Rams aim for the NFL’s all-time sack record

New Orleans Saints v St. Louis Rams Getty Images

In 1984, Jeff Fisher played for the Chicago Bears team that set the NFL’s all-time record with 72 sacks in a season. Now Fisher wants to coach the team that breaks that record.

Fisher has been telling the defense that he wants at least 73 sacks this year, according to comments that defensive end Robert Quinn made to Ron Clements of CBS Sports.

Realistically, that’s not going to happen. The Rams, who had 39 sacks last year, may have a better pass rush with Fisher bringing in a new defense and the arrival of several new starters, but they’re not going to nearly double their sack output from a year ago.

For that matter, it’s not going to happen for any other team, either, because the game has changed since the Bears set the sack record in 1984. Offenses make protecting the quarterback a higher priority than ever before, and quarterbacks are getting rid of the ball more quickly than ever before. Last year the Vikings and Eagles needed just 50 sacks to tie for the league lead, and only one team in the last 10 years has had 60 sacks in a season (the 2006 Chargers, with 61). Getting 70 sacks in a season is just about impossible in today’s NFL.

Still, it’s nice that Fisher has big goals.

Fisher’s big goals = 9-7 and losing in the first game of the playoffs

Way to make yourself look like an idiot before the season even starts, Fisher.

Good job Fisher. He’s making sure the Rams will be competitive by the time they get back to LA in a few years. Go LA Rams!

Fisher called up his friend Gregg Williams for his proven system of financially based “motivational” incentives.

He’s acting like this is the first time he’s been a head coach….why weren’t you trying to get this sack record the 15 some years you were with the Titans???

  9. illiniftw says: May 19, 2012 8:13 AM

Meanwhile, the Bears offensive line is trying to make sure the Bears have the record for sacks on both sides of the ball

  10. mooser80 says: May 19, 2012 8:14 AM

It was a comment he made to his team not the media. I doubt it is something he is talking about it everyday in his defensive meetings. While its probably impossible to achieve I don’t see it making coach fisher looking like an idiot.

The Giants are only team that will break this record, and all other records. With their D-line, 20 sacks a game will not be unreasonable, and expected. They will win every game from here on out, no competition at all. All are welcome to jump on the bandwagon and ride it to eternal victory. All other fans are fools, and will be rooting for substandard teams that will be laid awaste of the mighty Giants dynasty. The Giants are the World Team.

  14. duanethomas says: May 19, 2012 8:29 AM

Unless they improve on their offensive line they might give up 73 sacks. Outside of Chris Long, where are the other 63 sacks going to come from?

Don’t worry about winning your division…… Worry about a stupid record.. Off to a great start already.. QB is a bust too..

Got to aim high. Sacking the QB is one of the few things the Rams have done well the last couple years. 72 is out of reach, but 45-50 sounds good to me.

  19. billsfan1 says: May 19, 2012 8:41 AM

maybe his first goal should have been getting better players for his pass rush.

Thank god they drafted Marcel Dareus last year and signed Mario Williams and Mark Anderson…oh wait , that wasnt them…

well at least they have Justin Tuck and Osi , grrrr not them either….

yeah maybe they should get those kind of players before setting such lofty goals

gregg williams was The d coordinator for a month. he still managed to get a bounty on the sack record

  22. guypatsfan says: May 19, 2012 8:54 AM

73 sacks? It can happen, but conditions have to be just right. Your defense has to be designed with emphasis on pressuring the QB to the detriment of everything else. You have to have the personnel to be able to do it. You have to have a lot of sacks against teams that don’t protect the QB well, and you have to have a fair number of those teams on your schedule. And they have to be able to stop the run.

  23. Stiller43 says: May 19, 2012 8:55 AM

They can just rush 8 guys every play…sure theyll get burned A LOT but theyll probably get a lot of sacks as well.

  24. jredshoes says: May 19, 2012 9:01 AM

    The ball sack record maybe

  25. stlsteelerfan says: May 19, 2012 9:03 AM

I’m not saying they’re going to get 72 sacks, but I will point out the Rams D is MUCH IMPROVED. Adding Brockers and Langford in the middle between 2 good DEs and with Laurinitus behind them, I think the Rams will actually be pretty stout against the run. With Finnegan and Landry at corner, they’ll be able to cover, too. With weaknesses at OLB and S, I’m not saying they’ll be impossible to move the ball against, but I think they’ll be tougher than people realize.

  26. otissor says: May 19, 2012 9:05 AM

There’s a better chance that Michael Jackson comes back to life then the Rams breaking any positive records next season.

  28. mikea311 says: May 19, 2012 9:15 AM

if the Giants in 2007 couldn’t do it with Tuck, Strahan, Osi and Kiwi

no way the rams do it this year.

  29. nflfollower says: May 19, 2012 9:16 AM

Maybe they should aim to just win a few more games. And not get awarded a top 5 draft pick. As a Lion’s fan, I know all about futility in the game of football, and this kind of talk would have annoyed the heck out of me coming off some of our seasons that were comparable to what the Rams did last year. Seriously, this should not be your aim St. Louis.

  30. iced107 says: May 19, 2012 9:20 AM

I see a significant improvement, but not 73 sacks. Maybe top 10 in the league, given the new players and competition level.

Chris Long + Quinn are great on the edges, they just needed help at DT last season…enter Brockers + Kendall Langford, which should provide a good interior push (especially with D-line coach Mike Wauffle).

Corner, which used to be a weakness – could now be a strength (BTW florio, they had 10 corners on IR last year, encase you forgot which is a big deal when it comes to pass rush.) The signing of Finnegan is big, plus Bradley Fletcher (Fletcher + Bartell were considered the best Corner tandem not long ago and allowed less than 60 percent competions between the two of them). Then add in Jenkins (steal of the draft IF keeps his head straight) and Trumain Johnson, both 1st round talents who dropped due to character concerns. 4 CB’s all at starting caliber, plus josh gordy was a great find last season and is still impressing.

Add in a d-line push, how dominant Long is, how great Quinn was in limited snaps (blocked field goal, 2 puns, 6 sacks when playing only pass rushing situations and special teams), and some DB’s that can actually cover? Yea, I expect a big jump…and top 5 or top 10 in sacks if the offense improves (which it should even with the new o-line coach, who was great with us before).

  31. rajbais says: May 19, 2012 9:25 AM

Can they get that many with all the rules favoring the quarterback???

  32. vikinganswer says: May 19, 2012 9:28 AM

Looks like Chris Long will have to shoot for 65 since nobody else has any talent

    ________________
Agreed. More importantly, Fisher doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would want to make himself look like an idiot. Whatever his lofty personal goal for the team may be, he is not going to share those comments with the media, or put any goal for the team on any sort of written record. Fisher should turn the rams around quickly, but it’s hard to imagine any Ryan-style Super Bowl bluster ever leaving his mouth.

The Ravens had exactly 60 sacks that same season.

Don’t you hate how the reporters can take a statement, twist it and make it seems worse than what it is. Im sure fisher is more concentrated on winning than an old record that probably wont ever be broken with all these rules to protect the QB.

  41. jdandcoke says: May 19, 2012 10:51 AM

everyone needs to calm down…..what fisher actually said was that he wants the rams to get 73 POINTS this season.

  42. andrejohnsonforpresident says: May 19, 2012 11:00 AM

  43. lolb23 says: May 19, 2012 11:20 AM

Oh ya, this will be easy. Bradford will get sacked at least that many times. I think they could realistically shoot for 85….what…? Oh, you meant the defense…ya, no.

  44. elrock7 says: May 19, 2012 11:27 AM
