Sanchez: Tebow is a backup QB first, then he’ll do other stuff

New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow arrives at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit in New York Reuters

It remains to be seen exactly what role Tim Tebow will end up having on the Jets this year, but Mark Sanchez thinks he has a good idea: Sanchez will start, Tebow will back him up, and as long as Sanchez is healthy, when Tebow gets on the field it will be doing “other stuff.”

Asked by reporters in the Jets’ locker room today whether there’s a quarterback competition, Sanchez said Tebow will prepare like the starter but will be the backup.

“I hope every backup quarterback wants the job of a starter,” Sanchez said. “That’s the way you have to prepare. I’ve been in those shoes in college, anticipating the game setting like I’m the starter, and then getting to the game and not playing. Fortunately for Tim, he has the ability to do other things and that’s why he’s on board. He’s a backup quarterback first, and then he’ll do plenty of other stuff.”

That “other stuff” will involve some snaps in the wildcat formation, possibly some playing time at other positions in the offense, and some work on special teams. But Tebow said he’s preparing as a quarterback in what he called “a very fun quarterback room.”

“We’re all just learning the same offense right now,” Tebow said. “I’m just doing whatever they want me to do. I’m just going out there and working hard right now.”

Mark, you’re also a backup QB.

  2. realskipbayless says: May 10, 2012 3:10 PM

The other stuff sanchez is talkin about is tebow taking his job.

  3. t2live says: May 10, 2012 3:12 PM

Sounds like Sanchez is putting Tebow in his place to me.

  4. careerender56 says: May 10, 2012 3:21 PM

Sure Sanchez, just keep telling yourself he is the backup, in reality he is the part-time starter.

this is hte first time Sanchez has been challenged with a back-up who can be a starter in this league, how he responds to hte competition will say a lot about his future in the NFL

Week 3: Sanchez gets the boot. Tebow leads the game winning drive.

  6. damaddhatter29 says: May 10, 2012 3:23 PM

Tebow will be starting by week 8. Then Sanchez will prepare like a starter but be the backup. He will not be coming in for the other stuff though.

  7. nflsucker says: May 10, 2012 3:24 PM

If the Jets continue to start Wayne Hunter at RT, they’d probably be better served by having Tebow behind center, because at least he can run for his life.

  8. mwatts1 says: May 10, 2012 3:26 PM

I love how Sanchez is speaking for Tebow and the coaching staff. Clearly management hasn’t notified Mark that Tim will be the starter in week 4.

  9. ErikW65 says: May 10, 2012 3:49 PM

Sanchez better play well enough for the Jets to win games or else the “other stuff” Tebow can do is going to include replacing him at QB.

  10. jacunn2000 says: May 10, 2012 4:15 PM

I don’t know why, but I want Sanchez to fail. Maybe it was the whole thing about when got his extension and said the money proved he was a great player. I don’t know, but I would kinda like to see Tebow take his place due to poor performance and then kill it on the field.

  11. jmagnet28 says: May 10, 2012 4:20 PM

Atta boy Mark! You just keep pounding that notion into your head and eventually you might even believe it.

  12. sbdt says: May 10, 2012 4:26 PM

If it weren’t for all the interviews and talking I’d have forgotten the Jets were in the league.

Highly doubt it, tebow is terrible, that Denver D won them those games, don’t be stunned because it took him 3-3/4 a game to put up a td…or sorry, 8 passes throughout a whole game, yawn.

  14. armoderate says: May 10, 2012 4:56 PM

If Sanchez throws as many picks as he did last year, he’ll know how it feels to be a backup QB in the NFL. My guess is that the Jets organization will be giving Sanchez a lot shorter leash this year and that’s why they traded for Tebow.

Tim is Laughing his butt off like yeah right whatever you say Mark Wink.

Both these starting backups made it to the post-season, exclusively, because the strong defenses. The fundamental difference between the two guys? The Denver players rallied around Tebone, and the Jets guys were quick to toss Sandchairs under the bus.

But other than that, you’re right.

  17. vincentbojackson says: May 10, 2012 5:09 PM

God hasn’t weighed in yet and I’m told he favors Tebow.

Not because of Tebow’s faith and devotion, but because he’s seen Sanchez play.

  18. cpo187 says: May 10, 2012 5:14 PM

    Poor, clueless Sanchez.

  19. nashwaakkidd says: May 10, 2012 5:14 PM

gotta be honest, i really don’t want either of these clowns at qb .one can’t pass and the other can’t win

  20. ohnothatguy says: May 10, 2012 5:15 PM

Always great to come on here and read the shots you guys throw at sanchez! Always makes me laugh! Thanks! I have never thought sanchez was worth the trade up to #5 & have always felt clemens could of took them there with that running game & that defense! For christ sake, do jets fan really believe it was sanchez that took them to back to back afc title games?!? If thats so trent dilfer was the reason why the ravens won the superbowl! For you jet fans who dont know history the ravens had the beat defense and a top 3 running game!! SOUND FAMILIAR!?!?! Cant wait to see the TEBOW RUN OUT THE TUNNEL with the starting offense and see stinkchese i mean sanchise lmfao sit there with his headset n clipboard! To bad shotty cant be there to see & finally walk up to rex & say about dam time! Lets see how bradford if healthy has a stafford type year thanks to shotty then all you dumb jets fans can finally see it wasnt his fault! Even better the jets thought they got the better qb that year in the draft!! Just like the chargers did in 98 lmao

  21. dawgs105 says: May 10, 2012 5:31 PM

The Jets QB situation reminds me a lot of the Redskins last year. Two backups competing for the starting job.

  22. Deb says: May 10, 2012 5:46 PM

So … it’s obscene to say the Jets had tension in their locker room last year and throwing Tebow into the mix hasn’t made things better? Did I miss something? Isn’t this article about Sanchez putting Tebow in his place? But we’re not allowed to suggest that implies tension in the locker room?

    Weird.

  23. bigbluefan1 says: May 10, 2012 6:27 PM

End of the first half and the the folks who go to jet game because they can get Giants tickets start chanting TEBOW TEBOW
Rex takes his head out of the bucket of slop he is eating and says Mark you sit out this half.

None of this really matters as there is only one Elite QB who plays in Giant Metlife Stadium and his name is Eli and he plays for the real local team not the B team

Rember Rex said on Christmas eve the game was going show who was the better team
Well we all saw it thanks rex

  24. gojets111111 says: May 10, 2012 6:44 PM

    enough is enough!

tebow is a running back nothing more

sanchez can take us to the superbowl
    needs protection!!!
    need Hill to be edwards

he is no rothelisberg but he is not going to be relaxed now

he is fighting for his job!!

  25. mancave001 says: May 10, 2012 6:53 PM

Does anyone else get the feeling that Sanchez is the only one on Earth who doesn’t know Tebow will be starting? What a dolt.

    -Mark Sanchez

good thing you have experience at being the backup….

IS it really appropriate for him to be saying ANYTHING about who’s playing where?

  27. kegowhisky says: May 10, 2012 8:03 PM

Since when does Sanchez get a vote? He needs to shut up and work on playing well enough to keep Tebow as a backup.

  28. rwmilli says: May 10, 2012 9:23 PM

    @dougydougdoug

Nice point, I got nothing against tebone, I just can’t stand how nobody gives a defense that held teams to an unbelievably low amount of points isn’t getting credit, it’s clear tebow is a great guy, and he definitely has the ethic to get guys behind him, but until that passing game of his improves I just can’t see him getting the nod. Wish both guys the best, and my opinions no way bias seeing as how I’m an eagles fan and could care less about the jets

Without a running game and miserable (for the most part) offensive line play, didn’t Mark Sanchez account for 32 touch downs last season?

  30. domehead says: May 10, 2012 11:44 PM

Oh yeah…This is gonna work out really well.

  31. dannythebisforbeast says: May 11, 2012 12:28 AM

Sanchez better learn how to do ” other stuff”. Otherwise might not see him on the field after about….I’ll say week 7

there were some times in his fourth year that eli still looked pretty bad. just hope that sanchez has his head on straight for the tough times that are coming this season. hope too that this great opportunity for moving forward doesn’t pass because the oline doesn’t cut it.

  33. IainRWB says: May 11, 2012 4:57 AM

Good to see Mark talking with confidence. Let’s hope he can play with confidence as well.

  34. jimjets says: May 11, 2012 8:29 PM

i guess florio and his wig keep taking my posts off….

    again, as I said….

    sanchez playoffs – 4-2

    florio – no record

    florio’s wig – no record

the rest of you jet haters….f off

  35. billhicks666 says: May 11, 2012 10:46 PM

The bottom line is the Jets now have two starting QBs who both suck.

  36. pisano says: May 12, 2012 12:29 AM

Neither of these two should be starting for an NFL team. Both are career back-ups, but are too vain to admit it.

  37. dynaco says: May 12, 2012 6:45 PM

Sanchez/Tebow combo accounts for a 5-3 post season stat. How well they prepare with Tony will be the key. They will not be a quick strike offense but they can win some close games if other teams let them hang around.
