Stephen Ross: Matt Moore will probably be the Dolphins’ starter

Despite drafting quarterback Ryan Tannehill and signing quarterback David Garrard, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross believes the man who ended last season as his team’s starting quarterback will remain the starter this year.

Ross told Jeff Darlington of NFL.com that Matt Moore is the favorite to win the starting job during training camp.

“I don’t think they’re going to rush [Tannehill] into anything,” Ross said. “He’s going to have to win the starting job. I think Matt Moore will probably be the starter, and I wish him the best.”

Moore started 12 games last year and played well late in the season: After starting the season 0-7, the Dolphins went 6-3 in their final nine games, and Moore had 15 touchdown passes and just five interceptions over those nine games. So he has done something in a Dolphins uniform to give the team confidence.

Of course, if the Dolphins were all that confident, they didn’t have to sign Garrard and draft Tannehill. And Ross has said he believes Tannehill is the quarterback of the future. But Moore will enter training camp as the favorite to keep the job he had at the end of the season.

“Whenever [Tannehill] is ready,” Ross said. “And if Matt Moore develops, so be it. We want a franchise quarterback.”
