Speaking as a Falcons fan; Please Saints, by all means continue to screw the future HOF QB that fell into your laps because of this exact same situation occurring to him in San Diego. I’m sure he doesn’t remember getting franchised, hurt and dumped by the Chargers. He’s going to give in any day now. Loomis is a genius for playing hardball! ;)
=====================================================
You are right on the money with those comments bobulated even though they are done out of selfishness.
The exact same scenario played itself out in San Diego in 2005 when the Chargers offered him a 5 year $50 million dollar contract with a base salary of $2 million a year and heavily ladened with performance incentives. He was injured that year after being franchised for $8 mil a year. He has on occasion alluded to that incident in an oblique way and hinted he'd never play under those conditions again without the security of a long term contract. Brees is what, 33? This is his last go-around
It's not greed and I can't say I blame him for wanting that long term security at this point in time.

Believe me, I think Drew Brees is an elite QB in the league, and deserves to be paid as such. But the points people are making about the Saints having taken a chance on Brees are 100% correct. He was paid very well, and has been able to make even more money outside of football due to the team taking that chance on him.
All that said, Brees IS a "me-first" type of person. Remember during the lockout last season, he was one of the selfish players looking to sue the league so as to be able to make his money. He wasn't representing all the players in that instance, he was representing himself.
If Brees would learn to shut his yap and not let things play out in the public or media, maybe the team would be a little more ready to deal in good faith. He hasn't helped their image with his denial of the bounty program, even after Williams and others admitted to its existence. And to say he knew nothing about it because he didn't play defense is absolute crap. What, teammates don't talk to each other? He was hailed as the "team leader", so his denial of knowing about the bounty program is an outright lie, and further tarnishes his image and that of the Saints.

Drew seems a little old for this, but maybe his Dad should give him the "life's not always fair son" speech.

Benson owes Drew an explanation. Amazing how much your image of someone can change in a short period of time. I realize that Benson is low down, but Brees should realize that the rest of us don't really like to hear millionaires crying, especially when we're taking pay cuts and he's feeling insulted by $8 Million a year...

I love this group thinking amongst the haters. Hating the Saints* and their Saints* is so en vogue right now that I guess if you didn’t do it, you would be unpopular and not have any friends.

First, you say he is an idiot for saying “bounties” and “pay-for-performance” are two different things–something that the NFL said were 2 different things in the statement that errupted your hate. So you’re mad at him for restating the info? Then, you hate the Saints* and are sick seeing stories about them; yet, you click on the stories and have to sign-in to leave a comment. Did someone force your hand? To add, the “needs an explanation” phrase has been so overused that it is already cliché, (yet still funny).

Finally, the people claiming to be Saints* fans, their sincerity should be questioned. To yelp at Drew Brees like this makes you just as bad the haters.
============================

There, I fixed that for you. You're welcome.

I predicted this would occur but not too sure of who will make out on top if Drew Brees leaves town. The Saints have surrounded Brees with such an explosive group that almost every quarterback in the NFL would be envious of. The brass in New Orleans has the thought process that they are not going to overspend on Brees when there are definitely younger and capable quarterbacks that could come in a make a difference. Brees is not Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, his offense is built for scoring, not build around the quarterback.

How quickly he forgot.

I love this group thinking amongst the haters. Hating the Saints and their Saints is so en vogue right now that I guess if you didn't do it, you would be unpopular and not have any friends.

First, you say he is an idiot for saying "bounties" and "pay-for-performance" are two different things--something that the NFL said were 2 different things in the statement that errupted your hate. So you're mad at him for restating the info? Then, you hate the Saints and are sick seeing stories about them; yet, you click on the stories and have to sign-in to leave a comment. Did someone force your hand? To add, the "needs an explanation" phrase has been so overused that it is already cliché.

Finally, the people claiming to be Saints fans, their sincerity should be questioned. To yelp at Drew Brees like this makes you just as bad the haters.

Brees needs to force the Saints hand. Tell them if there isn't a deal by a set date, he won't play this year.

The Saints have no leverage in these negotiations. Brees can afford to sit out a year, can the Saints afford him to sit out a year?

billhicks666 I'm a Saints fan who knows we don't have a competitive team without Drew Brees. You CAN'T be a fan and celebrate making stupid decisions like not respecting the one who brought us the Lombardi.

You yokels who are criticizing the man's right to provide a future for his family when he never quibbled about playing when he was under paid since 2009 don't know business. He trusted the organization to make good on their promise to pay him in his new contract. That time is NOW.

In the upcoming season he will have more responsibility than ever before. He needs to be paid accordingly.

I'll say it again: you can't be a fan and NOT support Drew Brees.

Let me tell you why this is happening. Drew Brees is getting old and the FO doesn't want to offer a contract that could backfire on the organization. The only problem is that Drew Brees still has quite a bit left in the tank, and he knows it too. And this is why Brees is going to ultimately get what he wants. The Saints aren't going to get a better QB than Brees anytime soon. This is the closest they will be to sniffing another championship.

He is arguably the best QB in the league at this time. He should be paid accordingly. And more importantly he should be paid NOW. We need this fine leader on the field for OTAs.

All these tough guys on the internet telling Brees to quite whining and sign the contract are in fact idiots.

1. Brees was a pro bowl QB before he arrived in New Orleans so I'm not sure where the notion that he was an average QB in San Diego came from. Maybe his first 2 or 3 years in San Diego but certaintly not his last 2 years when things clicked. He had a QB rating of 104 in 2004 playing for San Diego good for 3rd best in the league.

2. Secondly Brees has no reason to be grateful for the Saints taking a "risk" signing him for $60 million dollars because he more than paid them back by outperforming that contract on the field and bringing the Saints their first super bowl. The Saints have made much more money off Brees than they've paid for his services. Besides if Brees didn't pan out the team would have either forced him to renegotiate his contract to a lower salary or cut him and not pay him the rest of his $60 million contract so I fail to see what great risk the Saints took. Around the end of the same season Brees first signed with the Saints the Dolphins tried to force Daunte Culppeper to reduce his $50+ million contract scheduled to end in 2013 after only 1 season with the team and when he refused they cut him and voided the remaining balance on the contract. If Brees didn't work out for the Saints the same would have been done to him. Again what risk did the Saints or any NFL organization take? These contracts aren't guaranteed so you don't get stuck with a Barry Zito (Baseball) or Eddie Curry (Basketball) albotros of a contract.

3. If Brees isn't signed before the season starts it will be so damn funny to see the reactions of tough guy saints fans crying on this site.

I think the Saints have more pressing issues right now. Its not like his contract is up on in a week. He needs to be less selfish. The glow from the Superbowl has worn off, he needs to remember hes just a regular QB, difficult to replace, but not impossible.
