Dolphins sign second-round pick Jonathan Martin

The Dolphins got a seventh-round pick under contract early on Tuesday and they’ve now moved up the ladder to their second-round pick.

Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post reports that the team has signed Martin to a four-year deal worth just under $5 million. Martin protected Andrew Luck’s blindside at left tackle for Stanford, but is expected to play right tackle for the Dolphins.

All signs point to Martin taking over as a starter on the right side, although his ascension to the starting lineup is being delayed by the NFL’s rules forbidding players employed by professional football teams from practicing until their colleges or universities have finished for the semester. That means Martin won’t be at the Dolphins’ Organized Team Activities, where Lydon Murtha is taking snaps with the first team at right tackle. Martin is expected to be at the June minicamp and his delayed start shouldn’t keep him from getting the job.

Martin is the fourth of nine Dolphins draft picks to sign with the team. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill leads the list of players still looking for contracts.
