Weis calls John Harbaugh’s comments “a joke”

Super Bowl XXXIX Getty Images

Kansas coach Charlie Weis served as a member of the Patriots’ offensive staff for the team’s three Super Bowl runs.  On Friday, Weis was asked to respond to recent comments from Ravens coach John Harbaugh regarding the stain that the Spygate scandal placed on those trophies.

“That’s a joke,” Weis told Evan Cohen and Steve Phillips of SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio.  “That’s really, that’s a joke.  Not even worth commenting on.  It’s a joke.  When people win championships, people win championships.  Every time somebody wins they are looking for a reason why the team won.  We won because we were the best team in those years.  We might not have had the best players but we always had the best team, including 2001 when we beat the Rams when we weren’t supposed to have a chance.”

As offensive coordinator of the Patriots, Weis would have been in position to realize the benefits of the Pats using videotape of defensive coaching signals to crack the code when playing that team again.  Whether it helped win games or not, it’s unlikely Weis would ever admit that.

Though Harbaugh quickly clarified his remarks from Tuesday morning, which given the events of the past few days already feels like a lifetime ago, he had a point.  The perception among fans when a championship NFL team is caught becomes that the championship is tainted.  But that’s not a sentiment an NFL coach should be articulating.

That makes a lot of sense since Weiss has met with nothing but absolute and complete success since he left the Patriot team that was allegedly helped by cheating.

  2. luponatrix says: May 4, 2012 6:16 PM

Funny…I bet Harbaugh says the same thing about Charlie’s weight.

  3. worldwidebleater says: May 4, 2012 6:18 PM

Charlie’s post Patriots record is the real joke.

  4. righthereisay says: May 4, 2012 6:19 PM

Yeah, knowing the other teams signals couldn’t possibly help….whatever.

I’m glad this talk continues and hope it never stops.

  5. packersareandwillalwaysbebetterthanthebears says: May 4, 2012 6:20 PM

There’s a reason the NFL quickly destroyed and looked over the evidence. The only that would be “a joke” would be future Super Bowls after seeing how much the Patriots truly cheated.

  6. gweez76 says: May 4, 2012 6:21 PM

I agree those three SBs are a joke.

I’m sure you were laughing a lot while watching film of your opponents defensive units going over their game plan.

Too bad you didn’t have that at ND. You might have not shamed the University.

  7. philvil41 says: May 4, 2012 6:22 PM

    Hey fat ass Weis,
The Pats lost to the Raiders in the tuck game. You benefited from the worst blown call in NFL history, and didn’t deserve to even be in the AFC Championship let alone the Super Bowl.

  8. masspi says: May 4, 2012 6:23 PM

What would you expect from the team who does more wining than any other team, Harbaugh is a twit from a long line of twits. If he said it, why the big long clarification………what a jerk

We need to put an * next to any name Harbaugh !!!!

  9. citizenstrange says: May 4, 2012 6:24 PM

Charlie Weiss, Romeo Crennel, Eric Mangini, Josh McDaniels, etc. have all had fantastically successful careers once they left they patriots and their alleged cheating.

Oh, wait a minute, I stand corrected. They have all been abject failures once cheating is taken out of the equation.

  10. rexismybff says: May 4, 2012 6:25 PM

“We might not have had the best players but we always had the best team, including 2001 when we beat the Rams when we weren’t supposed to have a chance.”

    =======================

Are you making a case for or against cheating, Charlie? Cause the fact that you beat the Rams when you weren’t “supposed to have a chance” is one of the primary facts used against you.

How are the donuts in Kansas by the way?

  11. larkintp says: May 4, 2012 6:27 PM

The fact Charlie Weis has a head coaching job is a joke.

  12. justanotherdummy says: May 4, 2012 6:27 PM

Well Charlie, I actually think you are a joke. You were such a failure at controlling your own actions you had to have a doctor filet your body open to stop you from eating yourself to death. Coach Harbaugh was correct however, people view your championships as tainted because your team wasn’t on the level. Deny it all you like, but the fact remains you cheated.

  13. johnnyjagfan says: May 4, 2012 6:28 PM

From the guy that shook hands with the opposing coach in the Super Bowl and said “great game, we knew all your plays and you still won!”

I think post-Spygate lack of success of this guy speaks volumes about just how valuable that information was. Weis is the joke.

  14. radrntn says: May 4, 2012 6:28 PM

  16. tweeter75 says: May 4, 2012 6:30 PM

Charlie Weis is a joke. Arguably one of the biggest, most overrated busts in college football history…..definitely the biggest bust in Notre Dame history. Charlie Weis was a part of the Bill Bellichick sytem in New England. Look at Romeo Crennell, Eric Mangini, and Josh McDaniels…..how did they fare after they left Bellichick’s system in New England? They were all total flops. If Weis wants to call someone a joke, look in the mirror.

  23. The Buffer Zone says: May 4, 2012 6:37 PM

    Here’s the real question:

When you think of the Patriots Championships does Spygate enter your brain at all?

If you answered YES, then it’s tainted. I’m guessing the majority of people here answered “yes”.

I don’t know what the big deal is about Harbaugh’s comments. Whether they benefited from cheating or not, we’re questioning it…therefore, they’re tainted.

  24. tim1999 says: May 4, 2012 6:37 PM

Taping the other team from the sidelines was PERFECTLY LEGAL in 2001, 2003 and 2004….the rule changed 2006.

To this very day it is PERFECTLY LEGAL for teams to video other teams from SPECIFIC LOCATIONS.

Belichick was slapped as hard as he was because he ignored multiple league memos reminding one and all that the rule had changed.
The commish also slapped him because he told the commish he didn’t realize he was doing wrong and the commish didn’t believe him and thought he was lied to.

The actual rule breaking in Spygae was minor.

What has been major is how the media has completely misrepresented what went on and failed to give and context and balance.

Very few media and fans could actually identify the facts of Spygate.

That’s how bad the reporting has been on this story.

  27. craigmaitland says: May 4, 2012 6:42 PM

A joke is that the NFL doesn’t strip New England of those titles. They are tainted, spy gate as well as having players caught using steroids.

  28. holeinone09 says: May 4, 2012 6:42 PM

HarBAWL didn’t have the guts to stand by his comments. Players are criticized when they quickly retract statements. This guy is an NFL head coach, he should think before he speaks instead of backtracking on clear statements. He looks foolish. Oh that’s right, he is foolish.

masspi says: “Harbaugh is a twit from a long line of twits.”

Better add FOX’s Alex Marvez to the list… discussing Harbaugh and “the TAINT” with Joe Rose this morning – he said: “Of course the Pats accomplishments are now TAINTED by perception… which is all Harbaugh was trying to get across.”

  30. ravenzfan1 says: May 4, 2012 6:44 PM

Harbaugh is right,he just usually doesnt comment on such garbage. Weis, you wanna think the word ‘cheaters’ wasnt in the Pats vocabulary, you know better and you sir,are a joke. There will ALWAYS be that question now with the Pats.

  31. raqaiw says: May 4, 2012 6:45 PM

Won 3 SBs by 3 points each.
Lost 2 SBs by 3-4 points each.
Cheating is worth about 6-7 points.

Why is it so absurd to think that knowing the answers to the test before taking it is worth about 1 additional TD at the highest level of competition? They still have to execute, but their focus is targeted onto certain key areas that gave them an advantage(otherwise known as cheating, except in Mass.)

  32. goodellmustgo says: May 4, 2012 6:48 PM

If Charlie could cheat as good as good as the Emperor he’d still be coaching Touchdown Jesus.

  33. bpfpft says: May 4, 2012 6:49 PM

“The issue is not stealing signals, that is allowed and it is done quite widely.” Roger Goodell 2007. The common misconception is that the “crime” was stealing signals, it’s not it was videotaping. Those Pats team won with defense and special teams with some offense sprinkled in, that offense wasn’t what the Pats O is today. The fact that it’s so good now should prove the zero help that process provided.

  34. nineroutsider says: May 4, 2012 6:50 PM

I agree that a NFL HC should refrain from making comments like John made.

However, I don’t agree with this comment at all from Weis: “Every time somebody wins they are looking for a reason why the team won.” In other words, everyone starts to hate.

I have never assumed that a team won a championship because of cheating at the time they won it and bet most of you don’t; that is a joke! However, what they did was cheating and they and their fans can defend it all they want, but they didn’t do it the right way. Have others cheated and we never found out, probably, but that matters little.

The Saints and the Pats have * next to their titles and I’m not saying that to piss off their fans, it’s just what I and many others believe. It’s a shame they did that because it changed our perceptions of both teams, especially the Pats and BB. BB is still a great coach, but he removed himself from the conversation of “greatest coaches all time”. Stupid…

  35. rpmcanes says: May 4, 2012 6:51 PM

Yes, the alleged ‘cheating’ was so instrumental in the Pats’ run to a 2-14 season in ’00, missing the playoffs in ’02, and losing in ’05, ’06…

  37. bullcharger says: May 4, 2012 6:55 PM

Totally agree @tim1999. The other point is that many, if not most coaches in the NFL were interviewed during the Spygate scandal and fully admitted stealing defensive signals was part of their strategy. Shannahan said if he didn’t have them before the end of the first quarter something was wrong. The part that everyone thinks was cheating was fully legal.

Weiss shouldn’t have responded at all.

  38. stanzona says: May 4, 2012 6:59 PM

Does anyone care to explain why New England has the best winning percentage (.764) of any team in American professional sports AFTER the Spygate “scandal” broke? How is it that they have a better winning percentage after Spygate than the 6 years before the story broke? I Guess they’re just very lucky. Yeah, that explains it.

  39. travishenryskid says: May 4, 2012 6:59 PM

The fact that the evidence “mysteriously” disappeared and the entire thing was swept under the rug is a joke. Spygate was worse for the integrity of the game than bountygate. The only reason the NFL came down so hard on the Saints and not the Patriots is to protect the NFL from future lawsuits.

  40. unbreakable02215 says: May 4, 2012 7:07 PM

Has anyone ever stopped to consider that even if
the Patriots had ever gained some sort of
advantage from filming signals from the other
sideline that if they faced that team a 2nd or
3rd time subsequently that if said team failed to
actually bother to change their signals then they
really DESERVED to be taken advantage of ?

Has ANYBODY EVER stopped to think about
    that ?

The Patriots won alot before Spygate. They’ve
    won alot after Spygate.

They just win and it starts with the Coach
and the QB. They’re the best. Ever.

  45. jluns275 says: May 4, 2012 7:29 PM

What the Pats were doing during the years of their Super bowl victories was in fact legal until 2006, although it is perhaps telling that they are now 0 – 2 in Super Bowls while being heavily favored against supposedly inferior Giants teams.
Additionally, it also is perhaps noteworthy how altogether underwhelming the head coaching performances by previous Pats’ coordinators have been…
Including Weis’ limited success @ Notre Dame, I count a total of perhaps 5 or 6 winning seasons out of an approximate total of 20 possible head coaching seasons…not such a good winning percentage.
Crennel & Mangini seemed to show a few flashes of success with Cleveland & KC (Crennel) , then Cleveland & NYJ (Mangini).
I am cautiously optimistic Crennel will do well with the Chiefs-he did manage to soundly beat the Packers while fielding Kyle Orton as starting QB.

When professional football players know when a play is coming they will make you look terrible. As a Tampa Bay Buc’s Fan I can tell you that John Lynch stated that they knew what play was coming because they knew the audibles and that Rich Gannon and the Oakland Raiders had not changed anything in their offense since the mastermind of their offense was traded to the Bucs. The Bucs destroyed the Raiders vaunted #1 offense in that Superbowl fair and square, no cheating was involved, but they did know what was coming because of Jon Gruden. Do you mean to tell me that this same simple kind of logic can not be applied to the Patriots and the NFL Spygate coverup, as the public was never shown any of the evidence? Please just stop insulting our intelligence Patriots and Patriot’s Fans.

    1) it is not illegal to steal signals.

    2) not one single tape was ever used in the same game.

    3) like i said it’s not illegal to steal signals or even video tape them, as long as your inside a designated area. ultimately, be it writing them down in a notebook or video tape, shame on the other team for not changing the signals. For the last time, it’s not illegal to steal signals.

  51. tonyromoisterrible says: May 4, 2012 7:43 PM

It would have been great if fatty Weis just came out and said that they cheated. It would have gone something like this…. “Look, its about time someone from those teams owned up to what we did. We cheated. No other way to explain what we did. We taped the other teams signals, watched them over and over again, and then we watched the play that resulted from the sign that we taped. Who couldn’t figure something like this out??? We couldn’t be the only ones, but yes. We CHEATED!!!”

I went to the Patriots Hall of Fame recently, and I looked everywhere and still couldn’t find any of these *’s people speak of. So quit your bitching, anyone who keeps drumming this whole cheating mantra really doesn’t know anything about the history of the game, even Jimmy Johnson said that he would go into the opposing teams booth after games to look for their signals and audibles that they would leave in the trash, and went onto say that if your a head coach in the NFL and don’t change your audibles week in and week out, you deserve to lose……… So get over it you sad little jealous cry babies. Don’t waste time on jealousy. Sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. Keep on trolling along cuz my Patriots Lombardi Trophy’s still look beautiful regardless of your petty comments.

  57. packman331 says: May 4, 2012 7:58 PM

    It’s simple.
You were told not to tape. You did anyway.

If it did not help you, why would you continue to do something against policy? Seems to me, if it was against the rules (to tape), and it did not help you, then there was no reason to keep doing it.

Yet you did. So it had to help.

like a baseball player caught with a corked bat, claiming it is not an edge. Then why do it

You may have won championships anyway, but you actions cause the speculation.

  70. snyper94z28 says: May 4, 2012 10:32 PM

hes not saying they didnt win them legit, hes saying when you cheat and get cought people will always put an asterisk next to the wins. how many SB’s have they won since they were cought? zero. what about the record scoring? way down!! the proof is right there to see. following the patriot wins all you heard on sports center and in the papers is how the patriots defense seemed to know exactly what play was coming, and this was BEFORE they got cought. theres a great article from the washington post quoting santana moss, he said, and im paraphrasing….”everytime we lined up and even before we went in motion and got set their players were yelling out “screen left” or “draw play”..man its like they knew every play before we did….
stuff like that makes you say ahh…then you hear about the cheating…sure it makes you look like you cheated to win… because you did.

  71. snyper94z28 says: May 4, 2012 10:39 PM

harepie, it was explained how and common sense can help you on this matter. and by the way it just wasnt defensive signals..it was offensive as well. so heres the common sense part for you…if you tape the defensive signals…you know on offense right off the bat what play to use and the weak side of the defense to attack…..now on defense taping the offensive plays you knew what was coming and could shift into a better defense and overload the side the run/screen was going to.

bottom line is they cheated and got cought…after that their scoring came down and games werent won by 55-10…they are still a great team and im not saying cheating let them win the SB only..but it sure did help get them their. the giants are one of the few teams the run the new play into the offensive/defensive huddle by carrier so to speak..no signals by hand or whatever….pats cant beat the giants to save their lives. is it becuase the giants match up well? or because the pats dont know what play is coming? i say match up BUT since they cheated it doesnt matter….they cheated…people will always say they cheated to win a SB.

i think everyone agrees outside patriot land that a punishment should have been more severe..but what can you so? technically they didnt break a rule abour filming other signals…so thats why, and the only reason why it wasnt more severe. this was before the comish started handing down punishment for things that had no rule against it like he did for the cowboys/redskins.

They take anything they can dig up to get their “analyst” to talk about for hours. If they had reported the entire conversation, there wouldn’t be so many ill informed fans, amazing with all the instant news sources, we still can’t get the correct information.

“The perception among fans when a championship NFL team is caught becomes that the championship is tainted. But [t]hat’s not a sentiment an NFL coach should be articulating.”

Nailed it. Harbaugh is of course, right — in the sense that the perception will be there among fans. But he shouldn’t be the one saying it. Particularly when his pay check hinges upon the integrity of the NFL.

Sadly, I would question the league’s integrity as soon as they decided to destroy most of the evidence; only criminals or guilty parties attempt to destroy evidence. The buck stops at Roger Goodell’s opaque office door.

harepie, it was explained how and common sense can help you on this matter. and by the way it just wasnt defensive signals..it was offensive as well. so heres the common sense part for you…if you tape the defensive signals…you know on offense right off the bat what play to use and the weak side of the defense to attack…..now on defense taping the offensive plays you knew what was coming and could shift into a better defense and overload the side the run/screen was going to.

bottom line is they cheated and got cought…after that their scoring came down and games werent won by 55-10…they are still a great team and im not saying cheating let them win the SB only..but it sure did help get them their. the giants are one of the few teams the run the new play into the offensive/defensive huddle by carrier so to speak..no signals by hand or whatever….pats cant beat the giants to save their lives. is it becuase the giants match up well? or because the pats dont know what play is coming? i say match up BUT since they cheated it doesnt matter….they cheated…people will always say they cheated to win a SB.
    ———————————————————–

Of the total of 14 tapes turned in by the Pats and Matt Walsh, one tape was found to have offense signals recorded from a Dolphins game in 2002. QBs have been miked since the mid 90s, so much for anything being gained there.

After the Pats got caught, their scoring did not go down. In fact, they were accused of running up the score many times after that 1st game.

I can’t figure out what point you are trying to make in regards with the Giants’ SB wins.

  81. dmb182 says: May 5, 2012 12:16 AM

Warms my heart to know so many people don’t buy the ‘happens all the time man they just got caught doing it’ crap. Time has shown that yes, wether they exist the official record books or not, the general consensus is that when someone talks about the patriot’s ‘dynasty’ someone in that conversation will bring up spy gate, and those asterisk’s really do exist in the real world.

The Patriots were cheaters. Harbaugh was right. And that dynasty is a joke.

I love how when a football topic comes up people love to take personal shots at individuals who are overweight. This whole nonsense of why not just eat less and get some exercise is not exactly helpful or even kind.

Alas, being the internet, there are millions more “tough guys” who come out of the woodwork and judging from the usernames of some people shows their lack of maturity.

Calling guys like Crennel, Weis, both Ryan Brothers, etc., fat slobs shows ignorance.
I’m sure that most of the folks who take personal shots at these guys’ are also morbidly obese and are strong candidates for bariatric surgery.

  83. patriotinvasion says: May 5, 2012 1:23 AM

To the people who say “what have they won since spygate”…you do realize that they are not the same team now that won those 3 Super Bowls right? Like, if we could play every season with Bruschi, Harrison, Vrabel, Law, McGinest, etc…and they didn’t age…and we still hadn’t won anything, than you may have a point…but, they are a completely different team now aside from QB.

  84. patriotinvasion says: May 5, 2012 1:25 AM

I’m pretty sure they had video cameras in 1986 and 1990…the Giants won the Super Bowl both seasons with Belicheck as their defensive coordinator…are those titles tainted to?

  85. bospat says: May 5, 2012 1:42 AM

What’s not a joke is the Pats have better record post-spygate and in fact the best record in the NFL just haven’t been able to win the big one, which might be explained by 2x playing the best team the NFC has fielded in the same timeframe….

    THANK YOU!!!
I’m a Bears fan so this isn’t just another Pats honk gettin bent out of shape!!! For decades this taping was legal & practiced by every team in the league!!! Hell even after 2006 when they changed the rule, it’s foolish for anyone to think that every team doesn’t still have one guy staring across & charting the signals to later chart & compare to what happens on the field!!! Even stupider than thinking how easy it is to cheat based on video of hand signals is the fact that half the D calls are changed in some way on the field after the offensive formation is seen!!

  87. bleed4philly says: May 5, 2012 3:22 AM

gee, I’m surprised Weis didn’t agree with Harbaugh.

what a joke, Charlie Weis has proved what an incredible jerk he is many many times…and, oh by the way….of course the rings are tainted. They cheated!!!! and got caught!!!!

Saints too…and that one hurts, because people all over were rooting for the Saints, the city that had been destroyed, the team that never won anything…that one’s sad.

so, basically, screw Weis and and all the other cheaters….who, by the way, HAVEN’T WON ANYTHING SINCE THEY GOT CAUGHT CHEATING

  90. jimjets says: May 5, 2012 6:43 AM

AND YES, I know, the Jets have only won once, 43 years ago…..I know, I know, you win.

At least when they did win, they DIDN’T F’IN CHEAT

  91. reed20fence says: May 5, 2012 7:06 AM

So far there are 76 or so comments, overwhelmingly by those who think the Patriots’ championships are tainted, all by what common sense would dictate are football fans.

That is all Harbaugh was pointing out. Even if he personally thinks the Patriots did not cheat, the popular perception is out there after the ”scandal.”

There’s your asterisk. Anyone who teaches a kid about the NFL (which will be the vast majority) will be witness and perpetuate the story of what they think went down.

Sometimes Charlie lets the Jersey boy in him out. I love him to death and still wish he were the Pats OC, but he probably shouldn’t have responded.

To the Pats fan who made that comment about the 2 NYG championships with BB as the DC, nice try. I’ve tried that on a few moronic NYG fans and they have yet to respond with anything coherent.

  98. grandsonofcoach says: May 5, 2012 10:59 AM

Weis’ comments are kind of a joke. There is only one reason people break the established rules–it’s to gain an advantage and win more games than they normally might have. Otherwise why do it…for fun??Whether it helped or not is kind of a ridiculous argument. His team tried to win more games by videotaping other teams signals.

  99. gizzmonic says: May 5, 2012 11:05 AM

Honet to god… why do people even care? It’s not like the NFL will take away the titles or anything else for that matter. If we start with the *’s its only a matter of a few decades untill ALL teams will have some trivial footnote attatched to there titles, making the whole league look irrelivant. Re-post from danallen2 on last week’s Mangini article. Genius. I hope you are a lawyer.

    danallen2 says:

    As a Patriots fan, I don’t blame Mangini because…
    1. The Patriots had informed the NFL that Mangini was taping in Foxboro the season before.

    2. This occurred after the NFL sent out the memo on taping.

    3. The NFL said that the Jets had permission (huh? permission to do something illegal? permission to cheat? what?) though the Patriots said no one gave them permission, and the NFL couldn’t produce a name. Goodell and Ray Anderson (former Jets employees) sure had a laugh over that one.

    4. Why would I blame Mangini when the Patriots did the exact same thing to Mangini? The lesson the
Patriots thought they had learned was that the league memo was not to be taken seriously.

Now, here are some common misconceptions about Spygate:

    1. The Patriots taped the Rams SB practice. That was shown to be a lie by a disgruntled employee, and even if it weren’t, the Rams are on record as saying they only walked through red zone plays during that practice. The only 2 times the Rams made it to the red zone during the SB they scored TDs, so whatever the Patriots learned by taping (refuted of course) didn’t work.

    2. The videotapes helped the Patriots’ defense. People actually still think this. The taping was of defensive signals, not offensive signals.

    3. Taping helped them win all three Super Bowls. Taping could have helped them win the first one since they actually played the Rams that year and had tape on them. But the other Super Bowls were won without tape. In fact, the last time the Patriots played the Panthers, for instance, was three years prior when George Seifert was still the coach. The Patriots had no tape on the Panthers.

3A. OK, the Patriots might have had tape on the Panthers if someone sent them the coaches’ tape of
prior games, in which you can see the signals on the sidelines. You can steal signals that way. But it’s just a PITA because you have to then sync them up with the time of the play. This is why it’s better to tape signals by devoting a camera to it, so that the signals relate to the play and the time in the game.

    4. It’s illegal to videotape signals. NO, it’s not. You can videotape them as long as you’re in an enclosure of at least 2 walls. The Patriots were taping them at field level. BFD.

    Bogus arguments:

    1. The Patriots offense was only successful during those years because of taping. Anyone see the stats against the Rams? They were not pretty. if anything, the Patriots offense has been stellar since Spygate, it’s a record-breaking offense now. Before, it was mediocre.

    2. Patriots can win a Super Bowl without tape. They already have. They couldn’t possibly have illegal tape on the Panthers, for instance.
