Raiders to try out free agent fullback Owen Schmitt

Liz Mathews of 710 ESPN Seattle reports that free agent fullback Owen Schmitt will try out for the Oakland Raiders this week.

Perhaps best known for a pre-game ritual consisting of repeated self-inflicted head wounds, Schmitt was a fifth-round pick out of West Virginia in 2008, drafted by the Seahawks. Schmitt appeared in all 16 games with the Eagles last season, carrying the football four times for six yards.

In Oakland, exclusive rights free agent fullback Marcel Reece has yet to sign his one-year tender. The Raiders’ tryout of Schmitt may be an attempt to put pressure on Reece.

Schmitt also has background with new Oakland offensive coordinator Greg Knapp from their days together in Seattle.
