I'd say the timing is suspicious. This may not be a PR stunt but I'd bet it's more of an evidence gathering maneuver for the pending concussion lawsuits.
At first I thought this was just another moron football player blabbing on about something. Then I thought, he might have a point. It's his choice! We should all stand up for ourselves! So I told my boss I wasn't going to wear pants or shoes at work anymore. It doesn't affect my job! He reminded me that he signs my paycheck so he gets to make the rules. Sometimes life isn't fair, eh uneducated NFL player?

Zabarang wearing protective pads to prevent injury is just common sense something you and many of the players are clearly lacking in in. Based on your posts i would hazard to guess you might have taken a knee or two to the head yourself.

“You play this game because you want to play this game, and the risks you take are the risks you take. If you don’t want to wear hip pads, knee pads or thigh pads, you shouldn’t have to. It should be a choice.”

Jammer says this now because he is earning a large salary. If he has a career ending injury, he will stand in line with the other players suing the league for not protecting them against concussions.

There I said it!

I love how you armchair owners & GM's know more about what the players need or should have then they do. I know you have more experience then the professional football players who have been doing it as in Jarret Johnsons case a 9+ year vet, you know more about if he needs to wear pads on his legs then he does. Thank you for enlightening both myself and these professional football players with your deep insite, superior knowledge and experience.
Keep up the good work showing the world how smart you are.

rmavs: To prove your point, my son is a disabled Iraq Vet. He was injured due to a LACK of equipment, not by his choice. The equipment wasn't available to him when it was readily available in the US (and very low cost) because our former President wanted a cheap war. People like yourself and my son DESERVE the best protection available. And, since our government failed to provide it while the "cheap war President" was in office, you and my son DESERVE every possible recompense from our Nation.

At the same time, the NFL players deserve nothing. Equipment was developed BECAUSE it prevented injury. Compare what they wear now to the past. Knee, thigh, hip, and rib pads along with substantial shoulder pads were NORMAL. The current players don't want to use the available equipment because they want their butts to look good on TV, fine. Let them live with the consequences with no chance of suing later. SCREWM.

BTW: It is time to do away with the hip-hugger pants as well. Trust me guys, seeing your azz crack is not "enhancing" my experience as a viewer.

Do these guys ever realize they are EMPLOYEES? If my boss thinks there's something I could be doing to improve our product, I don't have any choice in the matter. If I want to retain my job, I'll do it -- with a smile.

Most of these guys are embarrassingly undereducated, and aren't of any use to ANYBODY while injured, but especially the men paying their salary.

If the safety committee believes these pads can protect their investment in your fleeting athleticism, then do it, because no one else is going to pay you to do anything.

I understand that I was a fair sandlot and bad HS player. But I did learn a few things. Flying through the air and landing on a hip hurts like hell. Catching a knee to the thigh ditto. Pain is your body's way of saying you have been INJURED. Whether recovery time is a day or a year, it is still an INJURY. And your body only recovers so many times.

How many times have we read a team member missed time because of a "deep thigh bruise" or a "hip pointer" or a "knee contusion". Wanna guess why these pads were invented?

"Well, thigh bruises and knee bruises aren’t ending careers."

Maybe, but chronic, repeated injuries to the same area of a player's body take their toll, and sometimes end careers early.

rmavs says: May 22, 2012 10:11 PM

When will the players realize that they are employees (investments)? In the military, we call the “safety” gear PPE (personal protection equipment), and we, too, are investments to our boss. I’ve never played in the NFL, as I am sure that none of the current NFL players have fought in a TRUE war. Suck it up, shut your mouth, and play on Sundays, and eventually on Saturdays and Thursdays. The League will invest in companies to create the high tech, thin, “like-they’re-not-there-pads”, while guys taking real fire have been needing better gear and protection for over a decade soaked in the horror of TRUE war. You make an enormous amount of money…roll with some punches.
======================================================

rmavs as a former army medic, I can state with certainty that any blunt force trauma such as that incurred with such violent force as inherent in pro football, can, and has resulted in deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which is a blood clot (thrombophlebitis) that in turn frequently develops into phlebitis (inflammation of a vein). Phlebitis can be either deep or superficial. More often than not, it is deep from such trauma.

On the other hand, deep vein thrombosis of the upper and lower extremities can be a more serious problem that can lead to a blood clot traveling to the blood vessels of the lungs and resulting in pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary embolism can injure lung tissue, is serious, and occasionally fatal.

It can present with chest pain and shortness of breath and is a life-threatening condition. More than 90% of pulmonary emboli arise from the legs.

Post-phlebitic syndrome can occur after a deep vein thrombosis. The affected leg can become chronically swollen and painful with skin color changes and ulcer formation around the foot and ankle. This is a very serious condition. Unfortunately, many football players are not attuned to the medical aspects of what they consider "not serious" injuries and can do themselves more harm than good by adopting a cavalier attitude that, in the end, could cost them their lives if not reported in a timely manner.

Fortunately, on the other hand, they have the benefit of astute medical staffs that will treat that condition before, during, or after complications arise with compression stockings which are routinely used, prophylactic early and low doses of heparin or enoxaparin, and, believe it or not, frequent ambulation (walking) to prevent the formation of blood clots.

Bruises to the lower leg should not be taken as lightly as Jarret Johnson would have you believe. Ignorance is a deadly enemy.

“I don’t get hit, so I don’t need to worry about pads. ”

I played college ball as a running back. Once you get past the line of scrimmage you cut the first defensive player you see. Blocking 101.

Jarrett, you are obviously at a WAY higher level I ever played in but you never got cut at the legs?

By no way do I believe added leg pads would be the end all for injuries but they can’t hurt to wear them. Regardless of the reason the owners are throwing this out there I just do not get the push back. It’s no big deal. Thigh and knee pads weigh nothing and are scalable. They do not infringe on mobility.

9/10 people who comment on these articles were on the debate team in HS lmao. Yet they feel competent enough to tell NFL players what to do.

I was on the debate team in HS. I also played football, in HS and college. I'm guessing you also believe that women can't be attractive and smart at the same time, right?

As far as Mr Johnson is concerned, I would encourage him to talk to EJ Henderson about thigh pads.
