Raiders to try out free agent fullback Owen Schmitt

Liz Mathews of 710 ESPN Seattle reports that free agent fullback Owen Schmitt will try out for the Oakland Raiders this week.

Perhaps best known for a pre-game ritual consisting of repeated self-inflicted head wounds, Schmitt was a fifth-round pick out of West Virginia in 2008, drafted by the Seahawks. Schmitt appeared in all 16 games with the Eagles last season, carrying the football four times for six yards.

In Oakland, exclusive rights free agent fullback Marcel Reece has yet to sign his one-year tender. The Raiders’ tryout of Schmitt may be an attempt to put pressure on Reece.

Schmitt also has background with new Oakland offensive coordinator Greg Knapp from their days together in Seattle.

nothing wrong with quality depth, but reece is the “x” factor for the raiders.

    Gotta keep Reece

  3. liljere24 says: May 14, 2012 9:23 PM

    Andy Reid says sign him.

  4. latchbeam says: May 14, 2012 9:25 PM

    He is bad ass!!!

  5. raiderinva says: May 14, 2012 9:30 PM

That is awesome that he is in Oakland.

Pure attitude and nastiness at its best. At WVU Owen had a bad habit of breaking his metal face mask on the opponents head. I believe he was known as “The Runaway Beer Truck”.

I love this addition to the silver and black, it’s about time……

Wasn’t he diagnosed with concussion like symptoms after a pre-game ritual?

  7. steviekthr3e says: May 14, 2012 9:39 PM

Good depth. But Reece should be a priority. He’s a freak athlete.

I never understood why more plays weren’t made to get the ball in Reece’s hands last season. He out-runs linebackers and out-muscles d-backs.

    * flip flop that

  9. jacksaysfu says: May 14, 2012 9:42 PM

As a Eagles fans im disappointed Owen won’t be back in Philly . Schmitt isn’t the most talented or athletic fullback in the league but he makes up for it with heart & passion . Good luck Owen Schmitt , you deserve a roster spot !

  10. fumblenuts says: May 14, 2012 9:44 PM

He’ll knock the Schmitt outta someone!!

  11. jacksaysfu says: May 14, 2012 9:49 PM

Owen Schmitt brings old school football back . Every team needs hardcore players like O.S on their team .

  12. raiderapologist says: May 14, 2012 9:54 PM

Reece doesn’t really have any options if he wants to play this season, but Schmitt won’t scare him.

Another loser for the Raiders! Perfect!

  14. christopher525 says: May 14, 2012 10:03 PM

New age Jon Ritchie for Oakland, if Reece stays, keep this guy as a blocker. Reminds me of Cory Schlesinger.

he should fit right in with Oakland.

Winning game seven in Memphis and still worries about the fullback position, Blake Griffin is amazing!

  17. oldbyrd says: May 14, 2012 11:33 PM

As a Eagles fan I hate to loose him. Darn good pass catcher and blocker. Question….who replaces him at fullback?

Like clockwork, PFT writes an article about the Raiders and theres “pantherpro” trying to be witty taking a cheap shot at them. I know the Raiders haven’t done much lately but this is a franchise with three Lombardi trophies, I forget how many trophies do the Panthers have? I don’t know of too many Raider fans that troll the Panther articles, what’s your obsession anyways? Closet fan or what?…

Schmitt is all football. He can catch, block, run, and is way faster on the football field than in the Underoo Olympics.

He has ‘tweener size too at 6’3″/265lbs.

And- he’ll play ST like it’s the SB on every play.

    He can even LS.

Nice to see that there is still a use for hard nosed blocking backs in the NFL , like Schmitt and Hynoski , who’s with the Giants .

Reece will sign. He has little leverage…if any.

A perfect RAIDER, this guy is tenacious. Hopefully he can contribute, if he makes the team.

Big Reg will make sure to take care of Reece. He is arguably the 2nd or 3rd best offensive option, he needs to be in camp.

  25. mullman7675 says: May 15, 2012 2:01 AM

@pantherpro: Your obsession with the RAIDERS is evident. Your inane rants are laughable. Whoever slapped you around in life must have been wearing RAIDERS gear. Lol- looking forward to your next post you troll of the highest order.

    O. Schmitt !

  27. justwinbaby4life says: May 15, 2012 2:50 AM

    Hey Pantherpro,

I love that you like to hate! It shows how much of a dumbass you are for talking smack. Your team sucks ass. The panthers couldn’t finish when they had the talent. No Lombardi to show off.

Keep hating on the Raiders. Even are horrible seasons are more exciting than your best ones.

  28. marshawnlynchlookslikepredator says: May 15, 2012 6:25 AM

If this means Reece gets an expanded role in the offense, I am all for it. Schmitt is a solid fullback, and an old school Raider type player. Should be a win-win, not to sound like Carson Palmer.

  29. iggleinva says: May 15, 2012 8:00 AM

He is a beast, good bloccking. Not used in philly much as a runner

  30. nbcwantsitsmoneyback says: May 15, 2012 9:32 AM

If your pregame ritual is self inflicted head wounds can you still sue the league for post concussion syndrome?

I can’t tell if this is a comment or an indictment of the American education system?

  32. raiderrob21 says: May 15, 2012 9:40 AM

Thanks for the info Philly fans. Knew nothing about the guy. Sounds like a good back up plan if Reece continues to play hardball. We really need to get Reece a new contract, but at the right price. In Reggie we trust.

And they keep dragging in garbage no one else wants.

    To the cellar!!!
