Tim Hightower will rejoin the Redskins

Lost in the mountains in March, running back Tim Hightower has found his way back to the NFL.

Specifically, to the Redskins.

Per multiple reports (including one from Kelli Johnson of CSNWashington.com), Hightower has rejoined the Redskins, two months to the day after free agency opened.

The Cardinals traded Hightower to the Redskins last July, after he was displaced by then-rookie Ryan Williams in Arizona.  He rushed for 321 yards in five starts with the Redskins before tearing an ACL.

Hightower and Roy Helu could compete for the starting tailback job.  The biggest question is whether and to what extent Hightower’s knee injury has healed.

The ability to pick up blitzes could be the tiebreaker in this one, given that the Redskins will be looking to give rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III as much support — and protection — as possible.

Wish Timmy nothing but the best! I was hoping somehow he rejoined the Cards this year.

Damn right!!!! That is a heck of a backfield if his recovery goes well. I liked what I saw out of him last season before he was hurt. Im sure Helu gets the majority regardless. HTTR

They sure love washed up running backs that were good 5 years ago. Just hope their time machine is ready before the season starts.

  4. wrathofgodzilla says: May 13, 2012 10:10 PM

No way Hightower starts. Helu will be in there at least 75-85% of the time with Hightower as a change of pace.

    Welcome back Tim! HTTR!

The Redskins are going to the playoffs, brother.

Not sure what he thought he’d find in FA.

  8. ImproperRedskin says: May 13, 2012 11:06 PM

Not so sure Helu gets 75% of the carries. Hightower is a helluva blocker.

    @greengoblin

Why do you even make a comment? Hightower is entering his 5th year and the other 2 were rookies last year.

You have no clue about the team and just showed everyone how stupid you are

Tim Hightower wasn’t in the league 5 years ago. He’s only 25 years old. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Try sticking to stuff you might have insight on…like fingerpainting….moron.

You sure are ignorant. Hightower is 25 years old. Helu (23) and Royster (24) are entering their 2nd year.

    Welcome back Timmy!!

Washed up? He was drafted by the Cardinals in 2008, 5th rd. He was injured, not washed up. 5 years ago he was at the University of Richmond. This is the type of uninformed crap generated on this site. Just an incredible idiot!!

  13. thunderskins007 says: May 13, 2012 11:25 PM

love this signing. he was running strong and not turning the ball over as he was prone to do in arizona. was sad to see him get hurt hope he is healthy and sure he signed for the cheap and love the trio of backs we have now. hightower is a local kid and grew up a redskin fan. can’t hurt to have that on the team. hope he has a good year. HAIL.

This will surely put the Redskins over the top! You know you hit rock bottom when you have to sign back with the skins. Washington, Where careers go to die!

Love this move… The man earned every yard last year… He’s gonna have a short shelf life like Marion Barber… But he earned my respect as a runner!

Good Signing. When he’s healthy…Hightower has “IT”

Tim has always been part of the solution not the problem. A good re-signing for the Newskins.

Dude you are the biggest retard ever, last year the Redskins had 2 rookie running backs starting the majority of the season. Roy Helu & Evan Royster

  20. fantom21 says: May 14, 2012 12:57 AM

Even though Hightower played well for us before he got injured, I wouldn’t have been too worried if we didn’t find a way to bring him back since we just drafted Alfred Morris out of FAU. Morris is a third down back who is a helluva blocker and has the potential to be the thunder to Helu’s lightning.

Hightower will be 26 when the season starts.

Helu, a rookie was the leading rusher last season.2010 was 24 year old Ryan Torrain.
2009 was 28 year old Portis..who they got rid of.

    What are you talking about???

  22. duncanthecat says: May 14, 2012 1:12 AM

The added depth on the OL probably had a bit to do with his decision.

  23. skinsfan24 says: May 14, 2012 1:25 AM

Great re-sign. He looked good throughout preseason n first 4 games! I cant wait for season to begin!

  24. footballfanman says: May 14, 2012 1:56 AM

greengoblin another Redskins hater. Deal with it pal we’ve got RGIII and you wish your team did. Redskins have turned a new leaf.

  25. truthassassin says: May 14, 2012 2:38 AM

Backfield was good last year and will be good this year, though they should give the bulk of the carries to Helu if they actually want a playmaker out there… regardless, this team will rise (and fall) with RG3

  26. anhdazman says: May 14, 2012 2:54 AM

Helu should be the clear cut starter. Hightower will be a good complimentary RB. This day and age, you need multiple guys that can handle the RB position.
Now, Shanahan needs to wise up and concentrate on these two guys. Get a system and stick with it. If he adds another RB or two to the mix, it’ll prevent the offense from being a cohesive unit. Linemen blocks better when they know RBs tendencies and preferences.

  27. skinsmania44 says: May 14, 2012 5:15 AM

    @footballfanman

Skins fan here. Agree with you but please do not use “leaf” with our skins in any way shape or form. Bad omen when we just picked up a high profile rookie QB

  28. swizope82 says: May 14, 2012 6:41 AM

Why is it that the name “Evan Royster” hasn’t been mentioned in this story? Kid had some pretty damn good numbers spelling Helu at the end of the season… Loving the backfield going into the season… HTTR

  29. tonyromoisterrible says: May 14, 2012 6:46 AM

It is all coming together for plenty of competition this summer. Can not wait for training camp and this season. Should be plenty of fun.

Hoping the skins can improve to 8-8. Maybe playoff bound next year.

    HTTR!!!!!

  30. mcconnellrules says: May 14, 2012 7:56 AM

Tim Hightower is a BEAST at blocking, great re-sign in my opinion. Not to mention he was tearing it up before his ACL tore… he can only help the skins.

Their top 3 RBs include Roy Helu and Evan Royster, both of whom were ROOKIES last year.

Your comment makes no sense. Update the script.

  32. craighartmanjr says: May 14, 2012 9:04 AM

After watching our 6th rounder Alfred Morris’ highlights on youtube I thought he was a beast and that we didn’t need Hightower back, maybe Shanahan wasn’t that impressed during the rookie minicamp. What do you think?

  33. elmaxoh says: May 14, 2012 11:35 AM

I hope he wears the number 39 like he did in pre season.

  34. tiggerblood says: May 16, 2012 12:52 AM

I believe the reference of washed up was directed towards Larry Johnson and Willie Parker. Or maybe every washed up player signing since Snyder owned the team not just running backs. Best signing in Snyder era London Fletcher. Although Deion Sanders was pretty good for the Skins. LOL I’m sure I’ll be “corrected” on this comment.

  35. craighartmanjr says: May 16, 2012 2:56 AM

Yeah, you do have a point, we did sign Shaun Alexander too!!! But the good thing is that we have 3 young RB’s (Helu, Royster & Morris) and a young veteran who we can take a chance on in Hightower.

  36. tiggerblood says: May 16, 2012 2:27 PM

Really the Redskins could be that team that sneaks up on people this year their defense was improved last year with olb’s orakpo and Kerrigan the return of Jarvis Jenkins can only help. Look out for the skins this year I say!
