Ryan Fitzpatrick likes Vince Young, says they won’t compete

Vince Young’s arrival in Buffalo is welcome news to starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who says Young will provide competition in training camp — but not for Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick said on SiriusXM NFL Radio that the benefit of having Young in the mix is to have a good competition for the backup spot, but that everyone has been clear that Fitzpatrick is the starter.

“Buddy Nix has been a guy that has been very fair to all his players, he’s been a guy who’s been trying to create a competitive atmosphere,” Fitzpatrick said, via BuffaloBills.com. “Buddy caught me in the hallway one day and said, ‘Look, we’re looking to create some competition for that number two spot at quarterback, we are bringing in Vince Young. We made him an offer. We’ll see if he comes. But just to let you know, obviously, you are our guy and we are just trying to get better at every position.’”

Fitzpatrick said he appreciates being told exactly what Young’s role is, and that he looks forward to working with Young.

“When people are upfront and honest with you and telling you what is going on, then it makes everything go much smoother,” Fitzpatrick said. “And for me, I’m a guy that’s got to go out there and perform, and I know that, just like every quarterback in the league knows that. I met Vince the other day and he seems like a really good guy.”

If Fitzpatrick can play like he did in the first half of 2011 in all of 2012, that team should be pretty good.

What a coincidence, that’s what the Bills told Rob Johnson about Doug Flutie.

Come on, Ryan. You gotta produce to not have to worry about it.

They should get along great. Just look what they have in common. Young got a 9 on his Wonderlic, while Fitzpatrick graduated from Harvard.

I honestly think Fitz is our guy for the next 5 years. If he has a full year of what he did the first half of last season I think the Bills win the division. I hate when people say its automatically the Patriots division. Even though I hate the Jets its going to be a 3 way competition for first place. Go Bills!

What, no competing Wonderlic scores? Gotta hand it to Fitzpatrick, knows a challenge when he sees one. Or doesn’t see one.

  15. dalucks says: May 16, 2012 5:56 PM

NFL Quarterback is the softest position in all of sports. They are a bunch of sensitive guys who do not want any competition or criticism but after one average season want to be paid top ten money. Why can’t Vince Young compete with Ryan Fitzpatrick especially when Vince has a better record in the NFL? I wish Ryan would focus more on winning instead of his feelings.

In actual playing time on the field itself, Fitz is actually behing Sanchez. It takes about 3 years, more or less , to grab the full extent of what a QB needs to see to be a quality entity in the NFL. Fitz is just about ripe at this point. Previously, he was still learning the position. This season should be a big step forward for Fitz. He’s more mature than most, smarter than all, and has the fire to win, with a coach who knows just how to use him. He’s the guy, no doubt. Another wr would help. Hopefully, Easley is the guy. I can see the Bills winning 12 games with the defense stacked the way it is now. Don’t for a second think Belichek isn’t concerned about what the Bills are doing. Rex would be too if he wasn’t so arrogant, but when his team gets stompped opening day, it will be an eye opener for him. The Pats finally got some true competition after the Jets fell apart. Can’t wait!!

The Bills don’t traditionally do well with QB controversy. As long as Fitzpatrick starts the season well he’ll be ok. A few bad starts and he could be in trouble though. Vince Young could still catch on. He wasn’t that bad and it was always his head that was the problem.

Also… Don’t forget last year was an anomoly. The short offseason had defenses on their heels. Once the season wore on Fitzpatrick wasn’t as effective. I admit lack of depth/injuries hurt Fitzpatrick also.

This year the really good offenses, like the Patriots and Green Bay will still move the ball, but Stevie Johnson and Ryan Fitzpatrick won’t have the same success.

  18. bullcharger says: May 16, 2012 6:29 PM

    catquick:

The Bills could win 12 games because the AFC East schedule is easy and the Bills schedule is possibly the easiest in the division getting Cleveland and KC while NE gets Baltimore and Denver and the Jets get the Steelers and San Diego.

Catching the 49ers and the Texans on the road is hard, so if you count those 2 and 2 division losses that would be 4.

    Not impossible.

If they don’t beat the Patriots once they won’t have a chance in the division though. I don’t think they can beat the Patriots this year. The Bills are better but so are the Patriots… by a lot. I do think the Bills will make the playoffs and who knows what can happen then.

  19. rg3savedc says: May 16, 2012 6:29 PM

Fitzpatrick was doodoo right after he got paid. The Bills just can’t catch a break

  20. tweeter75 says: May 16, 2012 6:36 PM

Obviously this won’t be a competition. Fitz is far and away the better quarterback. I respect Fitz, but saying he’s a far better QB doesn’t say much for Vince young.

  21. dlln147 says: May 16, 2012 6:44 PM

I think bullcharger forget to remind everyone that Fitzpatrick started going downhill when he cracked his ribs, you know after that Redskins beat down.

  22. dlln147 says: May 16, 2012 6:46 PM

And again bullcharger the Patriots have the easiest schedule in the NFL, the Bills are somewhere around 29, but the Patriots are first.

Can’t see VY challenging for anything after his performance with da Iggles last year. He was horrible.

Whats the excuse for going downhill the year before, and before that, and before that, etc. Has he had cracked ribs since 2005?

  26. sooner712 says: May 16, 2012 7:55 PM

Sorry Fitz, your attitude is not good. You just came off of three consecutive losing seasons. You need to worry. Young, even with the “low wonderlic scores” or “maturity issues” he don’t have one season of a losing record. Plus, if the coach have been wanting him since high school. You better not pull a Kerry Collins of 0-6 start!!!

Yes, because when VY filled in for Vick the team was 8-0 then VY lost the last eight games. That entire team was horrible last year!!!

  28. dlln147 says: May 16, 2012 9:03 PM

Last year was Fitz first full year of starting. They told him that he was the guy so he actually had confidence last season, coming into this season he can be assured that he is a long term commitment and needs to play like it. You think you could play better? Go play without cracked ribs and I guarantee you he is still a million times better.

  29. leftcoastnative says: May 16, 2012 9:23 PM

Fitzpatrick looks like he taking on the features (beard) etc. of Dan Fouts, including jersey #.

Now, if he only could play like Fouts, the Bills might have a chance!

  30. lennydpocketqb says: May 16, 2012 11:50 PM

VY had so much promise. This was a guy that everyone thought would be raising multiple trophies. Very sad to see him as a backup for one of the leagues bigger joke teams.

Fitz’s beard really is one of the most awesome entities in all of pro sports.

I think fitzpatrick is overratted. He’s not(brees, rodgers, payton, eli, brady) at all.
