Reggie Bush wants to lead league in rushing

There’s been so much talk about quarterbacks in Miami this offseason that we haven’t paid much attention to the team’s running backs.

One of those backs is coming off the best season of his career. Reggie Bush ran for a career-high 1,086 yards and did a lot to reverse the conclusion that he wasn’t capable of being a featured back in the NFL. Bush was durable (he played 15 games for just the second time in his career) and effective (averaging five yards per carry) in the role for Miami last year. He’s got his heart set on doing an even better job next season.

“I want the rushing title,” said Bush, via Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “This offseason I’ve been working towards that goal. Just being effective like I was this past season. Every time I rush the ball I want four yards. I’m keeping my focus simple and small, but at same time helping my team progress.”

Bush had the least carries and highest yards per carry of any of the top 15 rushers in the league last season, a formula that could bode well for his dream if he was able to be as effective with a higher workload. The problem is that the Dolphins are talking about moving in a different direction.

They’ve got Daniel Thomas, Steve Slaton and rookie Lamar Miller on the roster right now to use as alternative ball carriers in the running game and that means Bush won’t be the kind of workhorse Maurice Jones-Drew was on his way to the rushing title last year. The Dolphins have also talked about making more use of Bush as a receiver, something that would likely impact the number of carries he gets over the course of the year.

That might make Bush less likely to win the rushing title, but it could also make him a more productive part of the offense in his second year with Miami.

C’mon Reggie… Philbin is planning to use you more creatively in the passing game, so you won’t get this opportunity. Don’t turn into a diva!

This isn’t the PAC-12 anymore, Bush.

  5. yelix says: May 14, 2012 1:34 PM

I would hope that a football player would want to be the best in the league at his position.

  6. egreen4590 says: May 14, 2012 1:34 PM

Really? Which RB doesn’t want to do that?

While Super Bowl Champion Reggie Bush has gotten a lot of flack because he hasn’t lived up to the expectations stoked from his college career, he had an excellent season last year and I think he could do well with more carries. The good thing for the Phins’ is that they have a lot of other backs that can keep Bush healthy, which definitely helps since that team is going to need all the assistance that it can get.

I don’t think Reggie Bush gets enough credit for NOT being the Diva everyone thought he was going to be. Seems to be humble and puts in work, its nice to see things finally turning around for him.

“Every time I rush the ball I want four yards.” He already does that on third and five’s! Maybe he should shoot for 16 games per season first.

  26. jckid21 says: May 14, 2012 2:07 PM

…….And I want to have sex with kim kardashian. Both ain’t happening!

  29. dobberdubinsky says: May 14, 2012 2:15 PM

Bush says, “Every time I rush the ball I want four yards. I’m keeping my focus simple and small, but at same time helping my team progress.”’

AD and others say, “Every time I rush the ball I want to take it to the house.”

Even though I give props to Bush for rejuvenating his career, this is why he will never lead the league in rushing.

  30. nathan702nelson says: May 14, 2012 2:17 PM

Adrian Peterson will get more yards with one knee.

  31. morgan420 says: May 14, 2012 2:32 PM

He rushed for more yards with less carriers then any running back from #15 on. Thats great, and thats a great come back from where he was id keep using him again

  32. vavikingfan says: May 14, 2012 2:36 PM

I’m sure that Reggie would like to lead the league in rushing and I would like a billion dollars.

  33. 305phinphan says: May 14, 2012 2:40 PM

I remember last offseason and these same haters were calling the Dolphins organization fools if they expect Reggie Bush to be an every down back.

Well he proved his critics wrong last year and with his limited amount of carries. I believe Reggie Bush is very capable of meeting that goal if he stays healthy and can get 50-60 more carries.

    Prove um wrong again Reggie!!!

  34. spfripp says: May 14, 2012 2:40 PM

I really don’t know why many of you are responding in a negative way to him wanting to lead the league. Last year he said he wanted to be a leader on the team, people laughed at him and what did he do? Became a team captain. He said he is able to run between tackles, people laughed at him at that as well. Again, proved people wrong. He said he could last an entire season and once more people doubted him. Well do I need to go on? I had some doubts about him before the season began last year. I learned my lesson. Don’t know why so many of you haven’t. IMO he has all the talent and will power to lead the league in rushing and the only thing that will stop him is his coaches. I would also like to remind everyone that a good chunk of his 1000 yard rushing came at the second half of the season.

  35. butthatmakestoomuchsense says: May 14, 2012 2:45 PM

I love how when Reggie Bush expresses his ambitions (admirable ones to boot) people feel the need to belittle him over it.

  36. jagsfanugh says: May 14, 2012 2:45 PM

Baby steps. You barely made it over 1k yards, so good luck with that.

  37. db105 says: May 14, 2012 2:54 PM

Bush also wants to lead the NFL in unsportsmanlike penalties. He seems to make himself look like a selfish azz whenever he scores a TD by drawing that 15 yard penalty.

  38. adamwest101 says: May 14, 2012 2:57 PM

reggie bush averaged 5 yards every time he ran the football in 2011. obviously, the dolphins running game with bush isn’t broke. don’t try to fix it. give him the ball in 2012.

  39. peezwizz says: May 14, 2012 2:58 PM

    He better start rushing now.

  41. reticarga says: May 14, 2012 3:11 PM

  42. bostonhasrealhockey says: May 14, 2012 3:31 PM

If they loose 10 games and he wins the rushing title is that a succesfull season?
    What a team player.

  43. billsfan27 says: May 14, 2012 3:40 PM

Better hurry up and sign Matt Leinart. Every extra yard counts…

  44. The Prophet says: May 14, 2012 3:56 PM

He won’t even have the most rushing yards in Florida! Someone shut this guy’s yap …

  45. bdawkins20 says: May 14, 2012 4:30 PM

lol good one reggie. lol…all talk no production like always. the dbs will have more yardage in return yards

  46. emaimo80 says: May 14, 2012 7:41 PM

GM Jeff Ireland is doing everything possible to prove that he is the worst GM in the history of the NFL, and Reggie Bush is doing everything he can to be the best running back in the NFL (he already won a heisman trophy, national championship, and a super bowl ring)! And you are gonna talk crap about Reggie? He just had a 1000 yard season! There are a couple of good players left on the phins that Ireland hasn’t scared away or traded for peanuts and Reggie proved last year that he is one of them. This guy has proven critics wrong before so before you make a dumb comment and knock a player consider the facts and realize how hard it is to accomplish what is already on his resume!

  47. mrtwister1 says: May 14, 2012 11:36 PM

Good luck but they are all going to have to beat out Lammar Miller.

  48. nathanbetz91 says: May 15, 2012 12:52 AM

Good luck with that…I had the utmost faith in Reggie bush the day he got drafted and now 7 years later I cant say he’s lived up to expectations

  49. nremi85 says: May 16, 2012 11:15 AM

Reggie’s a great back n n.o. he never got the chance just like he couldn’t run for a thousand but he did….and he gets good buns lol
