Weatherford says his Sanchez comments were taken out of context

The talk-up-Tebow-talk-down-Sanchez tour expanded recently to include former Jets punter and current Giants punter Steve Weatherford.

Weatherford, appearing on the Cover Two podcast, questioned the maturity of Sanchez.

Since then, Weatherford has questioned the maturity of those who believe he was questioning the maturity of Sanchez.

In a stream of tweets posted after the podcast hit the fan, Weatherford insists his words were taken out of context, and that he didn’t “rip” Sanchez.  At one point, Weatherford “retweeted” (I really do despise that word) an observation from Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that what Weatherford said isn’t all that different from what people like G.M. Mike Tannenbaum have said.

So I listened to the Weatherford interview, and while Weatherford indeed praises Sanchez, calling him at one point “obviously the future of the franchise,” Weatherford said what he said about Sanchez and maturation.  Thus, while the ESPNNewYork.com headline that “Weatherford rips Sanchez” may have been a bit too strong, Weatherford definitely expressed criticism of the Jets starting quarterback.

Regardless of whether Weatherford didn’t think anyone would be paying attention to anything a punter had to say or that it really wasn’t anything all that controversial, he said what he said.  And what he said likely has something to do with the team’s decision to bring Tim Tebow to town, in the hopes that having a true threat to Sanchez’s job status will expedite the maturation process.

Why the hell were they interviewing a punter in the first place?

  2. sictransitchris says: May 19, 2012 12:30 PM

Why are we still talking about this?

  3. jason49er says: May 19, 2012 12:40 PM

If they really wanted Sanchez to think there was a threat to his job why in the blue hell would they give him that monster contract?

  4. broncfanor says: May 19, 2012 12:42 PM

Why not? The Jets have a new punt protector so it makes perfect sense.

basically, you cant say anything without the media having the opportunity to twist it. you can say 20 nice things about someone and ONE unflattering thing….and you can bet that the media will run with the one unflattering thing.

weatherford had a lot of good things to say about sanchez AND also said that he needs to become the leader of the jets, which he hasnt done yet. i dont see what the big deal is…EVERYONE has been saying the same thing about sanchez for a while now.

yeah youre right….its not like punting is a huge part of the game or anything….im sure you and i can go out and become punters right now if we wanted to.

in seriousness, id be willing to bet that the average punter/kicker has an IQ level about 30 points or so higher than the average football player, excluding QB’s. maybe theyre interviewed because they can provide somewhat intelligent answers to questions.

none of the writers on this site played pro football…but we all come here to read their articles, right? if they can provide intelligent introspection into the game, why cant a punter or a kicker??

Sanchez is a good quarterback. Stop bashing him.

    Dear Steve,

You just got your Super Bowl ring. You had one of the best performances any punter ever had in the Super Bowl. You made fairly benign comments about a teammate from your old team where the special teams coach didn’t think you were good enough to play for the Jets – a team that failed to even make the playoffs. Who cares if some Jets fans are upset that you spoke the truth? This is your year, man. Kick back and enjoy it. Flash them your ring and tell them if the Jets coaches had ANY idea what they were doing, you would still be on the team.

Dude, the Giants were a 9-7 team. They barely made the playoffs, themselves.

These Giants fans act as if they had some juggernaut team. They were 9-7! They were outscored during the regular season, for Christ’s sake.

They got lucky in a mediocre league.

  16. nypd1056 says: May 19, 2012 6:00 PM

So let me get this straight. The Falcons, Packers, 49ers and the Patriots were all MEDIOCRE TEAMS.
4 Super Bowls in 4 straight decades. NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE. GO BIG BLUE

“They got lucky in a mediocre league.”

This is why I LOVE Jets fans. You insult the team that just won it’s second Super Bowl in five years while you root for a team that hasn’t even been in the Super Bowl since 1969. If it’s a mediocre league, what does that say about an organization that can’t win a Championship in 43 years? You assclowns THINK you’re insulting us when all you’re really doing is mocking yourselves.

When Brady goes down and Mallett is the QB in New England, the Jets will only have the 3rd worst QB production in the East.
