Careful managing of Tim Tebow’s image hits Broadway

"Schiaparelli And Prada: Impossible Conversations" Costume Institute Gala Getty Images

We’ve been talking a lot about Tim Tebow’s image recently, from the way he’s portrayed in video games to the way his lawyers are zealously protecting his copyright by going after the makers of a T-shirt that doesn’t even have Tebow’s name or likeness on it. And now we have another story about the Tebow image, this one coming from a Broadway actress.

The actress is named Neka Zang, and she’s in the musical Rock of Ages on Broadway. According to TMZ, Tebow posed for a backstage picture with the Rock of Ages cast, but when Zang posted that picture on Twitter, she was asked to take it down.

“Well, Due to Tebow’s ‘image’ I was asked to remove the pic of him with us half dressed ladies. He does know we arn’t real strippers right?” Zang wrote on Twitter.

It’s not clear who actually asked Zang to remove the picture to protect Tebow’s image, but it’s an odd request: Tebow simply stood with four actresses, smiling. Zang described the actresses as “half dressed,” but you can see a lot more skin at any beach in America. You’d have to be awfully uptight to think Tebow is doing anything wrong in the picture in question.

So why the request to take the picture down? Apparently someone who’s awfully uptight is involved in the careful managing of Tebow’s image. Tebow has become a beloved figure for millions of Americans who think he represents everything that’s right and wholesome and pure, and with millions of dollars in endorsements at stake, Tebow has people working for him who want to make sure that wholesome image is the only image the public sees.

Paradoxically, by so carefully trying to micromanage his image, Tebow (or the people working on his behalf), may end up damaging his image as an authentic, down-to-earth guy. If you’re so worried about your image that you’re having your lawyers go after T-shirt sellers and asking actresses to remove pictures from Twitter, it’s hard not to question whether there’s any substance there at all, or if everything your fans find out about you is a carefully crafted bit of public relations.

If Tebow wants to maintain his image as the genuine article, he’d be wise to stop trying so hard to uphold that image.

Total DELTA BRAVO… We all should know by now that no one is what there public image would like us to believe. This guy has an army of bo-bos telling him how great he is and chosen by god to seead his glory etc. he has no sense of the real world.

Thank god (no pun intended), i was just thinking “there haven’t been nearly enough Tebow stories lately”.

  6. hedleykow says: May 20, 2012 9:45 PM

Tebow patterns himself after Jesus. Take for example the highly contrived and tightly controlled setting in Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper. Tebow, of course, wouldn’t be got dead in a painting without peeled grapes. He has an image to protect.

  7. raiderapologist says: May 20, 2012 9:46 PM

Tebow seems to love cameras more than women.

  8. sterilizecromartie says: May 20, 2012 9:47 PM

I am a big Tebow fan. He is a great role model and a hard worker. Those happen to be two traits that most star athletes are lacking.

But, even I will admit that he needs to lighten up here. There is nothing wrong with taking pictures with good-looking ladies who are dressed to impress… as long as they aren’t strippers.

  9. duanethomas says: May 20, 2012 9:48 PM

Wrong City for him or his people to try and control his image. If he didn’t want the picture to be public, why take it or go backstage after the show? I hope The Jets and Tebow do well this year or its going to be ugly.

Tebow is getting taken for a ride by a persuasive PR firm somewhere

  11. stevenfbrackett says: May 20, 2012 9:50 PM

He really seems to have let all the press and attention go to his head since landing in New York and appears to be believing all the BS ‘let’s motivate Sanchez by playing up Tebow’ hype as if it is actually true.

  12. mullman7675 says: May 20, 2012 9:50 PM

What a joke. The sooner that people realize that Tim Tebow is nothing but a brand name the better.

Keep the pious spin for people with their head stuck in the sand. Everything he does has $$ attached to it.

    Now go pray about it…

  13. emma333 says: May 20, 2012 9:52 PM

When Tim chose to go to NYC over Jacksonville
( which he lied about), the writing was on the wall that he had moved beyond self-promoting to media blitz…He needs to tell the media that he is a back-up quarterback, hopes to one day start-then refuse mega press conferences until he has earned them…Then, he needs to decide if he is Hollywood/Broadway or a role model young man…otherwise it won’t turn out well for him.

  14. whodatnhollywood says: May 20, 2012 9:52 PM

THIS JUST IN: Tim Tebow IS NOT JESUS! This thing is getting sicker by the day! As a Christian and ordained minister, I am so irritated about all of this exploitation of Christianity by Tebow and his pathetic lawyers. Bring him out here to the West Coast, and when I see Tebow walk on the Pacific Ocean, then I’ll believe. Until then, he is a mediocre back-up QB in the NFL. Nothing more, nothing less! It won’t be long before we hear his PR team is trying to trademark “Jesus,” “Christ,” “Salvation” and praying in public more. When does it end!? Tebow is NOT the first Christian to play in the NFL. So, stop acting like it! He and his people need to STOP robbing God of His glory. And those who look up to him like a false idol, PLEASE, quit while you can. Return to God. He can’t be pleased with this self-idolatry. Tebow is but a mortal man. Stop making him to be the second coming.

  15. hannahduccab says: May 20, 2012 9:53 PM

Has anyone considered that this could be a publicity stunt for this actress? Same goes for the My Jesus t-shirts. “Lord” knows that a little Tebow bashing goes a long way. Maybe it did happen but let’s see some proof before assuming this is real.

  16. wtfru2 says: May 20, 2012 9:58 PM

  20. liljere24 says: May 20, 2012 10:11 PM

It wouldn’t be such a big deal if the media didn’t magnify his every move. That goes for multiple athletes. Tebow, Lebron, Kobe, and so on. It is getting disturbing on how deep the media is digging these days. Just saying.

because of people like you he has to. if they did not tell them to take it down you would have plastered it on the front page of pft declaring him a phony for posing with scantily clad women. god help him if he ever does go the beach or you will have him sleeping with every girl in a bikini. he does nothing and you still attack him.

  25. rolloxd says: May 20, 2012 10:24 PM

Your buying into Tebow by posting every other article about him.

Listen, im a Bronco fan. And heck while he was in Denver, you could of called me a Tebow-Maniac.
I believed in Tebow as a QB because of how he turned my team around. I’ve backed Tim as a player and have even met him.

But when i go to PFT.com, i want FOOTBALL news. Not about Tebow’s ‘image’ or who his PR people are suing this week. I think all these articles are a slight attempt for people to not like Tebow.

Quite with all the Tebow articles please, im begging you.

  26. straighcashhomie84 says: May 20, 2012 10:24 PM

    _______________________________
Jason Taylor was home schooled as well. He definitely has no interpersonal skills (sarcasm). Tebow played high school football in a regular setting, just like JT did. Playing a team sport will develop your “interpersonal skills”. Besides, as a guy whose leadership is lauded on the regular even by some detractors, Tebow can’t be a leader without interpersonal skills.

Look I don’t think Tebow is some perfect human being or anything but he had posed with some ladies before (college years). I think he even had his arm around a few of them. And he posed with these ladies too…and later the picture was taken down. Now if Tebow himself is the one censoring pics of himself with women, why would he even pose for them to begin with? Methinks he personally feels it’s fairly harmless but someone he’s hired to help who is crafting his public image doesn’t. Or maybe even his family.

  35. iced107 says: May 20, 2012 11:45 PM

Tebow as a QB is actually pretty christian oriented.

Every time he throws a pass his receiver’s pray the ball will get to them

  36. terumiarai says: May 20, 2012 11:56 PM

I would laugh so hard if Tebow had ugly skeletons in his closet and they decide to come out.

  37. z0inks says: May 20, 2012 11:56 PM

    This stuff cracks me up.

Everybody keeps kvetching about PFT’s rather zealous coverage of Tebow’s daily comings and goings…..but the fact that you’re complaining about it means you’re reading the Tebow articles.

Regardless what you think of Tebow as a player or as a persoon….as long as you continue to read every article that refers to Tebow, then you’re supporting this coverage and contributing to the problem.

If you’re sick of the Tebow coverage, then stop reading it. As long as readers keep lapping up this lowbrow drivel, the sports media outlets will keep on dishing it out.

  38. dryzzt23 says: May 21, 2012 12:01 AM

I am so proud of Tim Tebow!

He will be a shining example of what is good in humanity and will hopefully influence others in NY and beyond to find a moral compass and abide by it.

I am sure that the liberals in NY are all Tebow haters for the following reasons:

    1. He’s conservative
    2. He’s white – so they cannot exploit a minority status for their own purposes
    3. He’s a positive role model for everybody – liberals hate a positive person unless he’s for higher taxes
    4. He is not a diva-type celebrity – liberals fawn over self-indulgent and self-centered celebrities

Well my friend here is something that is real . Your boy Tim bold faced lied when he was traded, The Broncos gave him a choice N.Y or Jacksonville. He said he did not have a choice, Now I dont see why Elway had any reason to say it if it was not true . But your boy here did so did not alienate his Florida fan base because he dissed them. there are 2 truths and they are 1. He went to N.Y to market him self and 2. he is a lair and a fake. 4. He is not a diva-type celebrity – liberals fawn over self-indulgent and self-centered celebrities

    ————————————————————-
I doubt it will take, it never does with your kind, but let’s try a little education.

    1) It’s beyond ignorant to type cast a city of 8 million with a surrounding population of 25 million. Some of the most conservative voices in America live in NY, including most of the Fox News line up.
    2) Manhattan south of 96 Street is primarily white, but even if it wasn’t, you learn pretty early growing up here that there are clowns of every color, gender, and religion.
    3) I haven’t seen Timmy issue his edict on taxes, but NYC survives and thrives on volunteers. From soup kitchens, to tutoring bilingual kids, to even helping out at community theatres, NYC would come to grinding stand still if there wasn’t such a deep and long tradition of volunteer work and charitable giving. NYC gave more to Hurricane relief for New Orleans than the entire state of Louisiana did. Guess you “conservatives” enjoy thumping a bible, but don’t actually take it’s message to heart.
    4) Celebrities back up traffic, cause tourists to block up streets, and are a general pain in the ass. Quite frankly, we could live without them.

I know this hard for a yokel such as yourself to grasp, but there are so many things to do in NYC, that many people are not interested in sports at all. If they are, unless they live on Staten Island, they are most likely Giants fans. No one in NYC REALLY cares about a backup QB. We know a con when we see one, whether it’s three card monte or the “pure virgin” preacher. Been there, done that. Will we exploit rubes like you to make a buck off Tebow? Sure! After all, we have paying far, far more in taxes to the Federal Government than we ever get back for decades, so, since we essentially subsidize the red states and our “conservative” upstate citizens, we might as well make a buck off them when the opportunity presents itself.

While the website doesn’t explicitly say it, the implication is that this shirt is endorsed and liked by Tebow. This awful article isn’t explaining Tebow’s position. Instead they are mocking him. The logo isn’t what is being questioned. Using Tebow’s name over and over again in the description is. Let’s say dolphindan is famous and pro-life. If I make a pro-choice t-shirt, and then repeatedly use dolphindan’s name and circumstances to promote the shirt, don’t you think he would see that as improperly using his name/likeness? It’s not the jets logo that is a problem for Tebow. Go to the website, read the t-shirt description, then come back here and apologize to Tebow.

    @granadafan:

Oh wow. I see what you did there. How clever. You took what I said and reversed it. What an ingenius concept. The only problem is that when you reverse what I said, it becomes completely untrue. 90% of all media outlets (PFT, Yahoo news etc) are bashing Tebow on a daily basis. Constantly throwing their atheistic ideas in people’s faces 24-7. You absolutely can’t stand to see a Christian succeed, yet if Bill Maher were a football player, you’d probably cheer him on with an unprecedented fervor. Total hypocrisy. The irony is that you haters are just as responsible for him being in the spotlight as his fans are. Every time you click a story and leave a comment it gives PFT more incentive to keep writing about him.

  71. cleverbob says: May 22, 2012 7:46 AM

90% of media outlets bash Tebow? How did he possibly manage to get so insanely popular then? Especially with everyone apparently hating Christians, even though over 3/4 of all Americans identify themselves as Christian…
