Getty ImagesFullback Ovie Mughelli’s five-year run in Atlanta has come to an end.
The Falcons announced Tuesday that they have released Mughelli. The writing for the move was on the wall when the team drafted Bradie Ewing in the fifth round of the draft. Mughelli was due to make $3 million in 2012, the final year of a six-year deal he signed after leaving the Ravens, and that’s a lot for a fullback.
Mughelli was a good one for the Falcons, though. He made two Pro Bowls and was performing at a high level last season before he wound up on injured reserve with a torn MCL halfway through the season. The presence of Ewing, Mughelli’s salary and his injury combined to make it impossible to see a future for Mughelli in Atlanta.
There should be a training camp spot somewhere for Mughelli, although he’s probably not going to be guaranteed much more than that.

He will be missed. Very versatile, hard working, and professional. Good luck to you Mr. Mughelli.
I agree tdrw…class act and a helluva player. best to you OM!!
The last of a dying breed. I’d be surprised if this position still exists in 3 years. Also pretty crazy he almost lasted a whole 6 years on his contract, that’s how you can tell how solid he was.
We sure could use a guy like that in Houston.
Come on down!
You’ll be missed, Ovie. You were an unsung hero of our offense. Alas, we needed the cap space. Too bad. Good luck, man!
The Browns NEED to sign him , one of the best FB in the league right now.
If Dallas didn’t sign Vickers, which was a great pickup, Mughelli would have been very good as well. The Niners or Dolphins should pick him up
A Lions player went low on Ovie and took out his knee. The result was a season ending injury, getting replaced, and cut. The NFL can be a cruel league.
One of the very few Raven free agents that found success elsewhere. That in itself is pretty amazing since teams are always duped into signing Ozzie’s castoffs (looking at you New York Jets and Washington)
I could see the Buccaneers trying him out. They want to run the football and he was one of the best FB’s in the game.
Ovie, call Howie Roseman. Forreal.
Pro-Bowl fullback that will find work in the next few days. So many teams could use him.
I hope the Ram’s take a look at him. SJax could use a nice lead blocker
So much for the teams honoring contracts when they expect players to honor contracts.
I literally cringed when I read this. I liked him as a Falcon … and one of the few athlete’s I cared to listen to when they were interviewed. $3M was just to much especially coming off of that injury.
