It has been said that a pro athlete gets paid to train and practice. Most of them would probably play on game day for nothing. Competetion is in the DNA. The point is every position on the team must be earned. Coach Sciano seems like a fair minded man. The best player will get the job but they will have to earn it on the practice field.

I still like Blount. Yeah he's not the best pass catcher or blocker, but those are things that can be worked on. Everyone seems to forget he ran for almost 1000 yards in like 10 starts his rookie year. He had a bad year last year, but so did the whole team. I don't get why Freeman gets a free pass for the season because the team brought him down, but Blount was supposed to be a pro bowler. I still say should Blount should start with Martin as the 3rd down/goaline back. Martin is the rookie, make him earn his playing time.

Ok, there are things that people should know about the Blount object. We all know what he is at face value which is a slow learning-seemingly one demensional back with anger issues. What many people may not realize is that this guy has issues figuring out which shoe goes on which foot.

Complicated blocking schemes will be impossible for this guy to figure out. He has a handler that has to constantly monitior his actions so that he doesn't do something stupid (again). He is a physical beast but just doesn't get it and sadly, I don't think he comes with the ability to get it. Mentally, it just doesn't click, and because of that, Tampa did what they had to do in their backfield.

Tons of upside. Didn't help him coming from that spread garbage at Oregon. The fumbling had to get better, but it looks like a lot of it happens after he's 3 or 4 defenders deep and fighting for more yards. Gotta pass protect though. If he can get better Bucs will have formidable running game.

Blount would have been taken in the first three rounds of the draft if he wouldn't have punched the guy on Boise. He was a very good back at Oregon. Also, Blount's problem is ball security and effectiveness on 3rd downs, not a lack of vision.

Think about that for a second. My favorite team has never won a Superbowl, yours has won 6 – And we’ve both hoisted the same amount of Lombardi Trophies, worn the same amount of SB Rings and received the same amount in bonuses.

Crazy.

__
Even more crazy...the team that most New Englanders root for has hoisted half as many of those Lombardis, yet they all pretend as if they somehow had anything to do with the successes of those mercenary players.

Crazy indeed.

“I had the idea they were going to draft another guy,” Blount said. “Them drafting a running back might be what I needed to become an every down back.”

So if they had drafted some other position, you were going to sit on your can and not work hard? If I were a Bucs fan, this attitude would worry me.

This team still puts the "fun" in dysfunctional.

Mark it down - Bucs start 0-1 as Cam Newton shreds them. Again.

Blount should definitely still be the number one back. He is a big bruising back with good feet and nice agility. He can run, through over and around most defenders. Now that signed Nicks he will be able to get to the second level more and that will he a problem. Martin is good but he will be the third down back.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Um, no. Blount regularly gets stopped for losses or no gain, has very little agility in terms of being able to change direction, and his one ability is "slam into people and hope they fall off", which is great when it works, but it also leads to his fumbling. He's not shifty in any way, and he's just yet another strong, one-cut runner.

Also, and most importantly, running the ball doesn't matter like it used to, and backs have to contribute in the passing game both as receivers and blockers. Blount doesn't catch well, and he is absolutely, utterly, and terrifyingly awful as a blocker. He can't read a blitz at all and simply cannot block anybody. He spent loads of time sitting on the bench last year, because the Bucs were way behind and they had to pass, so he got benched for Kregg Lumpkin.

If you want to be a number one back, "benched for Kregg Lumpkin" should probably not appear on your resume.

Think about that for a second. My favorite team has never won a Superbowl, yours has won 6 - And we've both hoisted the same amount of Lombardi Trophies, worn the same amount of SB Rings and received the same amount in bonuses.

What is he supposed to say? This is the obvious response. He has to have the mindset that he can get better and keep his starting job, and if/when he loses it, he needs to have the mindset of working even harder to win it back.
