Not a Lions fan, but that would be a good fit. There's a very good chance Best will never become a featured back not only because of his injuries, but also because he can't run the ball between the tackles. Leshoure will be back this year, but I'm not sold on him. I watch college football religiously & I was very unimpressed with him at Illinois. Leshoure seems to lack the burst & one/two step acceleration needed for a RB to be successful in the NFL. Ryan Grant is a great story (coming from Giants practice squad to 1,000 yard rusher for GB), but even more than his story, he's a damn good RB. He struggled last year because he was coming off that ankle injury & he was splitting duties with James Starks. I expect Grant to come back at full health & return to his 2008-2009 form. The team that signs him will be getting a pretty good bargain considering that he's probably only going to get a one year, incentive-laden deal with a small base number. Grant is one of my favorite college football players from the past decade at Notre Dame & I really wish the guy luck & success returning to the back I know he can be.

I don't care if he can't turn a one yard gain into 12...the Lions just need a RB who can actually get that one yard when it's 3rd and inches. They sure didn't have that last year. If they have to go through 10 guys to find one that can just get that first down, then so be it. Who else is out there...sign them too!

I don't understand why Detroit is so quick to write off Kevin Smith. He was a well-regarded, highly-drafted prospect just a few years ago. I thought they gave up on him too quickly the first time, and can't figure out why they don't seem interested in giving him much of a role going forward after he performed very well last year under tough circumstances. He came in with no training camp and was very effective down the stretch-- in limited action (four starts) he ran for 4.9 YPC, caught 22 passes at 8.1 yards per clip, and scored seven touchdowns. I'd have thought that would be good enough to at least go into camp as the number one guy (pending Best's health status, obviously), but the Lions apparently don't feel that way.

packerfanfordecades says:

Then last year it seemed that he was never able to bounce off the pile and turn a 1 yard gain into a 12 yard gain. That, or the ability to quickly change course to avoid the pile, is the only way to get average yards per carry up high enough to sustain a run game.
--------------------

While I agree with the decision to let Grant walk, the above isn't true to any greater extent that it is for James Starks. The only thing that makes Starks more valuable at this time is his youth. 2011 stats for the two:

Grant: 134 carries; 559 yds; 2 TDs; 47 long

Starks: 133 carries; 578 yds; 1 TD; 40 long

I'd actually give the edge to Grant last year -- he took a screen pass 80 yards for a touchdown. Starks' long reception went for 17.

I'm not saying Grant is the answer -- I'm just saying Starks isn't much better.

----------------------------------------------------

Does that best statistical season include the playoffs? I sorta recall a pass hitting Tracy Porter square in the chest...and another pass of Favre's earlier landing in the hands of a Saints player...and a muffed hand off in the red zone to Adrian Peterson at end of 1st half vs Saints...yeah, that's good stuff right there!

It was sad to see Ryan leave because he had been

So, I guess I can understand the Packers' thinking on Ryan for this next season.

There are probably some Yugos that are scattered around the US that still have gas left in the tank. Doesn't mean you want them.

Grant has pedestrian speed at best. At best you hope for some veteran leadership, but that is your best case scenario.

oooh then we can get all the inside secrets on how to stop the GB running game!
-------------------------------------------------
The secret to stopping the running game is to just leave the same personnel in the secondary. Nobody will bother running it...

Grant has potential, but he has been injured plenty himself. Guess Mayhew figures he'll just keep a stable of injury prone RBs and just use one til he goes down then toss in another, and repeat as necessary.

It's simple. All the Lions have to do is email a copy of their secondary's depth chart to the opposing team, and trust me, they won't bother running the ball.

Im a Packer fan, but that comment is stupid. Are these guys supoosed to merely retire when GB doesn't want them anymore?

Did they even call a running play against us last year?? If they did, I think it basically went something like this:

Aaron Rogers gets under center, sees that he's playing Detroit's secondary, audibles to a pass play and throws wherever he wants.
