Getty ImagesOn the field, the Lions eventually will have to find a way to extend the pre-rookie wage scale contracts of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and quarterback Matthew Stafford. Off the field, they need to extend the contract of the man who has had a key role in turning around the team’s on-field product.
Coach Jim Schwartz is entering the final year of his contract. But, as Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press reports, Schwartz wouldn’t provide an update on the situation.
Why not? “I don’t talk about my contract, that’s why,” Schwartz said.
Schwartz was then asked whether a new contract was completed. “I don’t talk about my contract,” he reiterated.
Few head coaches become free agents the way players do, deliberately finishing out their contracts and then taking a new job with another team. The risk in that situation is significant; there’s a chance no other team will want the head coach. That risk becomes even greater in light of the reality that “lame duck” coaches have a harder time getting the most out of the locker room, making it harder to end the contract on a high note.
Chances are, then, that Schwartz will get a new deal. Unless he wants to go to a team that would pay him a lot more money — and unless he’s damn confident that such an opportunity will be there come January 2013.
