications the Bengals are building a nice team…but we’ve seen this before with these guys.

Shoo fly…dumb steeler fans..we did get bigger up front. Better hope Ben doesn’t get sacked as much as he did last year..lol..WHO DEY!!!!

Replacing Nate Clements with Terence Newman screams cheapness.

    Mike Brown strikes again.

He and his kiddos can thank Mike Nolan and Jed York for a ridiculous amount of cash. Clements is the poster child for overpaying in free agency at no fault of his own.

  12. quizguy66 says: May 2, 2012 5:23 PM

So Reedy answered a reader question about Clements, gave an answer that speculated that he could go if things fall a certain way, and this is a big story on here?

Hall would have to be 100% for this to even be considered. I don’t think is likely to occur – certainly not before training camp takes place.

I’d blame a slow news day, but it is far from that today.

I think we keep Nate for presence in the locker room. I mean, we really can’t let Pacman mentor Mr. #Swag, that will end up in a Hamilton County Jail cell or a strip club.

idiot comment about Mike Brown on a Bengals thread… joetoronto strikes again

i don’t think Clements will be released until he’s beaten out by either Newman or Jason Allen.

Oh, did the move happen? I wasn’t aware that Clements was released….

    Try harder, Joe.

If he gets let go please detroit grab him..we need another vet at corner!

  22. detroitcityryda says: May 2, 2012 7:05 PM

Lions should take him Work out a one year deal and we get a decent player to help us out at cb spot ,which is in dire need of experience even after we drafted 3 rookie CB’s I still see us being burned deep .

Funny thing is Steely McBeam, the Bengals offensive line is better than the Steelers offensive line. I would also say that the Bengals Defensive Line is better than the Steelers Defensive Line.

Not a Steelers fan but dude how can you even try to say the Bengals defensive line is better than the Steelers? The Steelers have finished in the top 3 in run defense 8 out of the last 10 years. Last year they were horrible finishing 8th IN THE LEAGUE!! Face the facts, the Steelers offensive line got a lot better in the draft. DeCastro and Pouncey will be great on the inside and then they added Mike Adams to boot. The Steelers are going to be good next year.

Ok ok now let’s look at this a little further steeler twits, Now we’ll include your stellar stand up DE’s in this, also known as OLB’s in a 3-4 aside of that your best d-linemen is Kiesel agreed? Ok now we have Casey Hampton no spring chicken(neither is Keisel)and expecting a drop-off one of these years possibly this year and how many snaps did he play this past season? Now Aaron Smith not even on the roster… Ziggy Hood now forgive me steeler nation because I know this could never happen to you but isn’t he kinda a bust?!? Just admit it the window of opportunity is shutting. Get the tearable towel ready I see alot of crying coming in the near future! Bigger up front? In case you haven’t noticed o-line play has not been a problem in cincy in years c’mon stop living in the past we have! Just let it go, it’s over.

    @gobills17:

Steelers- 8th against the run, 4.0 per rush, 17th is sacks.

Bengals- 10th against the run, 3.9 per rush, 5th in sacks.

The Bengals defensive line is better. Glad I could educate you. Learn about the Bengals before you trash them next time!

The Bengals defensive line is why the Bengals were 7th in defense last season. Now that the Bills have improved theirs, maybe you guys will finish higher than 26th…

i would honestly cut pac man i think clemonts brings more to the table but i would try to restructure his contract a little

  29. tiggerblood says: May 4, 2012 7:39 PM

Pacman is a great nickel guy, and depth is so important especially with injuries to the position year in year out. As always keep the best guys at the 53 cut down. No way he’ll restructure 1 yr contract!
