Welker is in a good spot, and this situation is exactly what the franchise tags brings. Pats can't pay him big going into his mid-30's, certainly not long term... but he'll sign the tag and get big money this year, and a decent contract from someone (maybe the Pats, maybe not) next year. Or, just maybe, they'll come to a compromise solution and sign him before the season to a deal.

It's all good... this is a business, and I'm okay with how both sides have handled the situation.

Also... I know most of you don't know this, but Bozo is a Niners fan. Imagine that. Lakers, Yankees, Niners. So, like some Steelers fans, his panties are bunched up because the Pats are now included in the "dynasties" list. Hence, his reply above regarding the other teams with more titles, etc.

Bozo is huge frontrunner crybaby that roots for 90's-era dynasties exclusively (surprise) and you can find his hypocritical comments all over every Boston team's boards, including recent classless comments after the B's lost, and on the Seau suicide announcements. You are arguing with a really sad, lonely dude with some kind of abandonment issues every time you reply to him.

Instead of replying, just enjoy watching the Lakers implode and put their tail between their legs (again) in the playoffs.

"Although it’s a little surprising to hear Welker sounding like Terrell Owens’ publicist, "

Not if you actually, follow the NFL.

Welker is nothing if not sarcastic and satirical, after Rexies foot fetish came to the fore, Wes gave a pre-game press conference talking about how the Pats were going to "put there best foot forward", were confident they "wouldnt be defeated", etc.

This is Wes taking a dig at TO.

I am by no means a professional football player making millions of dollars like Wes welker is. But what I do know is you can't hold out for so long then say you'll agree to something before the season starts because now the team knows that when the deadline comes you'll take whatever they give you because they know you want to play.you have to do what Chris Johnson did and holdout till as long as humanely possible so the Teams know you're not messing around

For all you Welker haters out there that say he is a product of Tom Brady. Welker had 111 receptions in 2008 when Brady went down witha torn ACL in week 1. 111 receptions with a QB in Matt Cassell who hadn't started since High School. Welker is right below the elite receivers in Calvin Johnson and Larry Fritzgerald.

I'm not a pats fan, in fact I strongly dislike them.
But for all of you saying he is over rated/average/product of a great QB, I'd like to just point out some stats while he was in Miami.

With Joey Harrington throwing him the ball, he still had 67 receptions for 687 yards and one touchdown.

He isn't the same as he was 5 years ago, but he is still one of the best slot receivers out there.

I love it. People here cry when Drew Brees won’t take his franchise offer and report to camp while others cry when Walker happily accepts it.

-------------------------------------------------

Objectively Drew Brees is under-valued at the franchise tag ($16M?). Wes Welker, great slot reciever in the Patriot system ... over-valued @ $9.5M

That doesn't mean he doesn't deserve it for out playing his contract handily ... but being objective, I can't imagine NE wanting to pay $9.5M to a slot reciever.

As well, I'm a bit bearish on how many productive years WW has ... being a pinball coming across the middle all the time has to be taking a toll.

Sign the tender Wes and get to work !

Bozo...serious question here..I'm sure most of the regs here have noticed as well. Do you have a flesh crush on Brady? Seriously. Do YOU want to be in the shower with him grabbing your ankles? Just curious because you constantly bring up being gay with Brady, in the locker room, bending over, grabbinbg ankles etc...
Is this a subconcious fantasy that perhaps you haven't addressed conciously yet? Could THIS be the reason you target the Patriots/Brady? To get this attention from him?
It's just you hang around the "ankle grabbing" conversations OFTEN.
Just saying.

I love it when some bozos show how little they know about football.

Welker is a good guy but he’s no fool. He’s not holding out because between this year’s $9.5 million and next years signing bonus he will make far more guaranteed in two years than he ever could with a long term deal this year alone.

If he signed a long term deal now some bozo would lash out with insults simply because he’s a very small person jealous with the Patriots’ success.

People like that have no credibilty and simply provide the rest of us with comic relief.

__
Comic relief was provided in the last two Super Bowls that the Pats appeared in. The collective hilarity that was the result of the SB in 2008 was only surpasssed by the laughs gained from the result of the SB this past season. And there are plenty of fans of other teams (Steelers, Packers, Niners, Cowboys and the like) that harbor no jealousy whatsoever of your team, idiot...given that those teams all have more titles (and titles that weren't gained by cheating like the Pats' titles were gotten). No need to be jealous of that at all.

Makes complete sense--he wants a long-term deal and if he signed the tender then negotiations would be put off until next season. But, without a contract, if he gets injured with the team he can be cut. Even if he signs the tender and gets injured, the buyout on his contract would be a lot less. So, he stays home, the agents and admins keep working, and they get a deal done.
It's the only sensible thing to do.

Sign it Wes and stop crying. You benefit from the system and Brady..Plus you can say your the highest paid white receiver in NFL history…

----------------

How is he crying? I don't see it. Wanting a long term deal with guaranteed money that will exceed the 9.5 million is just business.

If he goes for the 9.5 million and gets injured it could be the end of the money for him.

Even if Welker got a third of the guaranteed money that Megatron got, that's still 20 million plus any salary he would earn if he didn't get cut.

It makes sense to hold out for the long term contract until it affects his paycheck.

Worst case he'll take the franchise money last minute and next year the Patriots won't be able to afford the WR franchise tag.

I love it. People here cry when Drew Brees won't take his franchise offer and report to camp while others cry when Walker happily accepts it.

There are positives and negatives for the player(s) when it comes to being tagged. In Welker's case he gets a nice salary for 2012 while practically being guaranteed the right to become an RFA after the season, unless the Patriots want to pay him close to $12 M for 2013.

Barring injury of course, but it's a good gamble.

Next year Welker is going to be 32 years old. He's not going to get much in terms of a signing bonus, or a contract.

Honestly, if money is what he's after, he's going to have to leave the Patriots. There's no way the Pats can invest in Welker's twilight years when they have to also handle Hernandez and Gronkowski (who's gonna be baseball rich) on the offensive front.
