Don’t expect Brees to sign the Franchise (Chicken) tender. He did that when he was with San Diego and in the last game of the season he blew his shoulder out and was given a 25% chance of playing again. He wants to be protected for more then one year. The Saints are making a mistake if they think he will sign anything other then a multi-year contract. Maybe we will get to see how good Chase Daniel is.

Uh no Who Dat Nation is not completely on his side. Drew should get paid tops in the game. By all accounts that was offered already and he turned it down. For all Who Dats and others who have such an opinion 1 question… To pay him the 23+ that he wants (currently 16 against the cap), which 2-3 starters are you ready to cut? Yes I know that signing bonuses are prorated but you still have to pay the piper and in this case in the next 3 years or so.

Also, no Drew doesn’t “hold the cards.” kathleenturnersoverdrive, pretty sure that he has to report sometime before week 10 or so to get an accrued season which means if he sits out – year 1 of the tag all over again next year. Let’s assume you are accurate though – if he does sit out and the Saints can tag him for 3 years. A 36 year old QB who hasn’t played in 3 years doesn’t have the same value.

In any event it’ll get done in the $21 mil per year range and everyone will hug and say that it was always going to get done. Remember a couple of days ago, the Saints aren’t returning his calls now there are talks but little progress… ever changing story.

Something to keep in mind is that the last time Brees played under a 1-year franchise tag, he was severely injured in the last game of the season and he lost all negotiating leverage as a free agent. Even the Dolphins, desperate for a QB, didn’t want him. Only one team would give him a chance, so he had to take the deal that was put on the table.

He doesn’t want that to happen again. He wants a long term deal and may never sign the franchise offer.

I don’t agree the Saints can just keep franchising Brees for the simple reason that the salary is a hard number against the cap, while a signing bonus is prorated over the term of the contract saving the team valuable cap space. Sign him Loomis.

Thus, the comparison to what WAS gave up for RG3 is irrelevant.

Drew Brees for the exclusive franchise tag. Exclusive franchise players cannot negotiate with other teams. The player’s team has all the negotiating rights to the exclusive player.

I have to agree with the Saints on this one. You have to take the emotion out and look at this from a dollars and sense perspective. The Saints have no reason to give him a long term deal. If Brees is able to play the next three years, then great! He will make as much or even MORE with the franchise tag than he would get if he signed a long term deal. And if he has a major drop in performance or gets a major injury, they (the Saints) won’t be on the hook for anything. And 3 years from now-it’s likely that the Saints will have even more leverage to offer him “market value” for older QBs, as he will be at an age where most QB’s are passed their prime. Yes, he’s the face of the franchise. But that’s no reason to let him put the team over the barrel.

This is what happens with out-of-control professional sports salaries. One player–whether it be Brees or Kobe Bryant with the Lakers who’s due $27m next season–really straps a team. If they command 25% of the salary cap, what about the other 52 players in the NFL and 14 players on an NBA team? This one player can’t do it all alone. And don’t ask your supporting team members to come in for peanuts–unsalted at that!

I hope the Saints and Brees come an agreement soon. Imagine when Cam Newton becomes a free agent. If he continues to progress at the rate of his rookie season, in his next contract he could ask for $40m per season. Okay. Then the other 52 players will scrap for the remaining $60m or so of the salary cap. The fans will pay the ultimate price.

I have much respect for the Denver Nuggets of the NBA. They took my Lakers to the brink! And they have NO superstars or monster salaries; just a bunch of young, hungry guys. How refreshing!

Brees is the cornerstone of the franchise. They can’t let him be on a 1 yr deal. He deserves Brady/Manning level money and will eventually get it if his play stays at the current level. Just imagine what he would get on the open market. The Saints should just pay the man and not have to worry about QB for 5 years.

Brees is a first class jerk but the guy can play football…..He deserves to be on a better team than that toilet of an organization known as the Saints.

Leave it to the Saints to alienate the best player on the team….. Brees is the primary reason the Saints have had any credibility on the field so I’m sure you wanna go cheap on that guy. Brees should hold out and demand a trade – that’s what that classless organization deserves.

Unreal!!! The leader Brees has been a LEADER on and off the field for NO…nothing short of Amazing!!! QB’s like him come around once in a blue moon. I understand the tag game, but leaders of your team need to get their due….i.e. Fitzgerald getting 120 million from AZ.
It pays off for the team in the long run. AZ tagged Campbell this year…at least we got him to a contract. Brees can still play strong for another 3-4 years.

The explanation joke it really tired. The NFL still hasn’t shown any evidence. The evidence that was leaked did not show what the NFL said it showed. Why don’t you want an explanation for that? You could also just be pissed that your team is terrible and is showing no signs of not being terrible for a long time, which is cool I guess.
