Looks like the saints are using the Indy playbook – thanks Brees, don’t let $80 million hit you in the ass on your way out. This season the saints will be lucky to win 7 games so why not drop down to 1-2 wins and get the #1 pick next year. Brees has one good season left in him but then it’s kurt warner territory – a solid QB that will get you 8-10 wins a year but no longer the SB – why spend $80 million for that when you can reload? It’s pro football. thanks for taking the hits but time to say hasta and move on.

And we thought seeing Peyton Manning say good-bye to the Colts would be the surprise of this off-season. Or maybe the other Payton’s yearlong suspension. But this thing with Brees just defies explanation.

Assuming Peyton is healthy, Brees is one of the four best quarterbacks in a league of 32. Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Brees–not necessarily in that order. He has the talent–and more important, the brains–to carry his team on his shoulders while the head coach is gone. He’s a proven commodity. He’s the key to keeping that team in contention for 2011.

What can they possibly be thinking?

Maybe this is a calculated gamble by Loomis.
Consider:
After all the mushy populist ‘team first’ rhetoric from Brees, he’s going to look like a complete jerk if he doesn’t show up to play for what most would consider a reasonable amount.
Or, even if Brees holds out for a little while, maybe there’s a chance that Chase Daniel shows a little promise a’la Kevin Kolb, Matt Schaub, or Matt Flynn, & the Saints get decent trade value for him next year.
I imagine they could use an extra draft pick or two to make up for that whole bounty punishment thing.

What you people’s fails to realize Drew Brees are 33 years of age Mickey Loomis and Tom Benson don’t mine giving Drew Brees what he wants but at Brees age its hard to decide what to give him. They are looking at millions of dollars what if Drew Brees get hurt and able to fulfil his Job this money being given away and not working for it. We don’t look at Tom Benson view and Mickey Loomis view they going to give him his contract but there will be some points to the contract. Read the kind of contract Peyton Manning has from Denver even if he get hurt he still making that 96 million I believe this the kind of contract Drew Brees want from the Saints this is a very important contract this not a regular contract. So Mickey Loomis and Tom Benson making sure they touch every corner before they call Drew Brees in to sign for this money contract Drew Brees has to be able to carry his load yes they is going to keep Brees and he will wear black and gold under Mickey Loomis and Tom Benson conditions.

Wait, are you trying to say that the Saints had a chance this offseason to keep Brees at his asking price and Carl Nicks at the price he demanded and got, not to mention keeping Colston and trying to improve a defense that everyone knows needs help, all while being fairly strapped for cap space, AND truly remain competitive? Come on! Sir, you doth protest too much. To stay competitive, the Saints really had no chance at signing Brees AND Carl Nicks this offseason at the salaries they wanted. Brees will probably get over 20 million a year. That’s 1/6th the salary cap. Add Carl Nicks’ price and that’s probably more than 2/7th’s the salary cap. All for 2 players. There was no way the Saints were keeping Brees and Nicks. Especially not will all the free agents they had and the problems they needed to try and fix. As a Saints fan, I think I can live with letting Nicks go, getting Grubs, and picking up Hawthorne and Lofton at LB.

I thought Daniel was pretty good with Mizzou. Was surprised by the lack of interest in him a few years back in the draft. Maybe this is his chance.

The Saints have next to nothing left in cap space right now. Jimmy Graham makes league minimum right now or close to it. He is going to command a high paying deal in the coming years for sure. The Saints got a bargain in Darren Sproles and I imagine he will want his contract restructured at some point. These things have to be considered when doing brees contract. I feel bad for Mickey Loomis although historically he has done a great job squeezing every last drop out of the salary cap.

Quit giving the Saints and their front office crap because they have tried to make Brees the highest paid player at the time and he decided it wasn’t good enough.

That story was leaked by the Saints, and came with no details. If they back loaded the contract five years from now so that he got little of the money up front, for example, he was smart to reject it, since Brees never would have seen that money. The Saints front office has screwed this up just as surely as they screwed up the negotiations with Carl Nicks, and the direct orders from the league and Tom Benson to stop whatever “pay for performance” system might have been going on. Loomis should have been fired.

It’s interesting to think Chase shaped this year’s draft. He declined the Redskins offer that would have placed him on the practice squad to go to the Saints practice squad. I wonder if he regrets that decision because he probably would have been the starting QB for the past two years in Washington. Chase in DC means RGIII would have gone elsewhere.

if i were the saints i would not overpay brees no matter how many fans and people in the media are banging the drums. if his salary is so high that it costs the saints two or three other good position players off the cap, then having brees at say a top three QB salary hurts the team as much as it helps it. pay him. pay him good. but don’t overpay.

Chase Daniel already has a pretty cool gig right now with virtually no risk—
Approximately $500,000 per year (assuming he’s at the league minimum) for holding a clipboard since Brees hasn’t been hurt since he came to the Saints.
That’s all he has to do, in addition to saying “Yeah” after all of Brees’ varied & sundry attempts at wit & wisdom concerning everything from the bounty punishments to NFLPA & contract matters.
