APWe noted a month ago that the Ravens are urging left tackle Bryant McKinnie to get himself into better shape. McKinnie says that ideal shape for him means a slightly higher number on the scale than ideal shape for most of us.
The 6-foot-8 McKinnie told the Ravens’ website that he thinks 350 pounds is the perfect weight for him to be a Pro Bowler on the field and a healthy person off the field, so that means he’s trying to drop 15 pounds from his current weight of 365.
“That would be that perfect weight, because when you get too light people start pushing you around,” McKinnie said. “That would take away my advantage.”
Weight has long been an issue for McKinnie, who got close to 400 pounds during the lockout, which contributed to the Vikings’ decision to cut him last year. McKinnie said he got himself into better shape during the season after the Ravens picked him up, and he met with the Ravens before they paid him his $500,000 roster bonus in March. That meeting was mostly an opportunity for the Ravens to make sure he hadn’t packed on the pounds since the season ended.
“They just wanted to see what I looked like physically, make sure I didn’t balloon up,” McKinnie said. “It was important for them to see me here working.”
If McKinnie keeps working and gets himself down to 350, he’s still talented enough to be one of the best left tackles in the NFL.
