Drew Brees “frustrated” Saints aren’t making his contract a priority

2012_NFL_Free_Agent_Quarterback_Rankings_Drew_Brees_Saints Getty Images

Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been waiting all offseason to get a long-term contract done, and he’s getting sick of waiting.

Brees said in an interview with WWL radio that he’s growing increasingly frustrated with what he sees as the Saints dragging their feet in getting a new agreement worked out.

“This is a big time for our team, especially when you look at what’s happened in this offseason, missing our head coach, Sean Payton,” Brees said. “There should be a sense of urgency and yet it seems like there’s not.”

In any deal it takes two sides to negotiate, and Brees says he feels like he and his agent are trying harder to get the deal completed than the Saints are.

“We’ve reached out on a number of occasions and at times I’ve been frustrated by the lack of response,” Brees said.

From the Saints’ perspective, they know that they have him as their exclusive franchise player and therefore don’t have to worry about him signing with another team. The Saints may figure that they can just hold the line and eventually Brees will give in and accept the one-year franchise tender, or accept a long-term deal worth less money than Brees thinks he deserves.

But Brees says that, contrary to the claims of Saints owner Tom Benson about the sides being close, the Saints haven’t offered him anything in the ballpark of the kind of contract he’d be willing to sign.

“Maybe not as close as people would be led to believe,” Brees said. “I would say that the numbers that have been thrown around by ESPN and some of these other places, at times, have been pretty heavily inflated.”

Brees says he has always done everything asked of him by the Saints, and now it’s time for the Saints to reward his loyalty with a “reasonable” and “appropriate” contract, which he says the Saints so far haven’t offered him.

“It’s been extremely frustrating for me,” Brees said. “The negotiation shouldn’t have been this difficult.”

Drew Brees is needy for information.

  2. jpb12 says: May 16, 2012 6:44 PM

He negotiated with Goodell all last summer. How hard could Benson be?

Benson won’t have to pay Payton $8M this year. Why not get a deal done? Seems like Brees wants to make a point and be paid more than anyone in the NFL

  3. bobulated says: May 16, 2012 6:44 PM

Perhaps when the season rolls around the Saints can leave an unsigned Brees an empty seat on the bus and at meetings as a sentimental gesture.

  4. butthatmakestoomuchsense says: May 16, 2012 6:45 PM

If you’re going to post about Brees “whining”, guess what? You only read the headline, not the column.

Drew Brees is whining again? Shocking.

  6. captainhook11 says: May 16, 2012 6:48 PM

Pay the man! Before Brees got there we were calling them the “Aints” and also no one has ever had an impact on the city of new orleans like Brees has had. They can’t lose that.

Who makes the first lame and old “Drew Brees wants an explanation” joke?

  10. jwayne111 says: May 16, 2012 6:52 PM

I will really be disappointed in Brees if he caves to Saints. He deserves it! N.O. management will of course try and turn local fans against him for leverage…B.S. – Don’t do it for Sean. Get your money and security for your family.

Where would Saints be without Brees ? Hello ? Pay the Man!

  11. SeenThisB4 says: May 16, 2012 6:52 PM

I heard that interview, and Brees never once said that the Saints haven’t offered him anything in the ballpark of the kind of contract he’d be willing to sign. He did, however say: that the numbers that have been thrown around by ESPN and some of these other places, at times, have been pretty heavily inflated.

Maybe the media should stick to reporting the truth, and stop putting words into other people’s mouths.

Brees will get his long term contract and retire a Saint.

With all that’s going on with the organization, and you would think they want to make the only guy that gives them a good chance to win happy. I’m also suprised the senate hasn’t voted on this to urge the saints to get done.

  14. texaswriter2011 says: May 16, 2012 6:53 PM

Could it be that the Saints senior management are so shell-shocked that they can’t figure out how to do anything? It’s beginning to look like Sean Payton was the brains of the operation.

  28. dapell says: May 16, 2012 7:00 PM

I just get the feeling that Brees is lying when he says he knew nothing about bounties. The Saints organization covered for him wanting to maintain his rep, and now they expect him to do them a favor in return.

  29. horntoady says: May 16, 2012 7:00 PM

Sorry Drew…the team spent all the money on bounty hunters.

  30. 4thqtrsaint says: May 16, 2012 7:01 PM

First, I’ll ignore all the idiots who want to bash Brees, just because Saint bashing is fashionable. Anyone bashing him probably has a crappy to questionable QB. If he was your team’s QB, you’d sell your wife to get him signed.

Now that that’s out of the way… Of all the screw-ups my team has had over the years (and there are A LOT), including this year, not getting Brees signed would be the biggest screw-up ever. All he’s done is be the best QB any team could ask for plus being great for the community. If they don’t get this done, I will have to invent new profanities. If I have to watch Chase Daniels lead us to the NFC South cellar, I may go postal.

You can call him greedy and you will. But if you were one of the top 2 or 3 of whatever line of work your in, and your boss was offering you to be paid like the 10th, I wouldn’t call it greedy. I’d call it earned.

  31. krashie21 says: May 16, 2012 7:05 PM

  34. toolkien says: May 16, 2012 7:09 PM

I’ve got an informant on the inside, a mole if you will, that says the situation is pretty hairy right now, and while Brees is angry he’ll just have to turn the other cheek…

  35. bobulated says: May 16, 2012 7:10 PM

Speaking as a Falcons fan; Please Saints, by all means continue to screw the future HOF QB that fell into your laps because of this exact same situation occurring to him in San Diego. I’m sure he doesn’t remember getting franchised, hurt and dumped by the Chargers. He’s going to give in any day now. Loomis is a genius for playing hardball! ;)

  37. musicman495 says: May 16, 2012 7:10 PM

This is a travesty. Benson just bought an NBA franchise for cash, for crying out loud. What’s the problem? Pay the man.

  38. mthead55 says: May 16, 2012 7:12 PM

Why are people bashing Bree’s? Who has played better? Who has dedicated more time and effort to a team than he has? He did the “team first” thing for the last three years. Why is maximizing your earnings at the peak of your productivity a bad thing? Benson has held the state of Louisiana hostage for the last 6 years with threats to move the team if he didn’t get all kinds of tax dollars for the stadium and tax breaks as well. Figure in the 100’s of millions of dollars that has poured into New Orleans because of Drew Brees’ and the Saints just with NFL related activities and events and you quickly see Drew is worth far more than he is asking. Saints’ management is a greedy, thankless bunch. They have been promising Brees (and the fans) that Drew would get a top dollar contract for two years. Now they are showing their true interest.

  39. scytherius says: May 16, 2012 7:12 PM

I am always amazed by that small cadre of idiots that think that players should just be grateful they play at all and play for the “good of the team”. Those idiots also think that business only runs one way, i.e. management.

It runs both ways. This is nothing but a business. It may be a business we enjoy but no one, not mismanagement not labor, owes you squat.

  40. jaydog76 says: May 16, 2012 7:12 PM

  41. goldenblurb says: May 16, 2012 7:13 PM

  43. maggas99 says: May 16, 2012 7:14 PM

Saints are playing with karma here. The guy helped turn around the franchise. He’s posted crazy numbers over the last five years. Thy keep this up and they’ll be The Aints again sooner than a tourist can get shaken down on Bourbon Street.

  44. ripster65 says: May 16, 2012 7:15 PM

Brees said. “There should be a sense of urgency and yet it seems like there’s not.”…to give me a crapload of money. I do believe he’s worth it, but to put it like that? Is he high on himself or what? If money’s the matter then why bother, just go somewhere that will pay it on your terms.

  45. ar1888 says: May 16, 2012 7:17 PM

I think he should take the season off just to show the Saints how much he means to the franchise. They will be almost as bad as the Colts without Manning.

  46. darthsaint says: May 16, 2012 7:19 PM

Ugly business this can be. Saints can franchise Brees for the next two years at a lower level (16m vs 20+m) than what he would make with a large contract. It really is about the business side of this. The team knows he doesn’t sit at home instead of taking 16m to play a game he loves.

As for loyalty, the Saints showed a fair amount of loyalty when they gave a QB off a completely torn shoulder who only two teams even looked at in Free Agency based on that injury, a 6 year 60 million contract. He earned every penny, no doubt about it.

When he was in San Diego, he was an average QB with promise. You can say that about half the QBs in this league. He grew into one of the best. But I am sure the Saints believe part of that growth, has to do with the players and system they surrounded him with.

I hope Drew retires a Saint. I hope the team comes to an agreement that makes all parties happy. But my loyalty is always with the organization. I am a Saints fan before I am a Drew Brees fan. And that is true of every REAL Who Dat out there.

  47. jschwanny says: May 16, 2012 7:20 PM

Brees is whining. He wants the Saints to negotiate and to meet his demands, and he is “frustrated” that they have not. The Saints have the franchise tender on the table, and they don’t need to be in any hurry to offer any more. This is the system Brees, in all his brilliance, helped negotiate. He should quit crying, sign the tender and play football. He can call Wes Welker to see how that is done.

  48. bearsstillsuck says: May 16, 2012 7:21 PM

  49. billsfan1 says: May 16, 2012 7:27 PM

If the Saints let Brees go, they will fall back into another 40 years of Division 3 calibur football. Peyton is a good coach, no doubt; but i am not sure they do what they have done the past 7 years without him. He single handedly revived the city after Katrina…. Why is this even debated. Sign him. If not, there are about 27 other teams that would gladly take him off your hands..
With Peyton out for the year, who the hell else is gonna carry this team? Joe Vitt? yea ok!

    @ darthsaint,

    Great post!

I have 0 problem with a guy wanting to be compensated at the level their performance deserves. I also have 0 tolerance for hearing any complaints about their contract/negotiations. Whether they are right or wrong and regardless of the side that does it (mgmt. or player) all it really amounts to is pandering to the fans/media etc. Just handle your business and keep comments bland/vague/positive. The parties involved, which are the only ones who count, know the truth, whatever it is. No side looks better for conducting negotiations in the media.

I’m a saints fan and this is the dumbest statement I’ve ever heard.

    1. He just finished a 60 million dollar contract so to say the saints don’t want to pay him is wrong, they stepped up when no one else would.

    2. He has a franchise tag so he’ll play for the saints or nobody this year.

    3. the saints offered him a contract last year that would have made him the highest paid player in the league and he turned it down.

I’m growing tired of hearing him saying He’s all about the team. Tom Condon is his agent and he negotiates his contracts with his next big deal in mind for the other quarterbacks he represents.

  57. mojomowen says: May 16, 2012 8:31 PM

If the Saints do not sign Brees to a long-term deal prior to July 16th — and if Alex Smith fails to deliver the next super bowl for the 49ers — Drew will be wearing scarlet and gold in 2013. Place yer bets.

  58. marcg1957 says: May 16, 2012 8:34 PM

  59. indyspeedo says: May 16, 2012 8:39 PM

It’s amazing to me that Drew Brees is not being characterized as a greedy Swamp Boy because he wants paid. Peyton Manning wanted paid and he has 4 MVP awards and Super Bowl but everybody jumped on him that he was Greedy. I agree Drew needs paid because of what he has done for the city and franchise just as PM should have. Don’t get too greedy though Drew.

  60. purpleguy says: May 16, 2012 8:40 PM

  62. egomaniac247 says: May 16, 2012 8:50 PM

I don’t care what kind of person Brees is or isn’t, the fact is that without him, the Saints are automatically competing for 4th in that division.

The Falcons are a perinnially solid regular season team and the Panthers have their stock arrow pointed upward.

I can’t fathom why on earth the Saints leadership would want to play with fire like this. I don’t care if I had to release Marques Colston or another name player to free up cap room, Brees should be their # 1 priority for having on that team. Without him they are in the dumpster.

Again, I don’t care what type of personality he has….whether it’s good or bad, the dude has been absolutely on fire for the past 3-4 seasons and is the face of your franchise.

  63. bucfandango says: May 16, 2012 9:04 PM

I love drew brees, but let’s be 100% honest here. He is not getting younger, and these guys have to start to realize at some point, that 20 million a year does absolutely nothing to help your team. Trust me, as a colts fan, I’ve seen first hand what happens when you tie up that much money in one player. If it’s truly about winning, you might want to think about the team. If making 15-17 million a year isn’t enough to feed your family, then I feel sorry for you. He deserves a long term deal, but how much is he really asking for? You have to put the team first at this point, and to surround your team with good talent, you might want to help them out. But it’s not me, and i just hope that they can get something worked out. Quit being a politician drew. Do what’s right in your heart.

Am I the only one who thinks Loomis just might have a little something on his plate right now? They will get to Drew when they are ready. Drew stop being such an arrogant a$$.

  86. bigguy79 says: May 16, 2012 11:47 PM

Last summer he said he was tired of the retired players whining about the new CBA – look who is whining now. Boo hoo

  87. whatchutalkinabouthillis says: May 17, 2012 12:04 AM

I think the Saints have more pressing issues right now. Its not like his contract is up on in a week. He needs to be less selfish. The glow from the Superbowl has worn off, he needs to remember hes just a regular QB, difficult to replace, but not impossible.

  88. 6thsense79 says: May 17, 2012 12:20 AM

All these tough guys on the internet telling Brees to quite whining and sign the contract are in fact idiots.

    1. Brees was a pro bowl QB before he arrived in New Orleans so I’m not sure where the notion that he was an average QB in San Diego came from. Maybe his first 2 or 3 years in San Diego but certaintly not his last 2 years when things clicked. He had a QB rating of 104 in 2004 playing for San Diego good for 3rd best in the league.

    2. Secondly Brees has no reason to be grateful for the Saints taking a “risk” signing him for $60 million dollars because he more than paid them back by outperforming that contract on the field and bringing the Saints their first super bowl. The Saints have made much more money off Brees than they’ve paid for his services. Besides if Brees didn’t pan out the team would have either forced him to renegotiate his contract to a lower salary or cut him and not pay him the rest of his $60 million contract so I fail to see what great risk the Saints took. Around the end of the same season Brees first signed with the Saints the Dolphins tried to force Daunte Culppeper to reduce his $50+ million contract scheduled to end in 2013 after only 1 season with the team and when he refused they cut him and voided the remaining balance on the contract. If Brees didn’t work out for the Saints the same would have been done to him. Again what risk did the Saints or any NFL organization take? These contracts aren’t guaranteed so you don’t get stuck with a Barry Zito (Baseball) or Eddie Curry (Basketball) albotros of a contract.

    3. If Brees isn’t signed before the season starts it will be so damn funny to see the reactions of tough guy saints fans crying on this site.

  89. ikoikofinanay says: May 17, 2012 12:43 AM

philwauke I’m afraid your ignorance is showing. You CAN’T be a Saints fan and NOT support Drew’s effort to be paid commensurate with his talents. He is arguably the best QB in the league at this time. He should be paid accordingly. And more importantly he should be paid NOW. We need this fine leader on the field for OTAs.

  90. transam7816 says: May 17, 2012 12:57 AM

Let me tell you why this is happening. Drew Brees is getting old and the FO doesn’t want to offer a contract that could backfire on the organization. The only problem is that Drew Brees still has quite a bit left in the tank, and he knows it too. And this is why Brees is going to ultimately get what he wants. The Saints aren’t going to get a better QB than Brees anytime soon. This is the closest they will be to sniffing another championship.

  91. ikoikofinanay says: May 17, 2012 1:00 AM

billhicks666 I’m a Saints fan who knows we don’t have a competitive team without Drew Brees. You CAN’T be a fan and celebrate making stupid decisions like not respecting the one who brought us the Lombardi.

You yokels who are criticizing the man’s right to provide a future for his family when he never quibbled about playing when he was under paid since 2009 don’t know business. He trusted the organization to make good on their promise to pay him in his new contract. That time is NOW.

In the upcoming season he will have more responsibility than ever before. He needs to be paid accordingly.

I’ll say it again: you can’t be a fan and NOT support Drew Brees.

  92. fmwarner says: May 17, 2012 1:11 AM

    Important Note:

Just because a guy makes 100x your salary does not mean he isn’t underpaid.

  93. pierrepoint1 says: May 17, 2012 1:14 AM

Brees needs to force the Saints hand. Tell them if there isn’t a deal by a set date, he won’t play this year.

The Saints have no leverage in these negotiations. Brees can afford to sit out a year, can the Saints afford him to sit out a year?

  94. dobberdubinsky says: May 17, 2012 1:23 AM

Just a quick piece of advice here, don’t forget to cut mouth holes in your paper bags once Brees leaves Taints fans!

  95. whodatgirl1 says: May 17, 2012 1:47 AM

I love this group thinking amongst the haters. Hating the Saints and their Saints is so en vogue right now that I guess if you didn’t do it, you would be unpopular and not have any friends.

First, you say he is an idiot for saying “bounties” and “pay-for-performance” are two different things–something that the NFL said were 2 different things in the statement that errupted your hate. So you’re mad at him for restating the info? Then, you hate the Saints and are sick seeing stories about them; yet, you click on the stories and have to sign-in to leave a comment. Did someone force your hand? To add, the “needs an explanation” phrase has been so overused that it is already cliché.

Finally, the people claiming to be Saints fans, their sincerity should be questioned. To yelp at Drew Brees like this makes you just as bad the haters.

  96. jluns275 says: May 17, 2012 4:28 AM

    Excellent!

  97. bangitfootball says: May 17, 2012 6:54 AM

Brees isnt the player or person I thought he was 2 years ago.

After major arm surgery when many teams thought he was washed up, his arm was ravaged the Saints took a HUGE chance and gave him a big contract with 10 million dollar guaranteed .

    How quickly he forgot.

  98. jg725 says: May 17, 2012 6:58 AM

A true “team guy” as he always tries to make himself out to be – would understand that maybe, just maybe, the saints have have a few other things to deal with this off-season.
He will get his contract at some point – he should stop whinning and realize that he is not exactly getting “cheated” at 9 million per year until then.

Brees is showing the true phony that he really is

  99. bangitfootball says: May 17, 2012 7:01 AM

Sorry that was 20 million guaranteed, 6 year 60 million deal. Pretty generous for a team to give to a guy with a untested mangled shoulder coming straight from major surgery.

  100. chalkruz1989 says: May 17, 2012 7:54 AM

I predicted this would occur but not too sure of who will make out on top if Drew Brees leaves town. The Saints have surrounded Brees with such an explosive group that almost every quarterback in the NFL would be envious of. The brass in New Orleans has the thought process that they are not going to overspend on Brees when there are definitely younger and capable quarterbacks that could come in a make a difference. Brees is not Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, his offense is built for scoring, not build around the quarterback.

There, I fixed that for you. You’re welcome.

Drew seems a little old for this, but maybe his Dad should give him the “life’s not always fair son” speech.

Benson owes Drew an explanation. Amazing how much your image of someone can change in a short period of time. I realize that Benson is low down, but Brees should realize that the rest of us don’t really like to hear millionaires crying, especially when we’re taking pay cuts and he’s feeling insulted by $8 Million a year…

I just don’t feel ya Drew.

  103. dryzzt23 says: May 17, 2012 9:19 AM

The whole bounty thing never made me embarrassed to be a Saint fan. Years and years of mediocrity have never made me embarrassed to be a Saint fan. This……this is embarrassing. Think of how simple a PR move this would be for the Saints, to sign the guy. I can’t remember the last time I popped online and saw ‘good’ Saints news. Sign the man.

  106. havok82 says: May 17, 2012 10:02 AM

As a Pats fan, I still think they need to pay the man here. He’s made them relevant. Without him, they would be a mediocre to bad team. In all honesty, he has said some stupid things in the offseason around the bountygate stuff, but he has earned a payday.

  107. m2karateman says: May 17, 2012 10:10 AM

Believe me, I think Drew Brees is an elite QB in the league, and deserves to be paid as such. But the points people are making about the Saints having taken a chance on Brees are 100% correct. He was paid very well, and has been able to make even more money outside of football due to the team taking that chance on him.
All that said, Brees IS a “me-first” type of person. Remember during the lockout last season, he was one of the selfish players looking to sue the league so as to be able to make his money. He wasn’t representing all the players in that instance, he was representing himself.
If Brees would learn to shut his yap and not let things play out in the public or media, maybe the team would be a little more ready to deal in good faith. He hasn’t helped their image with his denial of the bounty program, even after Williams and others admitted to its existence. And to say he knew nothing about it because he didn’t play defense is absolute crap. What, teammates don’t talk to each other? He was hailed as the “team leader”, so his denial of knowing about the bounty program is an outright lie, and further tarnishes his image and that of the Saints.

  108. jagsfanugh says: May 17, 2012 10:11 AM

Drew, MJD and all the other players being ME ME ME should all be fired and guess what…the NFL will go on and in 5 years both of those players(and all other ME ME ME players) will be history.

  109. dukemarc says: May 17, 2012 10:40 AM

That “whoosh” sound you keep hearing Saints fans, is Chase Daniels missing the broad side of a barn, over and over again.

Be interesting to see how good Brees is without Payton calling the plays. It’s no coincidence that the two best play calling coaches have the most prolific passers in football. Can you say system QBs?

Speaking as a Falcons fan; Please Saints, by all means continue to screw the future HOF QB that fell into your laps because of this exact same situation occurring to him in San Diego. I’m sure he doesn’t remember getting franchised, hurt and dumped by the Chargers. He’s going to give in any day now. Loomis is a genius for playing hardball! ;)
    =====================================================
You are right on the money with those comments bobulated even though they are done out of selfishness.
The exact same scenario played itself out in San Diego in 2005 when the Chargers offered him a 5 year $50 million dollar contract with a base salary of $2 million a year and heavily ladened with performance incentives. He was injured that year after being franchised for $8 mil a year. He has on occasion alluded to that incident in an oblique way and hinted he’d never play under those conditions again without the security of a long term contract. Brees is what, 33? This is his last go-around
It’s not greed and I can’t say I blame him for wanting that long term security at this point in time.
