In addition, Ben Watson had his best season the year AFTER he left New England.

Not in 2006, when Moss was with the Raiders. Gaffney had 11 receptions. Nor was Stallworth or Welker on that team in 2006. And Watson had a whopping 46 receptions that year.

Anyone with half a brain can see the football operations management of the contracts is a capital budget process – a three dimensional matrix where conditions are fed in and the money pretty much kachings based on the parameters. Sign a two year deal for X fits the matrix one way. Only want a one year deal, the matrix spits out a different answer. Cubits of estimated production per dollar over agreed upon duration Y. Let emotions and gut feel lead your decision making and your team sinks to the bottom.

Welker had business choice to sign his tender or not. He can sign a long term deal or not. It’s his decision. We live in America.

Welker’s body was going forward, while the pass was thrown behind him. Not many pros, much less college or high school guys are going to catch that one. But keep on kneeling at the feet of your hero Tammy Brady…too bad he doesn’t even know or care who you are.

Now they have a new # 1 wide receiver in Lloyd and now the Pats have more leverage against him.

Welker’s stats are part of the function of having Brady as his quarterback, part of being a slot receiver in the Pats offense (see Brown, Troy), and part being an outstanding WR. But I agree with you that his stats will drop in 2012 and the Patriots know that and THAT will drop his 2013 market value. With Lloyd, Gronk, and Hernandez, the wealth will be spread more evenly. It’s not as if Welker was going to get a long term deal in any case.

This is not rocket science! Please.

Pats want to pay $16M for two seasons. He signs for next season at $9.5M. I guess the following year would be $6.5M (less the guaranteed 20% increase) instead of the $8M per year they really want to pay. Got it?
