On Wednesday’s PFT Live, Browns G.M. Tom Heckert addressed the perception that the team doesn’t have a high-end receiver.
To the extent that Plaxico Burress is still a high-end receiver, the Browns aren’t interested. At least not yet.
“We haven’t talked about Plax right now,” coach Pat Shurmur said Friday, via comments distributed by the team.
The inclusion of “right now” implies that, eventually, the Browns could be interested.
Look for the Browns to try to develop the guys they have. Heckert expressed on PFT Live hope that Greg Little will improve on his rookie season, in which he had 61 catches as a rookie despite not playing in 2010 and having no offseason program in 2011. "[W]e don’t have the big, number one star, I guess, media-wise,” Heckert said. “But we do think we’re a solid group and do think we can get better and we’ve added Travis Benjamin this year, so we’ll have to wait and see.”
Burress played for the Jets in 2011, after being out of football for more than two years due to a prison term resulting from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. He has generated marginal interest in free agency.
